Local council finance director remanded over alleged abuse of power
MELAKA: A former local authority finance director in Melaka has been remanded for seven days over alleged abuse of power involving RM50 million in public funds for share investments.
The remand order against the 57-year-old man was issued by magistrate N. Sivashangari and is effective until June 23.
Earlier, the suspect, dressed in an orange lock-up uniform, arrived at the Ayer Keroh Court Complex at 9am, escorted by several Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers.
Yesterday, media reports stated that the suspect was arrested at 1pm while giving his statement at the MACC office in Melaka.
According to sources, the suspect allegedly committed the offence between 2020 and 2023 by appointing his wife, a bank employee, as the investment agent for the RM50 million in share investments.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is believed to have used public and trust funds without the approval of the financial controlling officer.
State MACC director Adi Supian Shafie, when contacted, confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.

On May 14, the teen's 35-year-old father also pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 33(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 for permitting his son to drive without proper supervision. He was fined RM15,000, in default 12 months imprisonment and ordered to perform 100 hours of community service within six months. On Jan 14, the teenager lost control of the vehicle he was driving and crashed into two cars and two motorcycles along Jalan Stutong Baru. Four victims died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Sarawak General Hospital.

He is believed to have committed the offence between 2020 and 2023 by appointing his wife, who works at a bank, as the investment agent for share investments amounting to nearly RM50 million. Bernama reported a source as saying that a preliminary investigation suggested that the suspect may have used public and trust funds without the necessary approval. According to the source, the man, in his 50s, was detained at about 1pm today when he provided a statement at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office in Melaka. Melaka MACC director Adi Supian Shafie confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009. He said the suspect would be brought to the Ayer Keroh magistrates' court in Melaka tomorrow to be remanded.

Meor Azizi Zolkfle, 33, made the plea when the charges were read out before Judge Hayda Farizal Abu Hasan. The accused, as a person in a position of trust, namely, a coach to a 13-year-and-five-month-old trainee, was charged with two counts of committing physical sexual assault on the teenager. The offences were allegedly committed at the Bandar Penawar Stadium at 9.20 pm on May 2. In a separate charge, the accused was alleged to have committed physical sexual assault on another trainee, aged 13 years and seven months, at a sports centre shop in Felda Sening at 8 pm on Nov 14. He also faces a charge of committing the same offence against the same victim at the Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Adela field here at 7.50 pm on May 2. The charges were framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, read together with Section 16(1) of the same Act. Section 14(a) carries a maximum sentence of 20 years' imprisonment and whipping, while Section 16(1) provides for an additional jail term of up to five years and not less than two strokes of the cane.
