Horror sequel with 89% Rotten Tomatoes score has left critics 'disturbed'
An eagerly anticipated horror sequel dubbed 'horrific perfection' is finally being released in the UK.
Bring Her Back is the second film from directing brothers Danny and Michael Philippou, best known for smash hit 2022 film Talk To Me.
Their latest release follows siblings Andy (Billy Barratt) and Piper (Sora Wong), who are placed with foster mother Laura (Sally Hawkins) following the sudden death of their father.
As Laura's behaviour towards Andy becomes increasingly hostile, and their new foster brother Oliver's (Jonah Wren Phillips) behaviour deteriorates, Andy begins to suspect something isn't right in their remote home.
The eerie film has landed an 89% Rotten Tomatoes rating following its release in the US before it arrives in UK cinemas on July 26.
The critics' consensus reads: 'A domestic nightmare that draws its most profound scares from Sally Hawkins' deranged performance, Bring Her Back is an exemplary chiller that reaffirms directors Danny and Michael Philippou as modern masters of horror.'
The Australian said in their review: '[Bring Her Back is] scarier without resorting to chainsaws or any of the other instruments of mayhem that on-screen psychopaths are fond of. It's tense from start to finish and it shows [Danny and Michael Philippou's] strengths as filmmakers.'
Chicago Reader went as far as to laud the film as 'horrific perfection', and ScullyVision said it left their theatre 'squirming in shocked discomfort.'
Rolling Stone wrote: 'The filmmakers want to jolt folks, for sure. But they also want to bring you to a place where the emotional after effects of that juddering linger long after the jump scares have faded away.'
Riot Us said it left their critic feeling 'disturbed', while Always Good Movies added: 'Bring Her Back will probably stick in your gut for a little while, and don't be surprised if you walk away feeling hollow inside.'
Many heaped praise on Paddington star Hawkins as Laura, branded 'the rotten heart and spoiled soul of the movie' and a 'boundlessly talented actor.'
Globe and Mail raved: 'In the devilish hands of Australian filmmaking brothers Danny and Michael Philippou, evil has been concentrated into an exceptionally and impressively nasty 104 minutes.'
'Bring Her Back is an absolutely bonkers horror film, disturbing in the extreme. I don't think I've ever come so close to throwing up in a movie. That's not a criticism, more like a demented badge of honor,' Arizona Republic surmised. More Trending
Speaking ahead of the film's release, Danny shared that the film taps into a painful family memory for him after he, at age 13, found his grandfather dead at home.
'Our father was trying to give him CPR, and I remember so vividly the vomit in his beard,' he told the New York Times.
'That became an inspiration point. Freaky to think about, so you write about that.'
Bring Her Back is released in UK cinemas on July 26. It is available to watch on VOD in the US now .

