Selayang crackdown: Authorities raid 225 premises to weed out undocumented migrants
KUALA LUMPUR, May 30 — Authorities mounted raids on 225 residences and commercial units in Selayang Utara, near here last night in Op Kachi, to check illegal immigrants.
Deputy director for the General Operations Force (GOF) of Bukit Aman's Internal Security and Public Order Department, Datuk Mohamad Suzrin Mohamad Rodhi, said 1,435 individuals were screened during the integrated operation, which began at 10.45pm and ended at 6am this morning.
'Myanmar nationals made up the highest count with 1,222 individuals, including 160 children, while the rest comprised citizens of India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Indonesia,' he said at a press conference following the operation.
Mohamad Suzrin said the majority of them are workers at Selayang Wholesale Market and nearby businesses.
He said that some of the illegal immigrants held United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cards, adding that they were handed over to the Immigration Department for verification of the authenticity of the cards.
He added that the individuals were also found to have committed various offences under laws enforced by the Immigration Department, the Energy Commission, the National Water Services Commission (SPAN), and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
'The offences included overstaying, lack of valid travel documents, electricity metres tampering, illegal water connections, and operating businesses without licences,' he said, adding that accommodations raided had been illegally modified to house a large number of occupants and have unauthorised utility connections.
According to Mohamad Suzrin, the raids were mounted following public complaints regarding the large number of illegal immigrants in the area.
Coordinated by the police, the operation also involved the Immigration Department, DBKL, the Energy Commission, SPAN, the Malaysian Civil Defence Force, St John Malaysia, and Tenaga Nasional Berhad, with a total of 560 personnel. — Bernama

His trip came amid US President Donald Trump's tariff war, which hit Vietnam with at least 47 per cent levies. According to Macron's aides, France's 'Indo-Pacific strategy' proposes a third way to the countries of the region. 'We want to be able to work with the Americans and the Chinese. We want to have the best relations in the world, but not to be dependent on them. We want our sovereignty and stability to be respected everywhere,' Macron said. 'Under the new partnership, we will enhance cooperation in other areas, including deployment of defence technology and critical and emerging technologies,' Wong said during a joint news conference with Macron. The two countries signed 13 agreements covering nuclear energy, defense cooperation, joint research, and mutual protection of classified information, Anadolu reported. Wong said the nations would also 'deepen our cooperation in existing sectors and expand our collaboration in new areas like decarbonisation and digitalisation.' He also announced plans to establish more high-level dialogue between senior officials. Singapore PM: Israel's aid restrictions ‘unacceptable', may be breaching humanitarian law
SINGAPORE, May 31 — The restrictions imposed by Israel on the delivery of humanitarian supplies to Gaza are completely unacceptable and cannot be justified, Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said on Friday. 'In our opinion, it may even be a likely breach of international humanitarian law,' he said at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron, who is on his first state visit to Singapore since Thursday. Wong said that while Singapore recognised Israel's security concerns, its response however has gone too far and resulted in a terrible humanitarian disaster. He said Singapore has joined countries around the world in calling for an immediate ceasefire, unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid, the protection of civilians, and the return of hostages. Wong added that beyond the current crisis, Singapore supports the right of the Palestinian people to their own homeland. 'This must be achieved through a negotiated two-state solution, as it remains the only path to a comprehensive, just, and durable solution to the long-standing Israel-Palestine conflict,' he said. Wong said Singapore would participate in international efforts towards a lasting solution to the conflict, including the international conference led by France and Saudi Arabia scheduled for next month. — Bernama

No proof of MCA being sidelined, say Umno leaders

Umno Supreme Council member Shahaniza Shamsuddin said MCA continues to be involved in Umno programmes and even holds positions in BN-led state governments, such as in Pahang. She cited the appointment of Temerloh MCA chief Wong Tat Chee as an assemblyman in Pahang, as well as that of former MCA Youth chief Nicole Wong as a special officer to deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also Umno president. 'What evidence is there of MCA being sidelined? Even MCA president Wee Ka Siong attended Umno's 79th anniversary celebration. 'MCA should focus on strengthening BN to win the 16th general election and move forward,' she told FMT, dismissing the allegations as merely the personal opinion of certain individuals. Yesterday, former MCA vice-president Ti Lian Ker said the party must assert its own direction in view of the fact that members were increasingly feeling that they had been left in the lurch by BN lynchpin Umno. He said MCA members were of the view that Umno was favouring DAP, the party's bitter rival. Ti said that it would be 'irresponsible' for MCA to abandon BN in its current state, but felt the party should strive to win seats in the next general election without relying on its allies. Meanwhile, Puteri Umno chief Nurul Amal Fauzi urged MCA to work with Umno to rebuild BN, which has seen a steady decline since losing its grip on federal power after GE14. 'BN is the best coalition to represent all communities and was widely accepted until the rise of Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional. We should be thinking not just about our respective parties, but about the country,' she said, calling on MCA to join forces in attracting young voters. 'Together, we must help them understand the importance of politics in ensuring national stability for all.'
