Baghdad's "City of Gold" to Become Major Economic Engine

By John Lee. The City of Gold project in Baghdad, recently approved by Iraq's Minister of Trade and endorsed by the Ministerial Council for the Economy, has been hailed by the Trade and Economic Research Centre (TREC) as a transformational initiative that could significantly reshape the country's economic landscape. Dr. Mudhhir Mohammed Saleh, Financial Advisor to the Prime Minister, described the project as a strategic move to position Baghdad as a regional hub for gold and jewellery manufacturing and trade. He emphasised Iraq's geographic location and artisanal heritage as key advantages that the project will leverage. The planned city will feature advanced gold-processing factories, design workshops, marketing centres, vocational training facilities, and gold-testing laboratories. Dr. Saleh said the initiative could generate thousands of jobs for young Iraqis and artisans, enabling the country to shift from being a consumer market to a centre of gold production and export. Seen as part of Iraq's broader economic diversification strategy, the City of Gold aims to reduce reliance on oil and foster the growth of the private sector, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises. It is also expected to support financial stability by creating alternative income streams grounded in local industry. TREC called on the Ministries of Education and Higher Education to align academic and vocational programmes with the technical needs of such transformative projects, equipping young Iraqis with the skills to succeed in the emerging labour market. German-Chinese Consortium Expand Baiji Power Station

By John Lee. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has officially launched the first phase of the second Baiji Gas Power Station in Salahuddin province, a project that will add up to 1,014 megawatts to Iraq's power grid. Speaking at the launch event on Saturday, Al-Sudani reiterated that energy is the cornerstone of Iraq's comprehensive development plans. He confirmed that the government has allocated financial resources to support the full energy value chain - production, transmission, and distribution - across the country. The project will be executed by a consortium of Siemens Energy (Germany) and China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC). The contract covers the rehabilitation of six Siemens gas turbine units, each with a capacity of 169 MW. Key components include: A load evacuation network of seven lines at 400 kV, linking six transmission lines to the national grid. A new 132 kV transmission system comprising 16 lines to serve Salahuddin province. The first two units are expected to be operational within 27 months, with subsequent units coming online at two-month intervals. (Sources: PMO, Ministry of Electricity)

UN Envoy on displaced Yazidis: This is not a life

Shafaq News – Duhok On Friday, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Mohamad Al Hassan, denounced the dire living conditions endured by the Yazidi internally displaced in Sharya camp, Duhok province. During his visit to the camp on the 11th anniversary of the ISIS attack on the Yazidi community in Sinjar, he described the situation as untenable: 'This is not a life. This is not stability. No Iraqi citizen or official can accept the continuation of this reality.' Al-Hassan appealed to relevant authorities to adopt a constructive approach toward improving conditions in displacement camps, emphasizing that the ultimate goal must be 'the dignified, voluntary, and safe return of IDPs to their homes in Sinjar district, Nineveh province.' The Yazidi community was among the hardest hit by ISIS atrocities in 2014. To this day, more than 200,000 Yazidis remain displaced, many residing in camps under inadequate living standards. Others have returned to their areas of origin, often without access to basic services or sustainable support systems. Additionally, approximately 2,600 Yazidis remain unaccounted for, years after the initial attacks.
