Egypt launches Universal Health Insurance System in Aswan - Health

Al-Ahram Weekly01-07-2025
Egypt's Universal Health Insurance System (UHIS) has officially launched in Aswan, marking the final governorate in the first phase of the nationwide programme, according to the Egyptian Healthcare Authority (EHA).
Aswan is the sixth governorate to join the UHIS and the second in Upper Egypt after Luxor. The multi-phase programme began in 2018 in Port Said and has since expanded to Ismailia, South Sinai, Suez, and Luxor.
EHA Chairman Ahmed El-Sobky stated that during the trial phase, which commenced in late 2023, the system in Aswan provided 2.8 million medical and therapeutic services. These ranged from comprehensive medical exams and diagnostics to advanced treatments and major surgeries.
According to El-Sobky, the services included more than one million medical and laboratory tests, 400,000 emergency services, 100,000 outpatient visits, and 20,000 surgeries, with over 45 percent classified as primary, advanced, skilled, or specialised procedures.
Intensive care, neonatal services, and other forms of advanced care were also provided.
The services were delivered through eight hospitals and 89 family medicine centres and units affiliated with the EHA.
El-Sobky stated that investments in the UHIS in Aswan have exceeded EGP 12 billion, encompassing infrastructure, medical equipment, and digital transformation initiatives. He described the system's launch as a step towards 'health justice' and improving public health outcomes.
The first phase of the UHIS, which focused on upgrading medical infrastructure, has cost more than EGP 51 billion.
The second phase, expected to begin later this year, will extend coverage to Damietta, Marsa Matrouh, Kafr El-Sheikh, North Sinai, and Minya, with an estimated cost of EGP 115 billion, according to Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly.
Originally slated for completion by 2032, the UHIS will be rolled out nationwide by 2027 under presidential directives.

State-owned Holdipharma targets EGP 18bn in revenues for FY2025/2026

Mohamed El-Shimy, Minister of Public Enterprises, affirmed that the pharmaceutical industry is a vital pillar of health security and a key driver of the national economy, stressing that its development within the ministry's affiliated companies is a strategic priority. His remarks came while chairing the General Assembly meeting of the Holding Company for Pharmaceuticals (Holdipharma) to approve the budget plan for the 2025/2026 fiscal year. During the meeting, Ashraf El-Khouly, CEO and Managing Director of Holdipharma, presented the board's report, which included the draft budget for the coming fiscal year. The plan targets consolidated revenues of EGP 18bn, a 131% increase compared to 2023/2024, and net profits of EGP 3.4bn—up 343%. The report also noted the growth in the market value of the group's listed companies. The meeting, attended by Board Chair Ahmed Hegazy, members of the General Assembly, and representatives of the Central Auditing Organisation, marked the final approval of all holding companies' and subsidiaries' budgets for the new fiscal year. Minister El-Shimy explained that the ministry is working to localise and deepen pharmaceutical manufacturing, transfer and apply the latest global production technologies, and enhance product quality to strengthen competitiveness in local, regional, and international markets. Development plans include upgrading production lines, increasing manufacturing capacity, adhering to the highest standards of sustainability, quality, and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), ensuring occupational health and safety, and optimising the use of assets, capacities, and resources. He added that human capital development is central to achieving these targets, through specialised training and qualification programmes that encourage innovation and advance scientific research, alongside fostering partnerships with the private sector both domestically and internationally. These measures aim to increase production and export capacity, and open new markets to bolster the competitiveness of the national industry. El-Shimy stressed that reforming the financial structures of subsidiary companies is a top priority to ensure sustainable profitability and secure the resources needed for production expansion. He underscored the importance of updating organisational structures and management systems to meet current needs, while accelerating the implementation of the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system to improve operational efficiency and ensure precise oversight of resources and production. The presentation also highlighted major projects and investment opportunities, including the production of biological drugs, insulin and biosimilars, dry powder inhalation tablets, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), and hormones. It outlined partnerships with leading international companies, such as US-based Dawah, to produce and export products including ampoules, nutritional supplements, sterile injections, and sterile ophthalmic preparations. El-Shimy concluded by stressing the integration of economic, social, and environmental dimensions to ensure comprehensive sustainability in the company's activities. He called for promoting professional conduct, improving the work environment, and raising performance standards across all administrative and executive levels. He affirmed that the Ministry of Public Enterprises Sector is moving decisively towards modernising and restructuring its subsidiaries, striking a balance between profitability and sustainability, and enhancing Egypt's competitiveness regionally and globally. Holdipharma, he added, aims to achieve regional leadership in the sector, positioning Egypt as an advanced hub for pharmaceutical production and exports, meeting domestic needs while expanding into international markets.

Spain evacuates 44 wounded or ill children from Gaza - War on Gaza

Spain has evacuated 44 wounded or ill children from war-torn Gaza along with about 100 of their relatives over the past several months, the government said Tuesday. Four separate evacuation missions were carried out in coordination with international organisations and allied nations, Spain's migration ministry, which led the operations, said in a statement. The children and their families have been relocated across Spain to receive medical treatment, it added. Those brought to Spain will be eligible to apply for asylum. Migration Minister Elma Saiz said the operations demonstrated that "solidarity and international cooperation save lives". Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's government has been among the most vocal critics in the European Union of Israel's ongoing military campaign in Gaza. Since 7 October 2023, Israel's genocidal war in Gaza has killed at least 61,499 people, most of them women and children, with more than 153,575 others wounded, according to the Palestinian health ministry. Your Skin in Summer: Common Problems and Effective Solutions

Pasant Elzaitony With soaring temperatures and longer hours under the sun, your skin faces unique challenges during the summer months. Excessive sweating, high humidity, and strong UV rays can affect its glow and health, making proper care essential. 1. Sunburn and Skin Darkening Extended sun exposure increases melanin production, leading to tanning, dark spots, and sometimes painful sunburn. Treatment & Prevention: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 50, reapplying every two hours. Wear wide-brimmed hats and UV-protective sunglasses. Soothe burns with aloe vera gel or cool compresses. 2. Skin Dryness and Dehydration Hot weather can strip the skin of its natural moisture, causing dryness and flakiness. Treatment & Prevention: Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Use hydrating creams rich in hyaluronic acid or glycerin. Opt for gentle cleansers instead of harsh soaps. 3. Acne and Breakouts Sweat, excess oil, and clogged pores often trigger acne flare-ups in summer. Treatment & Prevention: Wash your face twice daily with a cleanser designed for oily or combination skin. Use products containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Avoid touching or squeezing pimples to prevent scarring. 4. Pigmentation and Melasma Sun exposure can worsen pigmentation, especially in sensitive skin. Treatment & Prevention: Apply sunscreen with antioxidants like Vitamin C. Use brightening creams containing niacinamide or arbutin. Consider professional treatments such as laser or chemical peels for severe cases. 5. Skin Irritation and Rashes Sweating and friction from clothing can lead to rashes or redness. Treatment & Prevention: Wear loose, breathable cotton clothing. Apply baby powder or soothing creams with panthenol. Avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours (10 AM to 4 PM). Bottom Line: Summer is a season of fun, but it can be tough on your skin. Consistent care and smart protection are the keys to maintaining a healthy, radiant complexion all season long. read more 15 Ludicrous Cosplay Costumes That Will Blow You Away Watch...
