Canelo vs Scull: Former world champions make their predictions for undisputed title fight

Independent27-05-2025

Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez will make his bid to become a two-time undisputed super middleweight champion on May 3 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia - taking on the IBF champion William Scull live on DAZN PPV .
What have some of boxing's most respected voices been saying about this fight in the build-up?
Roy Jones Jr
Roy Jones Jr appeared on the Ring Champs podcast and made his predictions for the undisputed clash this weekend.
The former four-weight world champion foresaw that Scull, if he stays true to his Cuban heritage, could pose a threat to Canelo.
'We don't expect this guy to beat Canelo,' Jones Jr explained.
'[But] who were the only two people to give Canelo a really hard time – Floyd Mayweather [Jr] who was a supreme boxer and Erislandy Lara who is a Cuban extreme boxer.
"[ Cubans ] are mindful boxers, usually have very good feet and both caused Canelo the most problems in his career. If this guy has any boxing IQ and he has any kind of feet - this could be a rough night for Canelo, but if he doesn't then Canelo should walk through him'
George Groves
The former WBA super middleweight champion and one half of the legendary Froch-Groves rivalry did not see Scull as any competition for Alvarez. He cast him aside as a stepping stone for Canelo to reach a super fight with Terence Crawford and believed there were no fighters at super middleweight who could lay a glove on the Mexican.
'You go against Canelo at your peril,' Groves told CasinoBeats.
'Because he's been so dominant at super middleweight over the years. I can't see Crawford putting a dent in him. Obviously, he's got to get past Scull first, but I don't think he'll struggle to win that fight. But at super middleweight, I haven't seen anyone of late who I think is going to give him a run for his money.'
Teddy Atlas
Teddy Atlas is a well-known boxing trainer, most recognised for his work assisting Hall of Fame trainer Cus D'Amato in developing a young Mike Tyson and guiding Michael Moorer to the world heavyweight championship in 1994.
Since retiring as a trainer, he has been an active voice in the boxing world and has weighed in on Canelo-Scull, believing that Canelo will win in whichever way he sees fit.
'Unless Canelo is mentally off,' Atlas explained on his YouTube channel The Fight with Teddy Atlas. 'I think this is the kind of night where he can write his own story and his own ending to the story. It's up to Canelo completely. I see what can be a very handy, if not easy win for Canelo.'
Juan Manuel Marquez
As a compatriot to Canelo, it is unsurprising that Juan Manuel Marquez should show strong support for the unified super-middleweight champion. This is exactly what the former four-weight world champion did when asked about Scull's chances in the fight.
Marquez dismissed Scull.
'William Scull is nobody," Marquez told ES NEWS. "He is nobody in the sport of boxing – He's the IBF champion but do you know William Scull? I don't know William Scull.'

Algerian boxing bosses issue furious response for 'violating' Imane Khelif's rights amid leaked medical report

The Algerian Boxing Federation have accused World Boxing of 'violating' Olympic champion Imane Khelif's rights. Khelif was at the centre of a bitter storm during last year's Olympics as the 25-year-old and Taiwan 's Lin Yu-ting 's were allowed to compete despite both being disqualified from the previous year's World Championships for allegedly failing gender eligibility tests while the sport was run by the International Boxing Association (IBA). World Boxing, who are now the governing body for the sport, announced on Friday that it will introduce mandatory sex testing for male and female boxers who want to take part in competitions, and specifically referenced Khelif. Algerian boxing officials have reacted furiously to Khelif being named, claiming it has 'created psychological damage to our athlete'. The letter written by the Algerian Federation President added that the 'consequences are immeasurable' and that Khelif had not been given 'the right to defend herself'. Their statement also claimed World Boxing did not 'hear from the doctors specialising in endocrinology who follow her'. Algerian Boxing's outrage comes after World Boxing president Boris van der Worst offered an apology for Khelif being specifically named, admitting 'her privacy should have been respected'. 'I am writing to you following the recent World Boxing statement referencing Imane Khelif being excluded from competing in the forthcoming Eindhoven Box Cup 5-10 June 2025,' the letter read. 'As part of World Boxing's communications activity around this decision, Imane was identified by name. I am writing to you all personally to offer a formal and sincere apology for this and acknowledge that her privacy should have been protected. 'To offer some broader context on this, the statement was intended as part of a wider announcement relating to the planned introduction of mandatory sex testing as part of a new policy on 'Sex Age and Weight' that World Boxing is in process of finalising. 'This policy is intended to apply universally to all male and female athletes and is designed to ensure the safety of all participants and deliver a competitive level playing field for all men and women.' The governing body also confirmed past performances results achieved by boxers will not be under review. This comes amid a call from JK Rowling to strip Khelif of her Olympic gold medal. The publication of the new rules and subsequent apology has all come in the same week that a 'leaked' medical report was published which claimed to have found Imane Khelif to be 'biologically male' in 2023. The alleged medical test on Khelif at the 2023 World Championships said that 'chromosome analysis reveals male karotype' - an XY chromosome pair. Khelif always insisted on being female and the IOC allowed athletes to compete at the Parisian Games based on the sex stated on their passport. Now the IOC has broken its silence on the 'leaked' report which declares Khelif as having a 'male karotype,' as reportedly seen by 3 Wire Sports. 'The IOC has always made it clear that eligibility criteria are the responsibility of the respective International Federation,' a spokesperson told Mail Sport. 'The factors that matter to sports performance are unique to each sport, discipline, and/or event. 'We await the full details of how sex testing will be implemented in a safe, fair, and legally enforceable way.'

U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation says it will open two aid distribution centers on Thursday

DUBAI, June 5 (Reuters) - U.S-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) said it will open two aid distribution centers on Thursday. GHF had said earlier that its sites would not open at their usual time due to maintenance and repair work. It did not say when aid distribution would resume. The group, which has been fiercely criticised by humanitarian organisations, including the United Nations, began distributing aid last week. The U.N. has warned that most of Gaza's 2.3 million population is at risk of famine after an 11-week Israeli blockade of the enclave.

Director Sean Ellis said to Variety: 'Your brain is starved of calories, basically. 'It was going to be impossible for him to work while dieting. So, he came to us at his lightest, and then he starts to eat. "So that meant that we had to shoot the film [with] the ending first and the beginning of the movie at the end. "Over the 25 days that we were shooting, he was putting on the calories. And then it's edited in reverse.' Bloom, now 48, added: 'I was more surprised about the mental aspect of [it], like the sleep deprivation, and not the depleted calories. 'There's a lot going on in your brain living in that headspace for a while was very challenging.' Sam Thompson left gobsmacked as he's surprised by huge Hollywood A-lister during his 280-mile endurance challenge Even Bloom's co-star Caitriona Balfe - who plays his on-screen wife in the film - was stunned by his gaunt face and body.
