"He Did Cross The Line": Ex India Star's Big Verdict On Shubman Gill's Captaincy
"He's been aggressive at times; sometimes he did cross the line. I think he'll change that about himself to an extent. I hope he doesn't change it too much. But most importantly, the way he handled the English media [he did it very well]. Walking into this series, people were asking - Shubman Gill, away from India, his record can be better. And he said, 'I want to be the best batter across both teams'. It's one thing to have confidence, but you've got to back that up with skill. He came prepared. There was a vulnerability in his batting [against] the ball coming back in. He found a way to work on his technique and counter it," said Karthik.
Karthik suggested that Gill should get a lot of credit for the way he batted in the second Test, saying that his 430-run aggregate in the contest at Edgbaston was the most defining moment of the series.
"What was the defining part of what he achieved was the hunger and determination. That 269 and the hundred he got at Edgbaston, the amount of time he batted was astounding," he added.
Gill's next assignment as captain will see India take on West Indies for two Tests, starting October 2. Before that, he will be leading North Zone in the upcoming Duleep Trophy.

Late penalty salvages a point for Ipswich in Birmingham opener
Ipswich needed a stoppage-time penalty to rescue a point as they began their quest for an immediate return to the Premier League with a 1-1 draw away to Birmingham on Friday. HT Image Birmingham, back in English football's second-tier after being crowned champions of League One last season, took the lead in the opening match of the 2025/26 Championship campaign in the 53rd minute. Jay Stansfield broke the deadlock when he followed up after Japan's Kyogo Furuhashi, previously a fans favourite at Scottish champions Celtic, hit the post. But George Hirst's controversial penalty deep into stoppage time denied Birmingham, whose minority owner is seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, victory. "I was really pleased with how we played," Birmingham manager Chris Davies told Sky Sports. "We're very disappointed with the penalty and to concede so late is always a sore one. It's really, really harsh." Birmingham dominated territory and possession as they made it 26 league games unbeaten at home. But at just 1-0 ahead there was always the risk of an equaliser and Ipswich, relegated from the Premier League, managed one with their lone shot on target of the match. With five minutes of the eight added on having being played, an Ipswich corner to the far post was headed onto the arm of the unfortunate Lyndon Dykes, who did not appear to be handling the ball deliberately But Dykes' arm was raised and referee Andrew Kitchen awarded a penalty, with Ipswich's Hirst scoring from the spot. The goal sparked a brief fracas between the teams, with objects being thrown onto the St Andrew's pitch by frustrated Birmingham fans. "(Scoring the penalty) is what I'm paid to do," said Hirst. "It is my bread and butter. "The centre-half said it was a rubbish penalty in different terms but it went in the back of the net. That is what matters at the end of the day." jdg/nr

Hes That X-Factor: Ex-Australia Skipper Questions Indias Decision To Bench Kuldeep Yadav On Entire England Tour
Former Australia captain Michael Clarke has questioned India's decision to bench Kuldeep Yadav for the entire Test series against England. Clarke feels that India missed a trick by not playing with Kuldeep Yadav in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England. The 30-year-old Kuldeep was part of the India's squad in the recently concluded England tour but he didn't feature in any of the five matches as Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill-led management preferred Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja in the XI. While Clarke feels Kuldeep could have helped India take 20 wickets, he also praised the spin duo of India Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar for their fantastic performance in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. "The talk around Kuldeep Yadav, I don't think, changes. He didn't play a part in the series. I think he could have helped India take 20 wickets in this series. But you can't take anything from these two (Sundar and Jadeja). With the bat, they've been exceptional, with the ball, they've been exceptional. So, I don't think anybody can criticise those two players, these two spinners. The part of the impact they had in this series deserved their spot, grabbed it with both hands," Clarke said on his YouTube channel Beyond23 Cricket Podcast. Since his Test debut in 2017, he has played just 13 Tests, taking 56 scalps at an average of 22.16 and four five-wicket hauls. Kuldeep, who made his Test debut against Australia at Dharamsala in 2017, has an impressive bowling record in red ball format. He has picked 56 wickets in 13 Tests with an average of 22.16 so far. However, he has struggled to find a place in the Indian Playing XI on a regular basis. He has played only one Test match in England back in 2018 and went wicketless; however, he has a fine record against England in Test, taking 21 wickets in six matches at an average of 22.28, with best figures of 5/72. Clarke believes Kuldeep is the X-factor for India, and he could've helped them throughout this series to take 20 wickets in a match. He also felt Jadeja and Sundar's batting is underrated. "But I do think Kuldeep will continue to be a talking point because I think he's that X-factor for all of India. He could've helped them throughout this series to take 20 wickets. And then the two spinners, their batting is underrated. Has always been underrated for someone like Jadeja. He scores so many important runs for India. And, Washington Sundar another fifty as well," Clarke added. After being benched throughout the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Kuldeep Yadav will return to action in the Duleep Trophy, where he will lead Central Zone's spin attack later this month.
