For a glimpse of the "new space" race, look to the UAE

The National23-05-2025
When it comes to space exploration, there is little doubt that things have changed since the intense competition of the Space Race between the US and the Soviet Union last century. From a time when a single rocket launch could capture the attention of millions, and when superpowers developed their own astronauts, spacecraft and technology in carefully guarded isolation, the world is seeing the emergence of a different model: the so-called New Space Economy (NSE). Characterised by the involvement of entrepreneurs, private tech companies and venture capital – as well as an increasing number of countries, big and small – the NSE is a departure from the time when government-backed space agencies and aerospace contractors dominated. Some of this change is economic, some of it is technical but it is a development that looks set to stay. For a glimpse of how this new paradigm is unfolding, a close look at this week's Make it in the Emirates event in Abu Dhabi reveals how a relative newcomer to the space sector is both embracing and shaping this change. On Wednesday it was announced that an Earth observation satellite manufacturing centre is to be established in the UAE capital. In a collaboration between Abu Dhabi Investment Office and the emirate's Space 42 tech company, the centre will help create a national space workforce with hands-on industrial expertise. The day before, Space42 revealed that is will begin to manufacture prototypes of platforms that will operate thousands of metres above the Earth's surface this year. And on Friday, the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre and US-based Firefly Aerospace signed a strategic agreement to provide payload delivery services for the Rashid 2 Rover, part of the Emirates Lunar Mission scheduled for next year. These are just the latest examples of how UAE businesses and state-backed investors are working in partnership to explore the opportunities presented by the space sector in a 21st-century way. Another is the country's focus on developing worker expertise in components, maintenance and the AI-powered technology needed to operate successful space missions. For example, an academy run by the UAE Space Agency offers graduates in Stem subjects – science, technology, engineering and maths – the chance to sharpen their skills for a career in the space sector. Thriving in the NSE is also about enhancing national priorities – building scientific and technical expertise as part of a profitable sector – while collaborating with other countries and private businesses. Emirati astronauts have trained in Russian and American facilities and in March, Etihad-SAT – the UAE's first Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite – was successfully launched onboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Amid the long list of positives associated with this approach, including increased economic diversification and the creation of future-proof technologies, there remain issues to be faced. Critiques of the NSE model have raised concerns about the need to update outdated international space treaties and the high entry bar for developing nations. Here too however, the UAE is shaping the change with the Emirates operating as a commercial hub with strong economic links to the global south. Owing to its relative ubiquity, the days when a space flight would have people glued to their TV screens are probably gone, while they become more common place and available online. But as more countries look at the UAE's path for inspiration to take part in the 'new space' race, that sense of achievement and excitement will only grow.

UAE: Flydubai to receive 12 aircraft this year, still 20 behind its original projections

Flydubai will receive 12 new aircraft this year but remains 20 planes short of its original delivery projections, its chief executive said Thursday. The Dubai carrier has taken delivery of seven new aircraft in 2025, with a further five Boeing 737 MAX 8s scheduled to join its fleet before the end of the year. The seven new aircraft have taken the local carrier's fleet to 93 aircraft, supporting the carrier's growing network of more than 135 destinations in 57 countries. 'These deliveries are part of a backlog extensively delayed in recent years, and despite receiving 12 aircraft this year, we remain 20 aircraft behind our original projections,' said Ghaith Al Ghaith, CEO at flydubai. Saj Ahmad, chief analyst at StrategicAero Research, said as one of the world's biggest 737 MAX customers and the biggest 737 operator in the GCC, it's no surprise that flydubai's success has been borne out of the unique low cost, low fuel burn and efficiency of the 737 MAX to augment its regional and international growth, particularly since expanding flights after the Covid-19 pandemic. 'What makes the 737 MAX special to flydubai is not just the fact that the airline operates a hybrid cabin for premium passengers, but the additional range and payload allow flydubai to expand into markets that simply didn't previously exist out of the UAE. With over 135 touch points, it's clear to see flydubai has a lot more room for growth, and this is why the development of Dubai World Central / Al Maktoum International airport is key to their future success,' added Ahmad. Airlines in the UAE and around the world are facing delays in deliveries, which are impacting their expansion and growth plans. The carrier said in July last year that its expansion plans had been significantly impacted by Boeing's latest update regarding ongoing delays in its aircraft delivery schedule. Flydubai has added 11 new destinations this year, including seasonal summer destinations Antalya and Al Alamein as well as Damascus and Peshawar. The carrier is set to add four new destinations in Europe, including Chisinau and Iasi from September and Vilnius and Riga from December. 'Looking ahead, these aircraft will enable us to unlock new destinations, optimise our operations and play an even greater role in supporting Dubai's growth as an international aviation hub,' added Al Ghaith. Flydubai added that financing for the first seven aircraft received this year has been secured under Islamic financing from Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, conventional debt financing from The National Bank of Ras Al Khaimah, as well as sale and leaseback transactions with JP Lease Products & Services (JLPS) and JLPS Ireland Limited.

Emiratis can renew UAE passports up to a year before they expire

Emiratis will be able to renew their passports up to a year before they expire from Monday. The extended period – up from the previous six months – was announced by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). Most countries require visitors to have at least six months left on their passports to be allowed to travel. There are some exceptions, with New Zealand, Iceland, Sweden and Albania requiring three months. 'The move aims to improve citizens' quality of life by enabling them to plan overseas travel in advance, complete necessary procedures seamlessly and expand the use of digital official documents,' said ICP director Ali Al Shamsi. 'It is also part of the authority's strategy to provide proactive and innovative government services.' The UAE passport continues to rank among the world's most powerful and trusted travel documents, he added. It moved into the top 10 of the Henley Passport Index for the first time in 2024. The country was ranked ninth with visa-free access to 185 countries, an increase of 152 countries since the index began in 2006. 'The new order will further strengthen the UAE passport's global standing and set a benchmark for passport issuance and renewal systems worldwide,' he said. The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai renewed 7,425 UAE passports during the first half of 2025. The centre has issued 139,000 passports for Emiratis since its inauguration in 2008.
