‘Bad Sisters' Execs Ready New European Series ‘Dead End' For An English-Language Remake

Yahoo21-05-2025
EXCLUSIVE: A trio of key creative forces on Apple TV+'s Bad Sisters say their Flemish comedy-drama Dead End is primed for an English-language remake.
Malin-Sarah Gozin, who created the Belgian series on which Bad Sisters was made and co-created the Apple show, is attending Canneseries with fellow producers Brett Baer and Dave Finkel with quirky drama Dead End, which is playing in competition. Gozin has directed Dead End with Hans Vercauter.

The show is a six-part drama out of Belgium starring Peter Van den Begin and Elise Schaap about a man with a peculiar eating disorder that makes him a potentially tasty aid to police – he can see the final moments of whatever he puts in his mouth.
Federation Studios recently picked up international sales rights to the finished tape, but Gozin, Baer and Finkel are eyeing an English-language remake, akin to Bad Sisters.
'Whether it's an American version or an English-language version, that has been the game plan all along,' said Baer, who along with production and writing partner Finkel is known for work on shows such as New Girl and United States of Tara.
'Bad Sisters was an eight-year process for us – and even longer for Malin – to get it into production, so how do we shorten that process, especially with the industry as it is right now? Recognising that Dead End is unique and extraordinary, Malin does an incredible job with the Flemish version, then we have this piece of IP to be able to say 'Trust us, it works.' This is hopefully the shortcut for us to take it to other audiences.'
Gozin, who is among Europe's top creative screenwriters, was itching to team with Baer and Finkel after their experience on Bad Sisters, she revealed.
'On Bad Sisters, we vibed so well. I could immediately feel like we share the fascination for the genre blend and how to use dark comedy as a grammar to talk about something real. At the same time, not being afraid of digging deeper.'
She noted that it is one thing to sell a foreign-language scripted title to an American or other English-language buyer, but that the chemistry with the local producer had to click for success.
'You can sell the format, but then you have to look for the creatives who really understand the heart of the show,' she said. 'Often you don't have a say in it, so it's Russian roulette. When I met these guys, it was like 'finally.' They fell in love for the right reasons.'
Finkel added: 'What we fell in love with originally many years ago when we saw Clan – and then when we first met Malin and when we worked on Bad Sisters – was the synergy of what she has been trying to do by creating these universes and giving the audience something that is gripping, bizarre, unique, dramatic, gruesome and surprising. When she pitches an idea like that, you immediately can see seasons of expanse going deeper and deeper into the characters.'
The series – which is for Play Media and Streamz in Belgium and comes from Lompvis and Caviar – stars Tabula Rasa's Peter van den Begin as the unfortunate Ed, who wants to put his unusual gift to good use but struggles with the life it has given him. The producers and stars were in Cannes over the weekend with the show, which is competing against the likes of Belgian-German co-pro How to Kill Your Sister, Korean drama S Line and Norway's Nepobaby among others.
'In general, I like these unique universes where you start from a crazy concept and then try to dig into it and look for something relatable,' said Gozin. 'The crazy idea came from when I had food poisoning from a rotten strawberry, and I started thinking about the concept.'
'Bad Sisters' Season 3 Update
Gozin noted that a third season of Apple TV+ comedy-drama Bad Sisters remains on the boil.
She told Deadline that 'nothing has been confirmed yet' in regards to a third run of the Apple show, which stars Sharon Horgan, Eve Hewson and Anne-Marie Duff among others.
Baer added: 'Sharon, who has more direct involvement with Apple UK, has been a little coy about it in interviews recently. She has a new show that she's just started working on, so I'm not sure.'Best of Deadline

