Appointment of Labuan Corporation chairman in final stages, says Dr Zaliha
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories), Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, said the matter is in its final stages and will be announced soon.
"We are reviewing qualified candidates and, most importantly, ensuring the next chairman truly understands Labuan's current needs and is capable of driving sustainable economic growth.
"We are not deliberately delaying the appointment, and there's no need to rush to make a decision, as it is not just about simply filling the post — we must look at the merit of the (future) chairman.
"Just a little more patience, as it is already in the final stage. We will make an official announcement on the matter," she said during the Minister's Question Time (MQT) session in the Dewan Rakyat today.
She was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Siti Aminah Aching (BN–Beaufort), who asked about the reasons behind the delay in appointing the Labuan Corporation chairman.
Previously, Dr Zaliha dismissed rumours that Tuaran Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau, had been appointed as the new chairman of Labuan Corporation.
She said the federal government, through the Department of Federal Territories, is still in the process of evaluating several qualified candidates for the leadership role.
The post of Labuan Corporation chairman became vacant following former Kimanis MP Tan Sri Anifah Aman concluding his term last month.
Meanwhile, regarding the proposal to make the Labuan International Sea Sports Complex the permanent venue for the Borneo Flora Festival, Dr Zaliha said: "The government is of the view that further assessment is still needed to evaluate its long-term suitability in terms of logistics, accessibility and infrastructure sustainability.
"For example, the Royal Floria Putrajaya only designated Precinct 4 as its permanent location after seven years of organisation, having taken into account various success factors and challenges.
"Given that the Borneo Flora Festival is proposed as a biennial event, the decision on a permanent venue should be made after several editions to ensure it truly meets the requirements for hosting large-scale events on a continuous basis."

‘Miniature of Malaysia': KLScouts tapped to strengthen unity in diverse capital
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 — The Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Scouts Movement (KLScouts) has the potential to become an important strategic partner in strengthening the city's social ecosystem, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa. She said that the extensive network and experience of the Scouts Association of Malaysia (PPM) can be systematically utilised to implement social intervention policies in the capital, especially through programs like the Human Endeavour Program (PUJI). She noted that KLScouts' membership has reached over 14,000 people, making it a crucial asset in facing urban social challenges. 'These challenges include character building, instilling a spirit of service, and teaching people the meaning of leadership through action,' she said while speaking at the Kuala Lumpur Scouts Association of Malaysia Medal and King's Scout Badge Award Ceremony here last night. Dr Zaliha said that platforms like KLScouts enable a more effective connection between community movements and national policies, particularly in addressing the challenge of unity in the capital. 'Kuala Lumpur is a real testing ground for the unity and solidarity of the people. It is a miniature of Malaysia, where the complexities of religion, race, and culture coexist in the same city, with a diversity full of challenges and opportunities,' she said. Furthermore, Dr Zaliha said that scouting activities are not just ordinary co-curricular activities but are an important process in the holistic formation of an individual's identity. She also expressed hope that KLScouts can play a greater role in the holistic urban social development policy through collaboration with various parties. 'I hope that the cooperation built tonight will pave the way for a more strategic involvement of KLScouts in the policies and implementation of social development in this capital,' she said. In the ceremony, 43 people received the King's Scout Certificate, six individuals received the Scouts Association of Malaysia Medal, 79 received the Chief Scout Commissioner's Certificate of Commendation, and 100 individuals received the Wangsa Wilayah Certificate. The event also saw the official launch of the 40th Anniversary Commemorative Medal of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur Scout Council, symbolising the organisation's four decades of establishment. — Bernama

