SMEs still lagging in digitalisation journey, says Gobind
The Digital Minister said that to address the issue, the ministry is working hard through initiatives like the Business Digitalisation Initiative (BDI), recently launched by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation, to help SMEs accelerate the adoption of digital technology in their operations.
'The government has also set aside RM50mil for digital matching grants for SMEs and digital grants for vendors.
'Global technology companies based in Malaysia, such as Microsoft and Alibaba Cloud, are working closely with the government to assist SMEs through multiple programmes,' he said in his keynote address at the CTOS SME Biz Day 2025 yesterday.
Gobind said the government is also committed to ensuring that SMEs are prioritised in navigating current geopolitical challenges with funds allocated for this purpose, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Parliament on Monday.
He said the government's initiatives have always been designed to provide SMEs with the resources, knowledge and support they need to navigate the digital landscape effectively.
'Our vision is to create a digitally empowered Malaysia, where every business, regardless of size, can thrive in our national digital ecosystem.
'We are committed to fostering an environment that supports innovation, digital adoption and, ultimately, building up Malaysia as a strong digital nation,' he said, Bernama reported.
On Monday, Anwar announced that the government has agreed to increase government guarantees under the Business Financing Guarantee Scheme by RM1bil to assist SMEs affected by the recent United States' reciprocal tariff announcement in securing loans from commercial banks.
Additionally, another RM50mil will be allocated to the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation to expedite efforts for SMEs to explore new markets through participation in international trade expos and exhibitions, as well as facilitating business matching with foreign buyers.

Executive Vice President Li Huidi said that AI is now at the forefront of a new wave of technological and industrial transformation, becoming increasingly user-friendly and widely accessible, and emerging as a new driver of social progress. Malaysia unveils National Cloud Computing Policy
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia reaffirms its ambition to become a leading regional cloud and digital hub by 2030 with the launch of the National Cloud Computing Policy (NCCP), a strategic blueprint that focuses on five core pillars guiding sustainable cloud adoption in Malaysia. Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said yesterday this policy directly supports the objectives of MyDigital and the Malaysia Digital Economy Blueprint by unlocking real economic potential. 'The NCCP is fully aligned with the Malaysia Cyber Security Strategy (MCSS). 'It implements robust security frameworks to protect national data and build public trust. 'It upholds data sovereignty, ensuring Malaysian laws govern data generated within Malaysia. 'Further, it also introduces a sound regulatory framework, one that provides clear direction for stakeholders to develop specific policies tailored to their needs, while ensuring flexibility within a unified national strategy. 'This approach empowers each sector to adapt and innovate, without compromising alignment with the broader national vision. 'Importantly, this policy also places sustainability at its core,' he told delegates during the launch of the NCCP at the Asean AI Summit 2025. Gobind said the NCCP is promoting green cloud computing practices, from energy-efficient data centres to environmentally friendly infrastructure. Elaborating on the NCCP's five pillars, Gobind said the policy, for the public sector, mandates cloud adoption in all government agencies, modernising infrastructure to boost efficiency, enhance transparency, and deliver faster, more reliable citizen-centred services. For businesses, especially SMEs, the NCCP drives growth, fosters innovation, and levels the playing field through scalable cloud solutions, supported by collaboration between academia, local providers and global tech leaders. For citizens, NCCP enhances data protection and privacy, promotes digital inclusivity for both urban and rural communities, and advocates for environmental sustainability through resource-efficient cloud practices that minimise environmental impact. Gobind said the NCCP will evolve as technologies change, but its purpose remains constant, which enables progress, protects national interests, and uplifts Malaysians. He envisions a nation where government digital services are faster, more affordable, and accessible – eliminating long queues for tasks such as passport renewals, licence applications, and permit processing. 'Achieving this requires building strong digital foundations, leveraging new technologies, and continuously enhancing our infrastructure to deliver seamless, citizen-focused services. 'I urge the government, industry, academia, and civil society to embrace the opportunities of cloud computing offers. 'Let us move forward together with a whole-of-nation mindset to build a digital future that is resilient, inclusive, and globally competitive,' he said. Gobind: 13MP Highlights Technology, AI To Boost Malaysia's Digital Transformation
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- The 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) clearly emphasises technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), in line with the government's push to accelerate the country's digital transformation, said Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo. He said one of the key priorities highlighted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is the development of the AI Nation Framework, which aims to fully leverage the country's 5G network to create digital solutions, including smart city initiatives using existing data. 'The 13MP also emphasises 'data commission'. The Prime Minister has made it clear that the concept of a data bank is closely linked to digital trust, among other related areas. 'These are steps that we see as supporting the aspiration to achieve AI nation status in the near future,' Gobind told reporters after launching the 5G Enterprise and AI City Grant today. He said this initiative will be featured at the upcoming Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur 2025 (SCEKL25), scheduled for Sept 17–19, which will serve as a platform to showcase Malaysia's smart city transformation and foster collaboration among city leaders, innovators, and digital solution providers. Leveraging world-class 5G connectivity, the minister said Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) have been tasked with leading the AI Cities initiative, which builds upon and complements the Smart Cities programme under the Ministry of Housing and Local Government. 'I hope these efforts have — and will continue to — lay the groundwork for real, actionable innovation. By aligning strategic leadership with on-the-ground execution, we have seen how national initiatives can translate into meaningful local impact. 'The grants awarded today are a direct outcome of this alignment — where policy meets purpose, and vision meets implementation,' the minister said. The grant was awarded to 14 recipients, comprising universities, companies, and local authorities.
