Ranchi: Even after a month into the new academic session (2025–26), students of govt schools in Jharkhand continue to wait for their textbooks. The session of govt schools commenced on April 1.Despite the education department's provision of free textbooks for Classes I to XII, many districts received only partial consignments, leaving students without essential learning materials. While the education department distributes textbooks to Classes I to VIII under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan and to Classes IX to XII through state funding, the annual delay in the tendering and supply chain process continues to disrupt academic progress.State general secretary of Akhil Jharkhand Prathmik Sikshak Sangh (AJPSS), Rammurti Thakur, said, "Books are rarely distributed at the start of the academic session, and in many cases, students do not receive them til mid-year."In several districts, only a limited number of classes have received textbooks. In Ranchi, for instance, textbooks for Classes II, III, and V have been received, while books for the remaining classes are still awaited. According to education officials, books for other classes are expected this week.As per AJPSS, in Chatra, Class I studnents have received their textbooks. Ramgarh has received books for only Classes III and VI. In Garhwa, textbooks have reached only Classes I and X, and even there, distribution remains incomplete. In Palamu, Classes VI and X have received books. In Jamtara, apart from three Mukhyamantri Utkrisht Vidyalayas, no other school has received books. Bokaro has received textbooks for Class VI only. In Deoghar, textbooks for Classes I, II, VI, VIII, and IX have been received. However, full-scale distribution remains pending, with only Classes II and VII receiving books in a majority of schools so far.West Singhbhum has reported distribution of books for Classes III and VI, and a few schools have received textbooks for Class VII. In Lohardaga, the books have been distributed for Class I while in Dhanbad, the situation remains unsatisfactory, with books for Classes I and X distributed.Nasim Ahmed, principal of Government Middle School, Ormanjhi, said, "Every year, delays in tendering, printing, and distribution cause the textbooks to reach schools late. We are relying on textbooks from the previous session for teaching, and students are also making use of them."Administrative officer at Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC), S D Tigga, said, "Books are being delivered to schools and the process is expected to be completed soon."

BJP accuses Trinamool of ‘booth jam, rigging' in Kaliganj bypoll; voting continues amidst rain

In West Bengal's Kaliganj, one of the five Assembly Constituencies across the country, which went to bye-election on Thursday (June 19, 2025), allegations flew thick and fast. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, Ashish Ghosh, alleged that polling officials deliberately marked with ink on his middle finger instead of the customary index finger. 'This was done in a pre-planned manner. Initially, they did not put ink on my finger. Then they did, after I went back for it. But before I could say anything, they put the ink on my middle finger. This was premeditated,' Mr. Ghosh alleged after he cast his vote in a booth at Debgram in Kaliganj. The bye-election to the Kaliganj seat in Nadia district was necessitated after the passing of Trinamool Congress MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed on February 2. The seat saw a three-pronged contest with Mr. Ahmed's daughter Alifa Ahmed as the Trinamool candidate, Ashish Ghosh for the BJP, and Kalbiluddin Sheikh of the Congress, who fought in alliance with the Left front, in the fray. On Thursday (June 19, 2025), the BJP accused the Trinamool of 'booth capturing' at multiple places in Kaliganj. 'The Trinamool did not allow our polling agents in two booths. I have informed the Election Commission. Booth jam and rigging are part of the Trinamool's culture,' Mr. Ghosh said. However, the Trinamool candidate, Ms. Ahmed, denied such allegations and said the opposition parties do not have 'organisational strength in Kaliganj' and should focus on 'working for the people' instead. Rain mars polling Voting continued on Thursday (June 19, 2025) amidst pouring rain in the constituency. 'I am confident that the people of Kaliganj will stand by our side… However, we are fighting not just against two political entities today but also the adverse weather conditions. It has been raining heavily since morning,' Ms. Ahmed said. While there were no reports of violence, many local people alleged that they could not arrive at their polling booths due to lack of transport, including ferry boats. As of 5 p.m., Election Commission officials pegged the turnout in Kaliganj at nearly 70%. The number is expected to increase as the voting closes. Kaliganj has 2,52,670 electors in total, according to the revised electoral list published by the Election Commission on May 5. A total of 14 companies of central forces had been deployed in the constituency for the bypoll. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari took to social media to accuse the Trinamool Congress of displaying 'regional bias' and an 'anti-Gujarati mindset' in its letter to the Chief Election Commissioner dated June 18, 2025, regarding the selection of a Gujarat-based webcasting agency for polling in the Kaliganj constituency.

