ENDWELL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Your winner of this week's News34 Sports Athlete of the Week is Cooper Klinger.
The Spartans' baseball standout would record an RBI in both sectional finals games against Owego, which allowed the team to win them both in nail-biting fashion, 2-1 and 4-3. Since then, he has also helped M-E reach a final four appearance as they chase back-to-back state championships, having topped Section VII's Peru 7-4 in a game where he had a hit, run, and RBI.
Congratulations to Cooper on being News34 Sports' Athlete of the Week.

Detroit sports radio host outlines 3 goals for Michigan State football this season

One of the biggest sports personalities in the state has outlined his expectations for Michigan State football this year, with a simple question of whether or not they are unreasonable or not. Mike Valenti of 97.1 The Ticket in Detroit provided his expectations and goals for the Spartans this upcoming season, and wants the fans to weigh in on whether or not he's being reasonable. Here are the outlined expectations Valenti provided during a show earlier this week: Seems pretty reasonable to me -- the bigger question is whether or not the Spartans can get that done. Valenti is a Spartans alum and has been known for holding Michigan State to high standards. This list of expectations seems about right, in my opinion, and something I believe they can achieve this fall. In my preseason predictions, I have Michigan State going 7-5 with notable wins over Indiana and Michigan that would qualify as the significant victory Valenti is calling for. I also believe their offense will be "fun again" as he said during his show -- so for me, Michigan State nearly checks all of those boxes in my personal outlook for the season. Popular power ratings system has MSU as one of most improved teams in country

One of the most popular power rating systems anticipates Michigan State to be one of the most improved teams in all of college football this season. Kelley Ford -- who is behind the popular KFord Ratings -- has released a number of his preseason ratings and rankings for the upcoming season -- one of which is a breakdown of his most improved teams. Ford included a complete breakdown of the teams that experienced the biggest jumps and declines from their ratings at the end of last season to the start of this season, and the Spartans were considered one of the teams with the highest improvement. Per Ford's rating system, Michigan State has the No. 4 highest improvement of all 136 teams in college football and the highest mark of any Big Ten team. The Spartans have a 7.0 points per game upgrade in Ford's rating system, which is only behind Southern Miss (12.7 points), Florida State (9.1 points) and Tulsa (7.6 points). The full graphic and rankings from Ford can be seen in the post below: Ultimately, this rating is suggesting Michigan State to be 7.0 points better per game compared to last year's team. That would mean, in theory, that if Michigan State was a seven point underdog in a game last year, they would then be even against that same team this year. That's a pretty notable upgrade and improvement from one year to the next. Michigan State is set to kick off the 2025 season on August 29 against Western Michigan -- who is expected to be slightly worse than last year's team with a downgrade of 2.3 points per game. Kickoff from Spartan Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET, with the game set to be televised on FS1. Texas A&M will host elite 2026 4-star SF in early September

With new head basketball coach Bucky McMillan now at the helm, Texas A&M's recruiting efforts have increased significantly this summer concerning the 2026 cycle. So far, four-star small forward Bryson Howard and four-star shooting guard Dakari Spear are two players to watch, as Howard will visit College Station at the end of the month, while Spear placed the Aggies in his top 5 program list. On Sunday, it was revealed that another elite 2026 prospect, four-star small forward Ralph Scott out of the prestigious IMG Academy, will reportedly visit Texas A&M in an official capacity on September 5, followed by OVs to Tennessee and LSU. While the Aggies have yet to land a 2026 prospect, McMillan's success in landing 13 players from the transfer portal, which now includes former Southern Illinois star guard Ali Dibba, is built around relationships, similar to Texas A&M football head coach Mike Elko's recruiting efforts. On the court, Scott possesses an inside and outside game with the size and length to rebound at a high level, but, most importantly, he is an elite athlete who will likely lead a team in scoring at the next level. Scott will also take an official visit to Houston at the end of the month, which is likely Texas A&M's biggest competition outside to Tennessee. According to 247Sports, Scott is currently positioned as the 44th-ranked prospect in the class, the 18th-ranked small forward, and the 8th-ranked prospect in Florida.
