With 268 cadaveric donations in 2024, Tamil Nadu bags centre's award
Speaking at the launch of 'Nalam Kaakum Stalin' by Chief Minister MK Stalin, Subramanian said Union Health Minister J P Nadda recently presented the award to Dr N Gopalakrishnan, member secretary, Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN).
Thanking those who saved many lives with their organs, Stalin, in a post on X, recalled that he had pledged for his organs to be donated even when he was Deputy Mayor of Chennai.
Subramanian said the number of cadaveric donations has seen a notable increase after CM's announcement in September 2023 that state honours will be accorded to the deceased whose organs are donated after they are declared brain dead. Subramanian said since then organs of 479 brain dead people have been harvested with the consent of their families since then, saving the lives of thousands of people.
According to the TRANSTAN data, in 2024 the state received 268 donors, of which 146 were from government hospitals (54.48%) and 122 from private hospitals(45.52%). Of the 268, a total of 218 were male donors and 50 were female.
Of the donors, 863 major organs, and 637 minor organs were utilised. In 2022, the state received 156 donors and this increased to 178 in 2023 and 268 in 2024. The number of cadaveric donations last year is the highest since 2008.

Students create awareness on organ donation
Madurai: Marking National Organ Donation Day on Sunday, around 400 students took part in a rally from Government Rajaji Hospital to Madurai Medical College via Panagal Road. The rally, organized by GRH, was started around 8am. Participants carried placards and shouted slogans to raise awareness on organ donations. According to doctors from GRH, the hospital, a top performer in the state, had facilitated 107 kidney transplants from brain dead donors in 2023 and 2024. In 2024, 268 donors had registered in Tamil Nadu, the highest in the country. However, more than 7,300 people still await a kidney transplant in the state, according to data from Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN). Of these, 25 patients die each day without getting a transplant, doctors added. Tamil Nadu is the first state to institutionalise "honour walk", a respectful procession held on the hospital premises to honour brain-dead donors. The practice has been followed at GRH since Sept 2023. The hospital has also received a TRANSTAN award for its leadership in organ donation in the state, doctors said. Dr S Balamurugan, one of the event organisers, said, "Though things have improved on the organ donation frontier in the state, we still need more donors. This requires creating greater awareness. GRH's rally has been taken up for the purpose." Interested donors can register on the TRANSTAN portal or at a govt medical college. Health screening scheme launched under TN CM Stalin's name despite court order pending clarification
CHENNAI: Although the modification petition moved by the Tamil Nadu government seeking clarification on the Madras High Court's interim order restraining the use of names of any living personalities in government schemes will be heard only on Monday, Chief Minister M K Stalin on Saturday launched the 'Nalam Kaakum Stalin' scheme, as planned. The CM inaugurated the scheme, under which health camps will be organised across the state with a comprehensive list of diagnostic tests and consultations with specialist doctors available to the public, at St Bede's Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School in Santhome. A total of 1,256 camps are planned across the state. The first phase of the camps was conducted in various places across all districts on Saturday. The tests available at the camps included blood profile, ECG, echocardiogram, and ultrasound. Speaking at the event, the Chief Minister urged the people to make use of the camps, which will be conducted every Saturday. He said the government's aim is to ensure that medical services accessible to the affluent are also available to the poor and needy in both urban and rural areas. He stated that such camps are organised to provide medical care to those who are unable to visit hospitals.
