‘1 crore Rohingyas, Bangladeshi Muslims': Suvendu Adhikari calls for Bihar-like SIR in Bengal
Suvendu, while addressing reporters in Howrah, said the state's electoral rolls are riddled with deceased voters, duplicate entries and fake voters.
Speaking to news agency ANI, Suvendu called for immediate action by the Election Commission of India (ECI) and urged them to remove such illegal voters from the list.
"There are nearly one crore Rohingya immigrants, Bangladeshi Muslim voters, deceased voters, duplicate entries, and fake voters in West Bengal. The Election Commission of India should remove these names to ensure the credibility of the voter list," Adhikari said
Suvendu's remark come at a time when the BJP-led NDA government and the opposition INDIA bloc are locking horns over the Bihar SIR exercise.
The opposition claims that through this exercise, the NDA is trying to manipulate the voters' list ahead of the high-stakes Bihar assembly election.
BJP's 'shielding infiltrators' charge at Mamata Banerjee
Earlier, West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya accused the TMC of "orchestrating a conspiracy" to include Bangladeshis in the state's electoral rolls, asserting that the ruling party was "hearing its death knell" as it shields infiltrators to preserve its vote bank.
Bhattacharya alleged that the Mamata Banerjee-led government was misusing state machinery to protect illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and the Rohingya community in order to manipulate electoral outcomes.
"From Barasat to Madhyamgram, fake voter cards have been issued to Bangladeshi nationals with the active involvement of local TMC leaders. BLOs (Booth Level Officers) are being threatened to ensure bogus names stay on the rolls," he said.
The Election Commission, however, has not yet officially responded to either of the claims.
Rahul Gandhi's 'vote chori' claim against ECI
Meanwhile, Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, made some explosive claims, saying he has "an atom bomb of evidence" that proves the poll body's alleged involvement in "vote theft" to benefit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
"Votes are being stolen. We have open-and-shut proof that the Election Commission is involved in this vote theft. And I'm not saying this lightly, I'm speaking with 100% proof. And when we release it (proof), the entire country will come to know that the Election Commission is enabling vote theft. And who are they doing it for? They're doing it for the BJP," he said.
To this, the Election Commission of India refuted the claims and urged voters not to pay heed to such allegations.

BJP leader Surendran slams LDF, UDF on voter list allegations
Thrissur: Senior BJP leader and former Kerala state president K. Surendran on Wednesday ridiculed both the CPI(M)-led LDF and Congress-led UDF over their allegations of large-scale voter list manipulation in Thrissur, where Union Minister Suresh Gopi is the MP. Speaking to reporters in Thrissur, Surendran questioned how the state's two dominant political fronts remained silent if, as alleged, a party without even a single MLA in Kerala managed to add 60,000 "illegal" votes. "If you couldn't detect such a thing, you should hang yourselves," said Surendran. Surendran asserted that Suresh Gopi would not only win again in 2029 but also in 2034, with an even larger mandate, dismissing the current controversy as an attempt to dent the minister's popularity. "These allegations will only increase public support for him," he claimed. Explaining the BJP's position, Surendran pointed out that the Election Commission now allows three revisions of the voter list annually, compared to one earlier, and that any citizen residing in a constituency for over six months is eligible to register. "Suresh Gopi and his family had rented a house in Thrissur as part of his political work and duly transferred their votes there," added Surendran. He acknowledged that a small number of votes had been shifted from other districts but insisted the figures were negligible. "MLAs and MPs from both the Congress and CPI(M) have votes registered in multiple places. Why is this a problem only when it's Suresh Gopi?" he asked. The BJP leader also criticised the opposition for raising objections based on the claims of "a single woman" rather than following proper legal channels. He cited his own 2016 Assembly election loss by 89 votes, where he later proved 80 fake votes in court without creating a media uproar. "Whether the opposition likes it or not, Suresh Gopi will be here for the long run," Surendran declared, likening the BJP to a "majestic elephant" that would remain unshaken by "small jackals making noise".

Jagan Mohan Reddy for 'making baseless allegations against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi' in reference to his 'vote-chori campaign'. 'Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy should understand that the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, is not fighting for the Congress party alone. We are fighting to protect India's democracy,' he said in a video clip posted on X. 'Rahul ji has not surrendered to Amit Shah, nor is he afraid of Narendra Modi, like Mr. Jagan. More than five months on, Mangaluru City Corporation awaits ward-wise reservations list to hold polls
More than five months since the five-year term of the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) council ended, the civic body is waiting for the government to publish the draft list of ward-wise reservations to hold election. The term of the elected council, which was led by the BJP, expired on February 27, 2025. Sources within the corporation stated that the government has not taken any action to publish the draft reservations, thus prolonging the holding of the election. The government will have to invite objections to the draft before publishing the final notification announcing the reservations. The Election Commission will have to announce the election date later. Along with Mangaluru, city corporation councils of Mysuru, Shivamogga, Tumakuru, Davangere, and Bengaluru too are waiting for elections to their councils for long. A study titled 'A Critical Review of Decentralised Participatory Governance in Cities of Karnataka', by Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship and Democracy, noted in 2024 that there are substantial delays in holding elections to municipal corporations. Elections to municipal corporations are delayed by an average of 22 months, and the formation of municipal councils and the election of mayors or presidents of municipalities are delayed by an additional two-and-a-half years, it said. The report called for the timely conduct of elections to city councils every five years and for mayoral elections to be held within 15 days of the municipal election results being declared. It also recommended empowering the State Election Commission to conduct the delimitation of wards and reservation fixation to avoid delays. Previous MCC council elections In the last election held for the MCC council on November 12, 2019, the BJP snatched the council from the Congress by winning 44 of 60 wards. The Congress managed to bag 14 seats while the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) bagged two seats. In the 2013 election, the Congress managed to get the council from the BJP by winning 35 seats. The BJP won 20 seats and the Janata Dal (Secular) got two seats. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) shared a seat each. An independent was also elected. The BJP lost power in the council which it had captured for the first time in the 2007 elections. Though the elections were held in 2013, the council came into being in March 2014 after one year from the date of the elections due to reservation issues pertaining to the offices of the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor. In 2007, the BJP sat in the treasury benches of the corporation for the first time by ending the two-decade control of the Congress in the civic body. The BJP won 34 seats. The Congress had been able to win 20 seats then. The Janata Dal (Secular) and Communist Party of India (Marxists) could get one seat each, and four seats had been bagged by independents. Later, Santhosh, a Congress rebel who won from Panambur Bengre ward (no. 11) as an independent, joined the BJP taking its tally to 35.
