Rs 91 crore credited in family accounts of former fund manager: ED
The Enforcement Directorate (ED), probing the alleged cheating of investors by Viresh Joshi, former chief trader and fund manager of Axis Mutual Fund, has said around Rs 91 crore was credited from shell companies to the bank accounts of his family members. The ED claimed to have details of 31 such accounts involved in the transactions. Joshi was produced before the special court on Friday and was sent to judicial custody after the ED did not press for his further custody for interrogation. The ED remand application in the case alleges that Joshi is associated with members of 'organised crime syndicate' engaged in large-scale front-running. It claimed further that money generated through the illegal practice was layered through various accounts, suspecting the proceeds of crime to be Rs 300 crore. '..the generated proceeds of crime… were routed through the accounts and managed and controlled by Viresh Joshi, including the mule accounts linked to 282 individuals/entities. He subsequently layered and placed the proceeds of crime in his family members' bank accounts and finally used it for acquiring several immovable properties,' the ED claimed, adding that these properties were bought in India and abroad. It alleged that no explanation or documentary proof was provided on the suspected transactions. The ED claimed that as part of his job profile, he was privy to confidential information which he shared for personal gain. Joshi's lawyer Manan Sanghai had told court that the Income-Tax department had frozen assets and his custodial interrogation was needed. It was also submitted that these issues were put before the SEBI in its probe.

Tata and Shapoorji Pallonji Group Reignite Exit Talks after Years of Frost
Tata Sons is understood to have initiated early talks with its minority shareholder, the Shapoorji Pallonji (SP) Group, to discuss the way forward in terms of potential exit options and monetisation scenarios for the latter's stake in the company that's currently pledged with lenders. The SP Group owns 18.37% of unlisted Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group . Sources said Tata Sons chairman N Chandrasekaran recently met SP Group chairman Shapoor Mistry at an undisclosed location, the first formal engagement between the two sides since relations soured following the ouster of the latter's brother Cyrus Mistry as Tata Sons chairman in 2016. 'It was done to get a sense of expectation from the SP side,' said one of the persons cited. 'It will be a long journey towards any final settlement talks between the two sides,' said the person. Shapoor, elder of the two Mistry brothers, has always maintained a low profile. Cyrus Mistry died in a car accident in 2022. Live Events The two sides agreeing to talk marks a significant shift in their relationship since 2016. Tata Sons and Shapoor Mistry did not respond to queries. Last week, the Tata Trusts passed a resolution affirming that Tata Sons should remain an unlisted private company and initiate discussions with the SP Group to provide it an exit, marking a key strategic shift. 'It was agreed at the meeting to request the chairman of Tata Sons to explore all possible avenues for ensuring that there was no change in the status of Tata Sons as it currently stood. This included a dialogue with the minority shareholders, i.e., the SP Group for providing an exit to them from Tata Sons,' the resolution said. Chandrasekaran is leading parleys and will share updates with the Trusts, the sources said. Tata Sons is expected to consider the rights and concerns of the SP Group as a minority shareholder, people familiar with the development said. Tata Trusts has stated earlier that the pledged Tata Sons shares are non-transferable. 'It is in tune with the principles of corporate governance that a healthy relationship is maintained with minority shareholders of a company. Moreover, if channels of communications are open, it would ultimately help in smooth decision making in the company,' said Ashish K Singh, managing partner of law firm Capstone Legal. The SP Group formally urged the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in April to back a public listing of Tata Sons, arguing that such a move would benefit all stakeholders. Struggling to service substantial debt, the SP Group had also expressed its concerns to Tata Sons over not being informed about the company's decision to surrender its registration as an Upper Layer Core Investment Company (UL CIC) to the RBI. In January, the RBI stated in its annual report that it was considering an application by Tata Sons to deregister itself from being classified as a core investment company (CIC) under upper-layer non-banking finance company (NBFC-UL) norms. Under RBI rules, as an NBFC-UL, Tata Sons would have to get listed by September. Tata Sons had become a zero-debt company to make itself eligible for exclusion from the list. The SP Group has used its entire holding in Tata Sons as collateral to raise funding from private credit funds. The value of its stake in Tata Sons, based just on its holdings in listed Tata Group companies, is more than ₹3 lakh crore ($35 billion).

CAG warns Goa of rising debt, calls for urgent management strategy
Porvorim: With Goa's debt burden continuing to rise, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reiterated its warning that the state needs a debt sustainability framework to achieve long-term sustainability in fiscal management. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now At the close of 2023-24, Goa's total outstanding debt stood at Rs 32,867 crore. However, when off-budget fiscal liabilities of Rs 706 crore were factored in, Goa's debt rose to Rs 33,573 crore, which is equivalent to 29.9% of the state's economic output. 'Given the increasing trend of committed expenditure over the last five years, state govt may work out a well thought out debt management strategy,' said the CAG in its report titled, 'State Finances Audit Report' for the year ended March 31, 2024. The CAG pointed out that govt breached the targeted debt-to-GSDP ratio for five consecutive years and faces steep repayment obligations in the coming decade. According to the report, 85% of Goa's public debt, that is Rs 23,470 crore, will come up for repayment within the next 10 years. Between 2024 and 2029 alone, govt must repay principal and interest amounting to Rs 16,580 crore. This includes Rs 5,149 crore in principal and Rs 4,057 crore in interest by 2026-27, followed by Rs 5,321 crore in principal and Rs 2,053 crore in interest in 2027-29. From 2029-30 onwards, repayments of Rs 16,912 crore in principal and Rs 1,922 crore in interest will need to be made. The state has also seen interest payments climb from Rs 1,465 crore in 2019-20 to Rs 1,889 crore in 2023-24, though the interest payment-to-revenue receipts ratio declined marginally to 10% in 2023-24 from 11% the previous year. While govt claimed to end 2023-24 with a revenue surplus of Rs 1,423 crore against the revised estimate of Rs 906 crore, the CAG pointed out that Rs 167 crore in revenue expenditure was either unpaid, short-paid, or not recorded in the accounts. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Adjusting for this, the surplus stands reduced to Rs 1,256 crore, the audit report said. The higher-than-expected surplus, the report said, was mainly because govt managed to spend only Rs 16,849 crore against the Rs 19,447 crore it was supposed to spend on social welfare schemes and economic services.
