Hibs and Dundee United find out potential Conference League opponents

STV News2 days ago
The draw for the third qualifying round of the Conference League has taken place as Hibernian and Dundee United find out their potential opponents.
Hibs start off in the Europa League where they will take on FC Midtjylland in a two-legged tie over the next fortnight.
If David Gray's men get through that, they will play Fredrikstad for a place in the play-off round of the second-tier competition.
But if they get knocked out, then they will drop into the Conference League qualifiers to take on either Olexandriya, from Ukraine, or Serbian side Partizan Belgrade.
Dundee United start in the third tier, where they will take on UNA Strassen in the second qualifying round.
If they get past the Luxembourg club, they will set up a third-round qualifying clash with either Decic, from Montenegro, or Austrian side Rapid Vienna.
The Champions League and Europa League draws took place earlier on Monday.
If Rangers get past Panathinaikos then they will play either Servette, from Switzerland, or Czech side Viktoria Plzen in the next round of qualifying in the top competition.
But if they drop into the Europa League they will take on Besiktas or Shakhtar Donetsk.
Any team that gets past the third-round qualifiers will reach the play-off stage of that respective competition, and will be joined by Celtic (Champions League) and Aberdeen (Europa League).
The Hoops and the Dons are the only two Scottish sides guaranteed League Phase football, as even in the worst-case scenario of them losing their play-offs, they will drop into the Europa League and Conference League, respectively.

Forward Ekitike joins Liverpool from Frankfurt

July 23 (Reuters) - Liverpool have signed French striker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt, the Premier League side announced on Wednesday, with media reports saying the deal was worth 69 million pounds ($93.65 million) plus add-ons. Ekitike is Liverpool's second-most expensive recruit in the close season after the Premier League champions signed Germany midfielder Florian Wirtz, who can also play as winger or forward, in June for a club-record 100 million pounds plus add-ons. "The 23-year-old has successfully completed a medical and agreed personal terms with the Reds, allowing him to fly out to Hong Kong to join his new teammates on their pre-season tour of Asia later this week," Liverpool said in a statement. Former Paris St Germain player Ekitike had a breakout campaign in 2024-25, scoring 15 Bundesliga goals in 33 appearances. He also struck four times as Frankfurt reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League. Ekitike, who made his senior debut at Stade de Reims, joined PSG on loan in 2022, making 25 Ligue 1 appearances as they won the French top-flight. He went on loan to Frankfurt in 2023, before making the move permanent a year later. "It's a strong story for him and Eintracht Frankfurt that he's moving to one of Europe's top teams with the greatest ambitions and opportunities," Frankfurt Sporting Director Markus Kroesche said in a statement. "Hugo has earned this move, and it shows that we are capable of offering players a great prospect." Liverpool begin their Premier League title defence at home against Bournemouth on August 15. Marcus Rashford completes loan move to Barcelona

The 27-year-old academy product has not added to his 426 first-team appearances for the Red Devils since being hauled off in a Europa League match away to Viktoria Plzen on December 12. Rashford ended last season on loan at Aston Villa and is among five wantaway players that have been training away from Ruben Amorim's first-team squad since pre-season began, as they explored their options in the transfer market. The England international has now wrapped up the move he had hoped for, joining Barcelona on loan for the 2025/26 season. 'I'm very excited,' Rashford told Barcelona club media. 'I think it's a club where people's dreams come true and they win big prizes. And what the club stands for really means a lot to me as well. It feels like home and this is a big factor in my choice to come here. 'For me it's a family club and people are comfortable here, it's a good place for good players to showcase their skills.' Rashford added that he had enjoyed watching Barcelona since a young age and that he was attracted by coach Hansi Flick's desire to build on a season in which they won LaLiga, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Supercup. 'I'm definitely full of excitement and I'm just hungry to go out there and help this team win,' he said. 'They won so much last year year and I can see the ambition of the club is to do even better, and as a player that's what you want. Our new number 14: Marcus Rashford 💙❤️ — FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona) July 23, 2025 'It keeps you improving year on year and that's what you need to be the best version of yourself. I'm excited to be here and I'm eager to get going.' The LaLiga champions confirmed that they have an option to make the deal permanent. That clause is reported to be 35million euros (£30.3million) and PA understands the deal sees Barcelona cover Rashford's wages for the campaign. The Premier League club said: 'Everyone at Manchester United wishes Marcus good luck for the season.' Rashford completed the relevant paperwork on Wednesday and is set to wear the number 14 with the Blaugrana. The forward landed in Catalonia on Sunday evening to tie up a deal that the player hope can kickstart his career and boost his hopes of going to next summer's World Cup with England. Rashford departs 23rd in United's all-time appearance list and as their 15th-highest scorer with 138 goals, having notched a brace on his February 2016 debut against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League. He won five major trophies with his boyhood club and was crowned their player of the year in 2022-23 after scoring a career-high 30 goals, which saw him rewarded with a reported £325,000-a-week deal until 2028. 🗞️ Marcus Rashford has joined Barcelona on a season-long loan. Best of luck, Marcus 👊 — Manchester United (@ManUtd) July 23, 2025 Rashford has registered 17 goals in 62 England appearances and been to four major tournaments with his country. The forward missed his penalty in the European Championship final shootout defeat to Italy in 2021. As Rashford heads to start a new chapter in Spain, work continues at Old Trafford to offload Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia. The quartet have not travelled on United's pre-season tour of the United States.

Marcus Rashford says Barcelona ‘feels like home' after completing loan move

Barca's agreement includes an option to make the deal permanent. That clause is reported to be 35million euros (£30.3million) and PA understands the deal sees Barcelona cover Rashford's wages for the campaign. 'I want to win the biggest trophies and feel like Barcelona is a huge club in the football world so it is the perfect place,' Rashford said in a press conference. 'You see with the team last season, they have a young ambitious team and I want to add my qualities, my personality, improve the team and help them win… '(It was) not difficult. I was clear on my preference from the beginning. Actually from maybe in January. It didn't work out in January so I went to Aston Villa and enjoyed a good period there. I'm very grateful for the opportunity to play there. 'The summer came around very quickly, it was time to make another decision. My choice was easy. It's a family club, something I'm used to from my past. 'It feels like home. I feel I made the right decision. I'm excited to get going and eager to play the first game in front of the fans.' I don't have anything bad to say about Manchester United as it has been an important part not only in my career but my life. 'I was grateful for the opportunity to play for them. But football is like life – not everything goes as simply as you thought and this is my next chapter. I'm fully focused on this and trying to improve myself and helping the team win trophies. 'I don't have anything bad to say about United. I wish them all the best and hope they are successful in the future.' 🗞️ Marcus Rashford has joined Barcelona on a season-long loan.