'It can be destabilising, catastrophic, shocking and all-encompassing when the rest of the world is carrying on around you. It's negotiating your way through that journey that interested me rather than the death itself. Trump speaks out in defence of Sydney Sweeney amid voting controversy
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video President Donald Trump has thrown his support behind Sydney Sweeney after the knowledge that she was a registered Republican sparked outrage among fans. The Euphoria actress. 27, sparked controversy when an American Eagle ad campaign featuring the star was launched with the tagline 'Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.' The pun on the word 'genes' sparked considerable backlash from the public, who compared it to rhetoric surrounding eugenics and white supremacy. In the advertisements, the Immaculate star says: 'Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality, and even eye color. My jeans are blue.' After this, multiple news outlets in the US reported that Sweeney's voting records show her being a registered Republican, though she has not spoken out about this. President Trump has weighed in, saying 'Now I love her ad' after being told the news. 'You'd be surprised at how many people are Republicans,' he added. American Eagle has defended the campaign, writing in a statement: 'Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans' is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. 'We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. 'Great jeans look good on everyone.' The wording has been condemned by many, with people taking to social media to say 'it was never about the jeans.' 'It's giving 'I'm sorry you feel that way',' Moniquebutmo wrote on Instagram in response to American Eagle's statement. 'yup. it's about 'jeans'. after saying jeans 'determine traits like hair color, personality and even eye color',' Luisaleaao pointed out, quoting wording used in the campaign. 'So now 'jeans' are passed down from parents to offspring? 🥴 Let's be fr it was never about jeans,' Mai_ktran added. Others said this 'showed them where not to shop' while deeming the explanation 'laughable.' 'It doesn't matter what your intent was—what matters is the impact. intent ≠ impact,' Gabby Frost explained. Others said they were 'baffled' that an important part of the campaign was not receiving as much publicity as the backlash. American Eagle is launching The Sydney Jean, a limited-run product with 100 percent of the proceeds being donated to Crisis Text Line, a non-profit organisation offering mental health support. 'Apparently the weird fashy American Eagle Sydney Sweeney good jeans/genes campaign is donating some proceeds from jean sales to a charity for domestic violence survivors which is nice but also why didn't you lead with that. Just say that instead of making it a dog whistle good god,' Audrey wrote on X. 'I don't care about Sydney Sweeney and the 'good jeans' nonsense or whatever. I do think it's a very interesting choice though to be like 'Yeah that ad was supposed to be a message about domestic violence' 💀 right… whatever you say, man,' Hayden posted. PoeticSeraphim added: 'Making an ad that focuses on her body with creepy camera angles as a way to highlight a campaign for domestic abuse victims shows she has never spoken to a victim.' More Trending In 2022, Sweeney hit back at those criticising her for posting photos with family members wearing right-wing political clothing. 'An innocent celebration for my moms milestone 60th birthday has turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention (sic),' she wrote on Instagram. She added: 'Please stop making assumptions. Much love to everyone and Happy Birthday Mom!' Metro has contacted representatives for Sydney Sweeney for comment Got a story? EastEnders legend 'much happier' since quitting after 30 years
Former EastEnders legend Natalie Cassidy is a very busy woman currently. She's written a book about motherhood, become involved in several TV projects and is appearing on Cooking With The Stars on ITV. She also has a podcast, Life With Nat, and in a recent episode she chatted with fellow EastEnder Kellie Bright, who plays Linda Carter in the BBC soap, and opened up about her own feelings about leaving the show. Natalie left EastEnders earlier this year, after playing the role of Sonia Fowler for 32 years. She joined the soap in 1993 and over the years was part of some of the show's most memorable storylines. In a statement at the time she said it was time to move on to pastures new. 'EastEnders is in my bones so I will never forget where I started my career and I will continue to love the show,' she said. Now, speaking to Kellie in the podcast, she said that she has no regrets about the decision. 'I don't miss it, I don't. I miss the people. It's full on,' she told her former colleague. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'I do feel happier doing the things I'm doing now. I always feel like I have to say it, I loved it, I'm grateful for it but I did fall into it and that was that, and that's what I did for 30 years, I don't know if I was meant to do that.' Kellie insisted that she thought Natalie was meant to do exactly that. 'I grew up watching Sonia, like the rest of the nation, and I loved you in the show all the way through. I loved your character, what you created. You're a brilliant actress, Nat.' With many more strings to her bow, Natalie's book Happy Days will be released in October. The book promises to cover a lot of ground, 'taking her readers on a journey through the highs and lows and the changing seasons of life. From yo-yo diets to raising strong girls, coping with grief to getting acting lessons from June Brown.' More Trending She's also fronted a consumer rights show on Channel 4 called What's The Big Deal: Britain's Best Buys, while Cooking With The Stars sees her competing against stars including Jordan North, Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu and Hugh Dennis to showcase her culinary skills. Despite all this there's an element of life on EastEnders that Natalie does miss. View More » 'I loved the prep, getting the scripts,' she recalled. 'I never got bored of getting a script.
