Hollywoodbets Durban July at Greyville Racecourse turned into a full-blown celebration of South African identity, not just through the horses and the high-profile guests, but most impressively, through fashion.
While A-listers arrived in style, it was the everyday punters who truly stole the show.
This year's theme, Marvels of Mzansi, gave everyone, from seasoned stylists to self-taught fashionistas, a chance to interpret what makes South Africa spectacular.

The result? A visual feast of bold prints, vibrant colours, cultural textures, and imaginative headpieces that transformed the racecourse into a living gallery of African pride.

Fans capture the nation's spirit
While celebrities like Kwesta and wife Yolanda, DJ Lamiez, Jojo Robinson, Thando Thabethe, and crowd-favourite Mahoo brought glitz and glam, it was the creatively dressed fans in the stands who captured the nation's spirit.

One standout attendee paired a modern Xhosa-inspired dress with recycled bottle caps from local soft drink brands, cleverly sewn into a corset-style bodice.
Another wore a shweshwe suit adorned with feathers and beaded armbands, merging tradition with a touch of flamboyance.

Fashion Takes Centre Stage
The fashion competition on the main stage formed part of the Fashion Experience, an initiative powered by eThekwini in collaboration with the Hollywood Foundation.
Twenty-five young designers from across South Africa debuted collections that reflected the soul and style of the nation, ranging from township couture to modern tribal chic.

Some designers incorporated quirky elements, such as sewn-on glass bottles, plastic toy cows, and even vuvuzela accessories.
'This is about giving new designers a platform to shine and tell our stories,' said one of the event organisers. 'It's more than fashion—it's culture, it's commentary, it's celebration.'

United in Spirit—On and Off the Track
As the day unfolded, laughter, dance, and admiration filled the air, not just for the horses but for the people.

A particularly iconic moment came when a group of fans arrived in full Springbok regalia, just in time to cheer on the Boks as they faced Italy.
'The Springboks are a Marvel of Mzansi too,' said one attendee proudly waving a flag.
In the end, the 2025 Durban July wasn't just about celebrities or fashion statements—it was about the people, the pride, and the power of everyday South Africans reminding the world why Mzansi always shows up in style.

LOS ANGELES - Tributes continue to pour in for Australian actor Julian McMahon, known for his roles in television series "Charmed" and "Nip/Tuck", who has died in the United States from cancer at the age of 56. His wife, Kelly, announced his death Friday in a statement to the website Deadline. Born in Sydney in 1968, McMahon initially worked as a model before moving to acting in television, first in Australia and later in the United States. He made a name for himself playing Cole Turner, a demon in the fantasy television series "Charmed", which ran from 2000 to 2005. "I'm heartbroken," series co-star Alyssa Milano wrote on Instagram after he died in Florida. "Losing him feels unreal. Too soon. Too unfair. Rest, my friend. I'll carry your laugh with me," she added. McMahon was nominated for an Emmy in 2005 for "Nip/Tuck" (2003-2010), another hit US series, in which he played an unscrupulous plastic surgeon. Producers Warner Bros. Television released a brief statement on Facebook paying tribute to his work on the series. McMahon also appeared in a number of films, playing villain Doctor Doom in two films from the Fantastic Four superhero franchise. More recently, he appeared alongside Nicolas Cage in "The Surfer", presented at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.

Recipes for a happy life
Professional chefs, like Reuben Riffel who is on our cover, spend their entire lives guring out how to coax new flavours from familiar ingredients. Durban July red carpet: RHOD stars show off high-fashion looks
The stars of the Real Housewives of Durban (RHOD) showed up and showed off at the 2025 Durban July. The popular Showmax reality series has wrapped up season five with an exciting and eventful reunion. This year, the theme of the Durban July was 'Marvels of Mzansi'. For many, this was interpreted as things that represent South Africa, from animals and flowers to landmarks and icons. A fashion directive from the event read, 'With majestic mountains and magnificent views, these natural wonders can be your muse.' On Saturday, 5 July, thousands of revellers descended on the Greyville Racecourse for the Hollywoodbets Durban July. Joining them were a number of Real Housewives from the city. While the three ladies behind much of the drama – Nonku Williams, Londie London, and Minnie Ntuli were MIA again – others put their best fashion foot forward. Sorisha Naidoo The reality TV show veteran channeled a Xhosa queen in an ensemble featuring woven straw and beaded bodice. Jojo Robinson The flamboyant RHOD star wore a lace and leopard print gown, showing off much of her tattooed body. Ayanda and Andile Season five newcomers Ayanda and Andile wore gold gowns, which, sadly, was not a hit if public commentary was anything to go by.
