JD Vance goes on holiday, gets the great British ‘sod off'
Around 60 people gathered for the demonstration in the town of Charlbury in the Cotswolds region, carrying signs including 'Go Home', 'Not Welcome Party' and 'Sod Off'.
UK police and US security detail dotted the usually quiet roads leading to the nearby hamlet where Vance was staying, blocking some roads and footpaths in the countryside region popular with tourists.
'The people of the Cotswolds are out here today telling JD Vance that he is not welcome here,' Jake Atkinson from the Stop Trump Coalition told AFP at the gathering.
Co-organiser Atkinson cited US President Donald Trump's policies including on immigration and the war in Gaza for the local anger.
He said the anti-Trump coalition would also turn out against the US president, who is due in the UK for a state visit in September.
Earlier in the day, a black van bearing a meme image of Vance edited to look bald and bloated drove past the quaint cottages and winding streets of the town.
'We wanted to extend the same welcome that he extended to (Volodymyr) Zelensky from the White House,' said 75-year-old Charlbury resident Lou Johnson, referring to the cold reception Vance gave the Ukrainian leader during a press conference in Washington in February.
Vance kicked off his British holiday last week by meeting UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, who hosted the American politician in his country retreat in Chevening in Kent, southeast of London.
Reports have also said Vance will later visit Scotland, where Trump spent five days at his golf resorts last month.
Heightened security
Residents said they were surprised by the heavy security around Dean, the village where Vance was staying.
'If somebody's just in the Cotswolds on holiday, you wouldn't imagine they'd need a 20-car motorcade and all the roads to the entire village,' said Phil Ball, 53, a local resident and cameraman.
'It's been disruptive and quite a surprise.'
Victoria Dawson, an artist from nearby Witney, said locals were protesting 'against somebody who we think is immoral... somebody who is doing terrific damage around the world along with Trump'.
'Because JD Vance is here, suddenly roads are closed everywhere, there are police everywhere,' she added. 'It's not what we expect or accept.'
Lou Johnson also complained that heightened security had been 'invading everywhere' in the rural area he has called home for 50 years.
'People think it's just a gentle little village but every now and then we do stand up for what we believe in,' said Johnson. — AFP

PETALING JAYA : Penang DAP chairman Steven Sim has called for police action against Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh for defying a police directive and allegedly disrupting public order in Kepala Batas, Penang. Sim, who is also the human resources minister and deputy DAP secretary-general, said police had advised against any gatherings in the area. He said DAP had complied with the instruction and only sent local representatives to distribute Jalur Gemilang flags in conjunction with National Day celebrations. 'The protest was clearly in defiance of the police order and in breach of the law. It was a provocation that threatened public peace,' he said in a statement. Sim said Penang DAP would lodge a police report over the incident and urged the authorities to send a clear message that such behaviour would not be tolerated. Earlier this evening, Malaysiakini reported that Akmal and his wing members had gathered in front of a hardware store in Kepala Batas, Penang, whose owner was seen in a now-viral video hanging the Jalur Gemilang upside down. He had previously threatened to stage a 'class' to teach the man how to correctly fly the Jalur Gemilang if the man was not charged in court for his mistake. Police had advised against the protest, noting the shop owner had already apologised and explained the matter. Separately, former Penang deputy chief minister P Ramasamy said Akmal was holding the country 'to ransom' over the incident. The Urimai chairman said in a statement that this was not Akmal's first act of 'intimidation and bullying', and that it would not be his last as long as law enforcement failed to act. He also criticised DAP's flag distribution efforts, calling it a misstep that gave Akmal an excuse to escalate tensions. The police also appeared to lack the will to contain the situation, he added. Yesterday, former deputy law minister Ramkarpal Singh questioned Akmal's apparent 'immunity' despite several police reports being lodged over his remarks on the upside-down flag and called for a sedition probe. He said Akmal had issued several 'extreme and unacceptable' statements, which were divisive and contained racial undertones that could threaten public order.

Akmal Saleh says summoned by Bukit Aman over Jalur Gemilang protest, but won't fear critics
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh said today that he has been called by the federal police to give his statement tonight over the protest he led on the display of Jalur Gemilang in Kepala Batas, Penang yesterday. He said he was called to the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur at 11pm. 'If this is the price I must pay to defend the honour of this nation, I am willing and will fight to the very end. 'As for fearing their lot — never!!! No fear, no surrender!!!' he posted on Facebook. Earlier, the Attorney General's Chambers warned Malaysians against vigilantism in cases involving the improper display of the Jalur Gemilang, amid furore over Umno Youth's protest in Kepala Batas. The AGC also warned the public against provoking or issuing threats against the individuals or organisations concerned. It added members of the public must not assume the role of the authorities, such as ordering the removal of flags or seizing materials without legal power. This morning, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the protest amounted to bullying and intimidation of the trader and a subversion of the rule of law. Loke had instructed its youth wings nationwide to lodge police reports against the Umno Youth protest under Section 503 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, Section 504 for intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace, and Section 505 for statements conducing to public mischief. Party secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook said reports would also be made under Section 507B of the Penal Code for causing harassment, distress, fear or anxiety, and Section 507C for uttering words likely to cause such effects. Yesterday, the police had urged the cancellation of a planned gathering in Bertam over the issue of Malaysian flag, to prevent any confrontation between opposing groups. Umno Youth however proceeded with its protest, with hundreds attending, along with a counter-protest by civil society Lawyers for Liberty.

Use of Section 353 in probe against PSM No 2 ‘troubling', says Suaram

PETALING JAYA : Suara Rakyat Malaysia (Suaram) has condemned the use of Section 353 of the Penal Code in the probe against Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) deputy chairman S Arutchelvan over a peaceful assembly outside Parliament on Aug 13. Suaram executive director Azura Nasron said invoking Section 353 for using criminal force to deter a public servant from carrying out their duties was 'grossly disproportionate' as police had blocked the workers from approaching Parliament. Calling it a 'troubling escalation', she said it was a serious departure from previous protest-related probes, which were usually conducted under Section 186 for obstruction. 'It is shifting blame onto citizens exercising their constitutional right to peaceful assembly, while failing to hold police accountable for their failure to facilitate the protest effectively. 'Public assemblies outside Parliament predate the Peaceful Assembly Act and are part of Malaysia's democratic tradition. 'But since 2020, police have increasingly pushed demonstrators away from Parliament gates to the base of the hill,' she said in a statement. A scuffle occurred when police stopped a group of more than 100 estate workers, led by Arutchelvan, from marching to the Parliament gates. The workers had walked from Taman Tugu to submit a memorandum on housing and a draft bill making it compulsory for estates to provide homes for local plantation workers. Although blocked from gathering at the gates, the group managed to hand over the documents to deputy law and institutional reform minister M Kulasegaran and opposition chief whip Takiyuddin Hassan. However, Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadli Marsus said yesterday that the commotion left a police officer injured, and that an investigation had been launched. Arutchelvan was also summoned to the Dang Wangi police station this afternoon. Azura said such actions undermine the purpose of peaceful assembly, which is to deliver demands directly to elected representatives. She urged police to drop the probe and called on the home ministry to review protest protocols, especially around high-security areas like the Parliament.