‘Mayor of Kingstown' Season 4 Premiere Date and Plot Details Revealed

Mayor of Kingstown is coming back for Season 4 … and sooner than you might think! The drama, which is part of the Taylor Sheridan universe on Paramount+, recently shot on location in Canada, and details about what's ahead for the gritty crime series are starting to come to light. Here's a look at everything we know about Mayor of Kingstown Season 4 so far. When will Mayor of Kingstown Season 4 premiere? Paramount+ has revealed that the series will return for its fourth season on October 26. Who will star in Mayor of Kingstown Season 4? In addition to Jeremy Renner's Kyle McLusky, the main characters who survived the events of the Season 3 finale are: Ian (Hugh Dillon), Kyle (Taylor Handley), Bunny (Tobi Bamtefa), Robert (Hamish Allan-Headley), and Evelyn (Necar Zadegan). Per Deadline, Clayton Cardenas will join the show in Season 4 as Deputy Warden Torres, the 'right-hand man' of the incoming deputy who'll take over leadership at Anchor Bay after Kareem's death. Other additions for Season 4 include Edie Falco, Lennie James, and Laura Benanti. Falco plays Anchor Bay's new prison warden, Nina Hobbs. James plays gangster Frank Moses, who's respected not just in the city of Detroit and the state of Michigan, but also beyond. And Benanti is playing a new correctional officer, Cindy Stephens. What will happen in Mayor of Kingstown Season 4? Creator Hugh Dillon confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that the events of the Season 3 finale do mean that the Russian mafia storyline is coming to an end for the series, teasing that their eradication from Kingstown 'leaves a vacuum [that] will be filled.' The logline for the new season tells us, 'Mike's control over Kingstown is threatened as new players compete to fill the power vacuum left in the Russians' wake, compelling him to confront the resulting gang war and stop them from swallowing the town. Meanwhile, with those he loves in more danger than ever before, Mike must contend with a headstrong new Warden to protect his own while grappling with demons from his past.' How did Mayor of Kingstown Season 3 end? The Season 3 finale ended with a lot of major character losses. First, Kareem (Michael Beach) walked right into an ambush by the Aryans when trying to break up a scuffle in the yard with no backup — a fate he seemed to choose. Then, Evelyn told Mike that she is coming after Ian for using Charlie as a weapon against a whistleblower. She sees him as a sure means of getting to Robert, who she doesn't believe to be fit for the force (and she's right about that). Then, she decided to press charges against Kyle after he shot Robert to stop him from gunning down an innocent man who was hiding during the bridge melee. Despite how close Mike is to her, she doesn't buy into his brand of look-the-other-way-for-our-guys justice. Meanwhile, the bridge conflict saw the Crips ambush and eliminate the remaining Russians, with the help of the police department no less, so now Bunny will have rule of the roost as long as he sticks to Kingstown as his sole territory. But will he? Konstantin and Milo (Aidan Gillen) won't be a factor anymore. Milo forced Iris (Emma Laird) to shoot Konstantin if she wanted a new life, and Mike then took out Milo for his many transgressions, including taunting Mike about his mother's death. Sadly, Iris, too, is dead; although she made it onto the bus, she took too many pain pills and overdosed before arrival. How will so many calamities affect Mike's 'mayor'al status? After all, his brother's in jail for attempted murder, his best friend's under suspicion of murder, his romantic partner is the one prosecuting them both, his platonic girlfriend who he's fought so hard to protect is now dead, the warden is gone, the Aryans are still on a revenge tour, and Bunny's in charge of everything. Season 4 is going to be wild. Are there photos of Mayor Kingstown Season 4? Yes! A batch of 10 first-look photos were revealed in August, and you can check them all out right here. VUONG: Not one more tax dollar to TIFF until they find their moral compass

TIFF can't seem to get its story straight. Usually, this is a sign that someone is not telling the truth. On Aug. 12, Hollywood news site Deadline broke the news that TIFF uninvited Canadian filmmaker Barry Avrich from screening his documentary, The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue. This heroic story, which was first covered by 60 Minutes, is one that should inspire anyone who cares about family, duty, and the triumph of good over evil. It follows retired soldier and Israeli veteran Noam Tibon who set out to rescue his two granddaughters on Oct. 7, 2023 and saved, along the way, survivors of the Nova music festival massacre and helped wounded soldiers. In response to Deadline, a TIFF spokesperson claimed 'conditions that were requested when the film was initially invited, were not met, including legal clearance of all footage.' Sorry, whose clearance? The film includes self-recorded footage from designated terror group Hamas, is that who TIFF is worried about? Terrorists? Never mind the fact that the footage should fall under 'fair dealing' or that it has already been used in other films and art installations, including the Nova exhibition that just wrapped up in Toronto in June. Does TIFF recognize who they are siding with? Hamas has been on Canada's terror list since 2002 and, on Oct. 7, 2023, they murdered over 1,200 innocent people, including eight Canadians. Following the justified Canadian and international outrage, TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey issued a statement on Aug. 13 to try and shift the narrative with a new story regarding alleged 'claims that the film was rejected due to censorship are unequivocally false.' This is called a Red Herring. 'Sure the economy is bad, but the real issue is crime (please stop talking about our economic record)!' Contrast this with TIFF's response last year following their announcement on Sept. 10, 2024 to screen Russian propaganda film, Russians at War, that was protested by Ukrainian Canadians for whitewashing their soldiers' actions in Ukraine: Sept. 11 — TIFF released a statement defending the film and affirming their commitment to artistic expression and free speech Sept. 12 — TIFF pauses screenings of the film Sept. 17 — TIFF resumes screenings of Russians at War and is shown outside of the official festival dates to accommodate for the pause One can't help but notice the stark difference in how TIFF conducted itself in response to these two films. They stood up for one and found a way to screen it, even going outside of last year's festival dates, and cut another on not only the flimsiest of reasons but also the most morally repugnant. So what is the real reason for TIFF uninviting a Canadian filmmaker from screening his documentary about an Israeli grandfather saving his family and rescuing countless other innocent civilians? Is it inherent antisemitism within their ranks as some people have alleged? If they're worried about safety, bowing to the hateful mob all but guarantees disruptions. If this is a matter of art and freedom of expression, then the consistent response would have been for TIFF to defend and screen both films. WARMINGTON: TIFF film censorship shows Toronto's antisemitism to the world KOREN: TIFF's shameful erasure of the Israeli perspective If not, just what are our tax dollars, from all levels of government, funding? If it's not art and it is not supporting Canadian filmmakers like Barry Avrich, then what is the return on investment? As of right now, the ROI is trending negative with TIFF's actions being mocked on the New York Post's Aug. 14 front-page cover. They have caused Toronto and Canada immeasurable reputational damage as its decision appearing to side with a designated terrorist group is ridiculed around the world. Until TIFF finds their moral compass again or, at a bare minimum, can provide films centered on democracies with the same treatment as they do those from authoritarian regimes, not a single taxpayer dollar should fund the festival. — Kevin Vuong is a proud Torontonian, entrepreneur, and military reserve officer. He was previously the Member of Parliament for Toronto's Spadina-Fort York community, which is where the Toronto International Film Festival is headquartered. RECOMMENDED VIDEO
