Lima '25: Ministry steps up enforcement to ensure business compliance
ALOR STAR: The Kedah Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry is stepping up enforcement operations in the lead-up to the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (Lima '25), which will take place from May 20 to 24.
Its director, Muhammad Nizam Jamaludin, said a total of 190 enforcement officers will be deployed across the state, with a strong presence in Langkawi to monitor business compliance during the international event.
He said the ministry would focus on key areas, including price labelling, profiteering, the availability of controlled items, accuracy of weighing equipment, and halal-related matters.
"Our inspections will cover restaurants, eateries, supermarkets, grocery outlets, public and wet markets, morning and night markets, vehicle rental services, hotels, petrol stations, and areas frequented by tourists," he said in a statement today.
He said officers would maintain a visible presence at these locations, supported by ministry-branded vehicles, to foster a safe and ethical business environment throughout the event period.
Nizam also announced the activation of several targeted operations, including Op Menu 2025, which will ensure clear and accurate pricing at food premises and restaurants.
"This is important to make sure that consumers are not misled and that traders practise ethical and transparent business conduct," he said.
He said Op Kesan 2025 would focus on compliance with the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, particularly regulations introduced in 2018 to determine unreasonable profiteering.
Another operation, Op Indah 2025, will focus on tourist hotspots, aimed at strengthening consumer confidence by promoting clear price displays.
The ministry will also activate a 24-hour complaint response mechanism to ensure that grievances, especially those from foreign visitors, are addressed quickly while they are still in Langkawi.
"We strongly warn traders against arbitrarily raising prices.
"We urge all businesses to comply with the law," he said.

Themed 'Today's Innovation, Tomorrow's Achievements', this year's edition was the largest maritime and aerospace exhibition in Southeast Asia since LIMA's inception in 1991. In Kuala Lumpur, apart from the 46th ASEAN Summit, two high-level meetings were also successfully held last month, namely the ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the first ASEAN-GCC-China Summit. The inaugural trilateral summit between ASEAN, GCC and China, which was also attended by Chinese Premier Li Qiang, not only marked a new chapter of strategic ties but also showcased Malaysia's commitment to enhancing regional economic cooperation. The GCC comprises Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