Kaliganj bypolls: TMC candidate Alifa Ahmed urges people to

Nadia (West Bengal) [India], June 19 (ANI): Trinamool Congress' candidate Alifa Ahmed, for West Bengal's Kaliganj assembly constituency, cast her vote on Thursday for the ongoing bypolls and urged the people to come out in large numbers and 'vote for the right party.' 'It is an important day for me. Voting is the biggest right in the Constitution, and I feel proud to use that right. Voting is currently underway in five of the Assembly constituencies across the country. Apart from Kaliganj- Gujarat's Visavadar and Kadi, Kerala's Nilambur, and Punjab's Ludhiana West. In Kaliganj, BJP's Ashish Ghosh and Congress' Kabil Uddin Shaikh are also contesting in the by-election. As of Election Commission data till 11 AM, Voter turnout in the Assembly by-elections saw varied participation, with Kaliganj recording 30.34%, the highest out of 5 constituencies. Nilambur had 30.15%, Visavadar 28.15%, Kadi 23.85%, and Ludhiana West at 21.51%, as per the Election Commission of India. The polling began at 7 am for the assembly constituency seat. A mock poll was held just before the polling booth opened, with the visuals showing election officials casting a vote and conducting a mock-polling drill before the actual polling begins. The results of all the constituencies will be declared on June 23. On Punjab's Ludhiana seat, the BJP has fielded Jiwan Gupta as its candidate. The Aam Aadmi Party has chosen Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora from the seat, which fell vacant after the death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi due to a self-inflicted bullet injury last year. On Gujarat's Visavadar constituency, the BJP has fielded Kirit Patel, Congress has nominated Nitin Ranpariya, while AAP has placed its former Gujarat president, Gopal Italia. Five Assembly bypolls in four states today: What is at stake for key players

ON THURSDAY, five Assembly seats across four states will vote in crucial bypolls. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the CPI(M) are looking at the bypolls in West Bengal and Kerala, where they are in power respectively, as precursors to the Assembly polls slated next year in their states. A bypoll win would give them a boost in the 2026 final, with the campaigns reflecting their stakes. The BJP wants to retain its old bastion in Gujarat, but it is also hoping to clinch another seat where the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is steadily growing. In Punjab, the ruling AAP is facing a challenge from not only the Congress but also the BJP. The results for the bypolls will be declared on June 23. The bypoll here was necessitated by the resignation of the CPI(M)-backed Independent legislator P V Anvar. A win will be a shot in the arm for the CPI(M) ahead of the Assembly elections, which it would face while being the incumbent for an unprecedented two terms. The Congress, which lost the Nilambur seat in the 2021 polls with a margin of 2,700 votes, has mounted a stiff challenge the CPI(M) and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. CM Vijayan has handpicked M Swaraj as the CPI(M)'s candidate from the seat, who has had a sharp rise in the party. The Congress has nominated its old-timer Aryadan Shoukath from the seat, who had also contested in 2016. Shoukath brings with him legacy too, with his late father Aryadan Mohammad winning the seat eight times before. In the 2021 Bengal Assembly polls, TMC leader Nasiruddin Ahmed, known as Lal in the party circles, won from the Kaliganj constituency by 46,987 votes against the BJP's Abhijit Ghosh. It was Ahmed's second win from the seat. Ahmed died in February this year after a cardiac arrest. His daughter Alifa Ahmed is now contesting the bypoll on the TMC's ticket, who is taking on the BJP's Ashish Ghosh and the Congress's Kabil Uddin. The TMC has a base in the seat owing to Ahmed's groundwork over the years and his popularity among its large Muslim population. However, the campaigns of the contenders for the bypoll in the constituency has been charged. The BJP targeted the TMC over the recent Murshidabad riots in which three persons were killed and several people were left homeless. The TMC, in turn, accused the BJP of 'communal polarisation'. Clearly, the BJP wants to break the TMC's hold on this minority-dominated seat in Nadia district. Their face-off would also play out in the run-up to the 2026 Assembly polls. Visvadar in Gujarat's Junagadh district fell vacant after sitting AAP MLA Bhupendra Bhayani joined the ruling BJP. Bhayani is not contesting the seat, with the BJP having fielded Kirit Patel as its candidate, who is a cooperative leader and a former district party president. The AAP seems to have left no stone unturned to wrest the seat back, fielding Gopal Italia, one of the faces of the Patidar agitation in the state. After keeping a low-profile following the Delhi poll debacle in February this year, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal addressed a number of public meetings in Visavadar and led a road-show in support of Italia. In the 2022 polls, the AAP had won the seat by getting 45% of total polled votes. The BJP lost the seat by 7,063 votes. The Congress has give ticket to party leader Nitin Ranpariya, while the Praja Shakti Democratic Party (PSDP), launched by former chief minister Shankersinh Vaghela, has also fielded its candidate here. This bypoll was necessitated due to the death of the incumbent AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi. The AAP has fielded industrialist and its Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora. Trying to leave nothing to chance, the AAP's top brass — including Kejriwal and senior leaders Manish Sisodia and former Delhi CM Atishi — have campaigned in support of Arora. The Congress has fielded Bharat Bhushan Ashu and his campaign too seems to have got traction here. But the winner could be determined by the BJP candidate's performance Since its creation in 1977, the Ludhiana West constituency has never been won by the BJP. Out of the ten elections held in the seat since, the Congress bagged it six times, the BJP's former ally Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) clinched two victories, and the erstwhile Janata Party won it once. However, the BJP is sensing a chance this time as the party believes its candidate Jiwan Gupta would cut into the votes of both the AAP and the Congress. In 2022, the AAP's Gogi had defeated the Congress's Ashu by 7,512 votes.
