KUCHING (June 30): The Sunbliss Market, which featured a vibrant mix of handmade crafts, artisanal food stalls, live performances, and family-friendly activities, concluded with resounding success yesterday.
The four-day event, held at MJC Papillon Street Mall, attracted hundreds of visitors and showcased the best of local entrepreneurship, food and creativity, said the SME Association of Sarawak in a statement yesterday.
Highlights of the event included the Little Bosses Market, a colouring contest, and the fiery Spicy King Challenge, making it a fun-filled experience for families, food lovers, and shoppers alike.
With over 30 booths featuring local vendors and indie brands, the Sunbliss Market served as a dynamic platform to celebrate Sarawakian innovation, flavours and small business spirit.
As a proud supporter, the SME Association of Sarawak sponsored event lanyards for all participating vendors and helped amplify awareness through its network of entrepreneurs and members.
At the closing ceremony, SME Association of Sarawak deputy president Achin Wilson Injau and secretary general Alan Wei toured the market and engaged with vendors.
The event was further honoured by the presence of a political secretary to the Premier, Kho Teck Wan, who represented Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
In her speech, Kho commended the organisers for creating a meaningful platform that empowered small businesses and nurtured local talent.

13MP should address S'wak's unique development needs, autonomy rights, says Kota Sentosa rep

Yap says the just-tabled 13MP should provide a clear roadmap for devolution of power to Sarawak in key areas such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure. – Photo by Chimon Upon KUCHING (Aug 3): A Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) lawmaker has raised concerns about the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) reflecting centralised decision-making in Putrajaya, with insufficient Sarawakian input. In stating this, Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap said the just-tabled 13MP should provide a clear roadmap for devolution of power to Sarawak in key areas such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure. 'True progress requires statutory guarantees for need-based funding, not population-based allocations. 'Transparent project implementation with direct Sarawakian oversight is essential,' he said in a statement. Yap, in acknowledging the government's commitments to infrastructure and socio-economic growth, also expressed concerns over the continued use of outdated funding formulae based on per capita distribution. 'This does not reflect Sarawak's actual development needs. 'Sarawak covers 37.6 per cent of Malaysia's landmass, yet our low population density means that federal funding is still benchmarked against headcount, rather than real development needs. 'A kilometre of road in Sarawak, especially in the rural and interior areas, costs exponentially more to construct and maintain than in one in Peninsular Malaysia due to terrains, logistics and climate conditions (in Sarawak).' Yap argued that the current one-size-fits-all funding model failed to take into account Sarawak's unique challenges including severe infrastructure gaps, high construction costs, and underdevelopment stemming from years of federal oversight. He thus called for a funding formula that would be adjusted based on landmass and actual development gaps, ensuring that Sarawak would receive allocations proportional to its size, economic contributions, and local needs. 'Sarawak has bankrolled Malaysia\'s growth through its vast oil and gas resources, yet the returns to Sarawak remain disproportionately low. 'While billions have flowed into federal coffers, many Sarawakians still lack basic infrastructure that should have been addressed decades ago.' Yap also urged the federal government to honour the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and the 18-Point Agreement, meant to guarantee Sarawak greater autonomy over resources, finances, and governance. 'These are legally binding promises, not privileges,' he emphasised. 13MP autonomy lead Wilfred Yap

'It's our best': Sarawak brings signature products to penetrate the Singapore market at Malaysia Fest 2025

SINGAPORE (Bernama): Mi kolok, layer cakes, chocolates, white pepper, and black pepper were among the signature products from the Land of the Hornbills available at the Sarawak Pavilion at the Malaysia Fest 2025 expo currently taking place in Singapore until Sunday (Aug 3). Sarawak Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) Director Norsalawaty Abdul Kadir said these products have their own uniqueness, making them suitable not only for selling directly to visitors but also have export potential. "For example, the Borco branded chocolate from D Mummy's Recipe sold here are made of Bornean cocoa and comes in dabai (Borneo olive), empelajo, and sour brinjal flavours. These are fruit and vegetables grown in Sarawak. "Other markets might have chocolates that contain hazelnut or almond, but Sarawak has empelajo which has a richer taste than almond,' she told Bernama. Norsalawaty said five entrepreneurs from the state have been selected to participate in the Sarawak Pavilion at the expo. She said this first-ever participation by the Sarawak state government through the Ministry of International Trade, Industry, and Investment Sarawak (MINTRED) has been well-received, and hoped that more aspiring entrepreneurs would take part in the expo next year. "We have also matched Sarawakian entrepreneurs and business people with exporters in Singapore. "All the entrepreneurs that we brought here are export ready, including in terms of production capacity, in addition to having the required certification such as halal certification,' she said. Norsalawaty said for the first time at this Malaysia Fest, FAMA had brought in 400 kilograms of citron from Sarawak to allow visitors to sample and enjoy the agricultural produce as part of the "Island of Tropical Fruits' segment. "For the time being, citron is not yet widely grown in Sarawak. If there is demand here, we hope it can motivate our farmers,' she said. FAMA had brought in about 10 tonnes of tropical and seasonal fruit to the expo this time. Jutaan Purnama Sdn Bhd Managing Director, Saiful Hammidi Hamid, said the company's products such as Purnama Taste branded mi kolok, mi kampua and mi pok are looking for opportunities to be exported to Singapore and the wider market. He believed Sarawakian products have their own market as well as able to penetrate the wider international market. "Our products are now marketed not just in Malaysia but also in Paris this year following our participation at the expo there. They have been very well received. We started small through cargo export and recently we started using containers,' he said. Malaysia Fest 2025 themed "Unlock The Treasures of Malaysia' is taking place from July 31 to August 3 at Hall 5A and 5B, Singapore Expo from 10 am to 10 pm. Organised by MegaXpress International with the cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security through FAMA, the programme offers 321 booths and is participated in by 220 Malaysian entrepreneurial companies. - Bernama

Each eligible student will receive RM1,200, disbursed via the S Pay Global platform in two RM600 instalments per semester. This aid, announced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in Kuala Lumpur, is open to all Sarawakian students, regardless of income, signifying a proactive approach to ensuring accessibility and opportunity. Premier Abang Johari emphasised the programme's role in cultivating a globally competitive generation, capable of seizing opportunities both domestically and internationally. This initiative underscores the Sarawak Government's vision of empowering its youths through education, bolstering the State's economic competitiveness on a global scale. The programme's expansion from its initial focus on lower-income households to encompass all full-time diploma and bachelor's degree students highlights a commitment to inclusivity and equity. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof's Facebook post confirmed the approval of 15,000 applications, with payments underway, and announced a second application phase opening in September for new and missed applications. This phased rollout ensures a smooth and efficient distribution of funds, maximising the impact of this significant investment. The BKK exemplifies the Sarawak Government's dedication to its people, translating its strengthening revenue into impactful welfare and education programs. This initiative is not merely a financial handout; it's a powerful symbol of the State's determination to leave no one behind in its pursuit of progress and prosperity. The programme's success will undoubtedly contribute to Sarawak's continued growth and development, driven by a well-educated and empowered populace. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
