WRC leader Evans third as Toyota dominate Canaries
World Rally Championship (WRC) leader Evans finished one minute and 17 seconds behind winner Kalle Rovanpera with fellow team-mate Sebastien Ogier second.
Rovanpera, the 2022 and 2023 WRC champion, won 15 of the rally's 18 stages and collected a maximum 35 points to jump from sixth place overall up to second.
Evans and co-driver Scott Martin picked up 21 points for the weekend and have extended their championship lead from 36 points to 43.
Despite that, the 36-year-old Welshman - who had won the previous two rallies in Kenya and Sweden - was left frustrated to record his lowest finish of the season so far.
"When you aren't in a position to fight for the win, in equal machinery, it never feels great," said Evans.
Belgian Thierry Neuville struggled for grip along with the other Hyundai drivers - finishing well off the pace in seventh and losing second place overall to Rovanpera who took his first victory for seven months.
"It has not been the best start of the season but we are definitely, in this kind of condition, back now," said the 24-year-old Finnish driver.
Toyota had been on course for a record-equalling 1-2-3-4-5 finish before Sami Pajari crashed out on Saturday's penultimate stage promoting team-mate Takamoto Katsuta and his Irish co-driver Aaron Johnston to fourth.
Northern Ireland's Josh McErlean crashed out on the final day's opening test, running wide and crashing into the barriers on a right-handed corner.
The Ford Puma driver was forced to retire on the spot from 10th place but remains 12th in the overall standings.
Round five of the 14-event series is Rally de Portugal from 15-18 May.

Pony AI shares jump premarket as second-quarter revenue tops estimates
- Pony AI (NASDAQ:PONY) has reported a surge in second-quarter revenue, topping estimates, as the Chinese robotaxi operator said it was on track to reach its year-end vehicle output target. It added that the company's presence in Dubai, South Korea and Luxembourgh was also expanded. Robotaxi services revenues spiked by 157.8% year-over-year to $1.5 million, with the group saying it is continuing to optimize its pricing and operation strategies across its user bases. Its robotruck segment, meanwhile, brought in sales of $9.5 million, falling by 9.9% due to a push to focus on "high-margin" revenues. "As we enter the second half of this pivotal year of mass production, we are driving strongly toward positive unit economics and accelerating our multi-year growth trajectory,' Peng said. Overseas sales increased by 0.5% to 278,567 units in July from 277,285 units a year earlier, while year-to-date volumes were down slightly to 1,990,092 from 1,995,695 units, underpinned by strong sales in North America. The company's new EV plant in the US state of Georgia became operational last October, producing the Ioniq 5, followed by the Ioniq 9 earlier this year. A Kia model is also set to go into production in 2026. The automaker said it will expand capacity at the plant to 500,000 units per year later in the decade from 300,000 at present. Earlier this year Hyundai set a target of 4,174,000 global vehicle sales for 2025, including its Genesis luxury brand, representing a slight increase over 2024 volumes. In the first seven months of the year, Kia's global sales rose by 1.8% to 1,850,241 units from 1,817,495 a year earlier. Domestic sales declined by 2.2% to 45,017 units last month from 46,010 units a year earlier, with the Carnival MPV being its best-selling model with 7,211 domestic deliveries, followed by the Sorento with 7,053 sales and the Sportage with 5,424 units. Domestic sales in the first seven months of the year increased slightly to 321,440 units from 321,250 a year earlier. The company sold a further 2,597 special purpose vehicles (SPVs) in this period, down from 2,655 a year earlier, most of which were military vehicles delivered domestically.