Selangor water tariffs to rise from Sept 1, no changes for low-use domestic users, new rate introduced for data centres
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 1 — The Selangor government today confirmed that new water tariffs for users in the peninsula and Labuan will take effect from September 1, following Cabinet's approval of a review aimed at improving treated water services for both consumers and industry. In a statement tonight, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the revision — led by the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) — includes a newly introduced tariff category for data centres, which will now be charged RM5.31 per cubic metre due to their high water usage for cooling systems. For domestic households, there will be no change in tariffs for those consuming up to 20 cubic metres (m³), with the rate remaining at RM0.65/m³ and a minimum charge of RM6.50. However, rates will increase progressively for higher usage brackets. Households using between 20m³ and 35m³ will see an increase of RM0.30/m³ to RM1.62/m³, while those exceeding 35m³ will pay RM3.51/m³ — up RM0.88/m³ — for each additional cubic metre. 'For residents of low-cost homes, the increase will be minimal — just RM0.10/m³, bringing the new rate to RM1.18/m³, to minimise the cost of living impact, ' Amirudin said. Tariffs for condominiums and government quarters will also be revised, with the minimum charge for flats remaining at RM173/month, while estates and government quarters will pay RM20.90/month. For commercial and non-domestic users, the new rate will match the highest domestic tier at RM3.51/m³, with those consuming above 35m³ facing a further increase to RM3.83/m³. Places of worship and welfare institutions will continue to enjoy the lowest rate, with a marginal increase to RM0.76/m³. Amirudin also announced that the Selangor government would absorb the annual RM100,000 cost increase for places of worship and welfare institutions and expand its free water scheme to cover more lower-income households. 'More than 1.3 million Selangorians will continue receiving 20m³ of water for free monthly through the Darul Ehsan Water Scheme (SADE). The qualifying monthly household income threshold will be raised from RM5,000 to RM6,000 to reach more people, ' he said. To apply for the scheme, eligible residents can visit Air Selangor's official site beginning August 8. The state government will allocate RM52.7 million annually to support this initiative, Amirudin added, saying it reflects Selangor's commitment to balancing affordability with sustainable infrastructure investment. Among key improvements cited were the replacement of over 730km of old pipes since 2018, a reduction in non-revenue water losses from 27.7 per cent to 27.3 per cent, and a rise in reserve margins to 16.74 per cent as of June 2025. Selangor also plans to accelerate its pipe replacement rate to 300km per year and build two new water treatment plants — Rasau and Labohan Dagang 2 — at a combined cost of over RM8 billion, which will add 2,730 million litres per day to supply. 'These steps are crucial as the state targets a 20 per cent water reserve margin by 2030, ' said Amirudin.

New PKR appointees ‘on same page' as leadership, says analyst
(from left) Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Shamsul Iskandar Akin were appointed as the heads of the Johor and Melaka chapters of PKR, while Sim Tze Tzin was made the party's new strategic director. PETALING JAYA : An analyst says the appointment of PKR's new strategic director and several state chiefs is aimed at facilitating the party's workflow, as they are more aligned with the top leadership. Mazlan Ali of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia cited the appointments of PKR strategic director Sim Tze Tzin, replacing Akmal Nasir, as well as Dr Zaliha Mustafa as Johor PKR chief, taking over from Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh. Akmal and Syed Ibrahim were running mates with Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli in the PKR elections in May, which saw Rafizi losing the party's deputy presidency. 'Syed Ibrahim also attended Rafizi's press conference on the judicial appointments issue. 'So this new line-up of leaders could be said to be more on the same page with the top leadership of the party,' Mazlan told FMT. Other appointments announced yesterday included Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's senior political secretary, Shamsul Iskandar Akin, as Melaka PKR chief, and Ahmad Farhan Fauzi, another political aide to Anwar, taking over as Pahang PKR head. Tawfik Yaakub of Universiti Malaya said the changes were a normal matter for any party after undergoing internal elections. He said such steps were necessary to revamp and strengthen the party, especially ahead of a series of elections, starting with the Sabah polls this year and eventually the 16th general election in several years' time. Also due in the coming years are the Sarawak, Melaka, and Johor state elections. Tawfik said Sim's appointment could help PKR formulate holistic strategies for the polls, not only focusing on Malay support but also giving non-Malay leaders a bigger role. He added that Shamsul and Farhan's appointments were unsurprising given their government positions. 'This can ease communications from the PKR president (Anwar) to the state chiefs,' he said.
