Rahul Gandhi seeks contempt proceedings against Satyaki Savarkar in defamation case

India Today29-07-2025
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has filed an application before a Pune court seeking contempt of court proceedings against Satyaki Savarkar, grand-nephew of Hindutva leader Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, alleging repeated violations of judicial directives in the ongoing defamation case. The application, filed by Gandhi through advocate Milind Pawar, accuses the complainant of wilfully disregarding court orders by failing to submit the original CD and an authenticated transcript of Gandhi's speech, which form the basis of the defamation complaint lodged by Satyaki Savarkar.advertisementSatyaki Savarkar had earlier filed a criminal defamation case against Gandhi, objecting to alleged derogatory remarks made against V D Savarkar during a public address. At the time of filing, Savarkar submitted a CD and a transcript of the speech as supporting material.
However, according to Gandhi's legal team, despite multiple reminders and a clear directive from the court, these materials have not been provided in a usable format. Instead of the original CD, a pen drive was submitted, which the defence claims is corrupted and unreadable on any device.'This has caused serious prejudice to the accused's right to effectively prepare and conduct his defence,' the application states, arguing that the complainant's conduct obstructs the judicial process and amounts to contempt of court. The plea urges the court to take 'serious note' of the continued non-compliance before the trial formally begins, and to initiate contempt proceedings to uphold the integrity of the judicial process. In his application, Gandhi also asserts that the defamation case appears to be part of a larger, politically motivated campaign to target him. He alleges that certain individuals affiliated with ideologies opposed to constitutional values—particularly those aligned with the RSS and Hindutva—are misusing the judicial process to file 'false and frivolous' cases against him across the country.'It is not the pursuit of justice but a deliberate attempt to harass and distract the accused from his public duties,' the application reads. The plea also notes that while several leaders from ruling parties have made allegedly derogatory remarks about past Congress Prime Ministers and leaders, the Congress has never retaliated by filing similar complaints. It claims Rahul Gandhi has consistently demonstrated respect for the judiciary and the Constitution, and that this respect is being exploited by ideological opponents. The application reiterates a claim previously made by Gandhi that Satyaki Savarkar is the grandson of Gopal Godse, one of the men convicted alongside Nathuram Godse for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. The Pune court has taken the application on record. The next hearing in the matter is scheduled for August 13.- EndsTune InMust Watch

Haryana govt notifies new Mansa Devi Shrine Board

1 2 Chandigarh: The Haryana govt's notification of the reconstituted Shri Mata Mansa Devi Shrine Board (SMDSB), comprising regular and associate members, has surprised many, including the heavyweights of Panchkula BJP. Notably, the list of board members notified by the ULB department includes former Speaker Gian Chand Gupta at the top, followed by Kalka MLA Shakti Rani Sharma, Panchkula mayor Kulbhushan Goyal; Banto Kataria, a BJP leader and widow of former MP Ratan Lal Kataria; Kalka civic body president Krishan Lamba, former Panchkula BJP leader R P Malhotra, former city BJP leader Devender Dhawan, Hari Pal Gupta, and Ambala businessman Rishabh Gupta. The associate members include Ishwar Jindal, a staunch RSS worker, and Dr Puneet Bedi, an educationist-turned-politician and head of the intellectual cell of the Panchkula BJP district unit. Though the nomination to the board is a prerogative of the chief minister's office, this time, the induction of RSS men, namely Rishabh Gupta and Ishwar Jindal, along with the induction of Panchkula mayor Kulbhushan Goyal and Krishan Lamba, has surprised and shocked certain BJP leaders, especially those who are eyeing the party's candidature for the Panchkula and Kalka assembly constituencies. In the past, there was a precedent of inducting active visitors and contributors to the shrine. Those associated with the shrine for decades have put a question mark on the criteria. "Barring one or two members, we have hardly seen majority of nominated members visiting Mansa Devi shrine or other shrines. They only come during a CM's visit, or Navratras. This is really beyond our understanding, as the recommendation of heavyweights too has been sidelined," one such disheartened aspirant said. However, businessman Rishabh Gupta said, "This is a sewa given to me and our family, who have been visiting the shrine for many decades. This decision has come from the CMO after detailed deliberation, and we take it as blessings of the deity." Sources informed that district and state-level BJP leaders were lobbying for their respective candidates. "The list was prepared by the CMO, in consultation with CM Nayab Saini and RSS ideologues of the district as well as the state. Former Speaker Gupta, Kalka MLA Shakti Rani Sharma, Banto Kataria, Kulbhushan Goyal, and Krishan Lamba are learned to have been inducted due to their stature in public," sources added. Ishwar Jindal, Dr Puneet Bedi, Rishabh Gupta, R P Malhotra, and Haripal Gupta are said to be backed by RSS. MSID:: 123143273 413 |

Janmashtami to be celebrated at every police station: Yogi

1 2 Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday said Janmashtami would be celebrated at every police station and police training institute in the state on Aug 16. "The occasion would provide trainees with an opportunity to showcase their cultural and artistic talents, making the festival a symbol of cultural unity," Yogi made this announcement during his visit to Moradabad where he inaugurated and laid foundation stones for 87 development projects worth Rs 1,172 crore. Accusing the Samajwadi Party of having tried to restrict Janmashtami celebrations when it was in power, Yogi said his govt would ensure grand celebrations across the state. Referring to the result of the Kundarki bypoll held in Nov 2024, where BJP trumped the SP candidate in a Muslim majority area, the CM called it Moradabad's rejection of SP's and Congress' divisive politics. "The public chose satisfaction over appeasement, leading to the forfeiture of SP-Congress deposits," he said. Highlighting the global recognition which Moradabad's handicraft are getting, the CM said "It was the commitment of BJP's double-engine government to elevate the city and its products on the world stage. Once known for chaos and hooliganism, Moradabad is now renowned for its excellent handicrafts and brass items under the ODOP scheme, exporting products worth Rs 11,000 to Rs 15,000 crore." He added that Moradabad's artists, including one who received a Padma award, are working tirelessly to realise Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a self-reliant India.
