‘Minority rights are not charity, they are fundamental': Owaisi, Rijiju spar over minority benefits
The Hyderabad MP, in a post on 'X', said, "You are a Minister of the Indian Republic, not a monarch.@KirenRijiju You hold a constitutional post, not a throne.Minority rights are fundamental rights, not charity."
"India's minorities are not even second-class citizens anymore. We are hostages," Owaisi alleged. The AIMIM chief attacked Rijiju on the Waqf (Amendment) Act, and asked can Muslims be members of Hindu Endowment Boards? "No. But your Waqf Amendment Act forces non-Muslims onto Waqf Boards and allows them to form a majority."
He further said the BJP-led central government "discontinued" the Maulana Azad National Fellowship, "defunded" the pre-matric scholarship and limited the post-matric and merit-cum-means scholarships.
"All because they benefited Muslim students," he said.
Owaisi said Muslims are now the only group whose numbers have fallen in higher education and their presence in the informal economy has gone up.
"They have been among the worst-hit by your government's economic policies," he alleged.
Muslim-concentrated areas are the ones most starved of public infrastructure and basic services, he claimed.
"We are not asking to be compared with other minorities of other countries. We are not asking for more than what the majority community gets. We are demanding what the Constitution promises: social, economic, and political justice," Owaisi said.

Advocates not employees of Bar Councils; complaints committee under PoSH Act not applicable: Bombay HC
The Bombay High Court on Monday observed that neither the Bar Council of India (BCI) nor Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa (BCMG) are employers of advocates. The court said that Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (PoSH Act) applies when employer-employee relationship exists. Therefore, provisions related to formation of Internal Complaints Committees (ICCs) are not applicable to advocates. 'However, the same would apply in so far as it pertains to employees of the BCI as well as BCMG,' the HC noted. It added that the women advocates can raise their grievances, including complaints of sexual harassment under Section 35 of the Advocates Act, 1961 which prescribes punishment for professional as well as other misconduct by lawyers. A bench of Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Sandeep V Marne disposed of PIL filed in 2017 by the UNS Women Legal Association, which sought formation of permanent grievance redressal mechanism to redress sexual harassment complaints against advocates. Senior advocate Milind Sathe representing BCMG stated that local committees have been formed under Section 6 of the PoSH Act across all districts led by District Magistrates or Collectors. Sathe also submitted that Section 35 of the 1961 law provides any person including woman advocate to lodge complaint before the state bar council for misconduct, including acts of sexual harassment. Advocate Shekhar Jagtap for BCI also submitted that it has formed panels under the law. 'It is evident that the provisions of the Act apply to a case of an employer which presupposes that there has to be an employer and employee relationship. Neither BCI nor BCMG is an employer of advocates. Therefore, the provisions of the 2013 Act do not apply in so far as it pertains to advocates,' the HC noted. 'However, the same would apply insofar as it pertains to employees of the BCI and BCMG. In view of aforesaid, no further orders are required to be passed in the PIL and the same is disposed of,' the court held.

Crores of workers will join July 9 strike, claim trade unions
About 30-40 crore workers and farmers will participate in the general strike on Wednesday (July 9, 2025), claimed leaders of 10 central trade unions in New Delhi on Monday (July 7, 2025) while addressing a joint press conference. The leaders said preparations for the strike were complete and workers had supported the 17-point charter of demands of the strike, called against the Union government's policies. 'The economic policies are resulting into more unemployment, rising price rise of essential commodities, depression in wages, cut in social sector spending in education, health, basic civic amenities, all this leading to more inequalities and miseries for the poor, lower income group and even middle classes. The government has abandoned the welfare state status of our country and is working in the interest of foreign and Indian corporates and it is so evident from its policies being pursued vigorously,' the trade union leaders said. In a statement, they said the trade unions had been fighting against the privatisation of public sector enterprises and public services, the policies of outsourcing, contractualisation and casualisation of workforce, against the anti-workers, pro-employer four Labour Codes meant to suppress and cripple the trade union movement, increase in working hours, to snatch their right to collective bargaining, right to strike, decriminalisation of violation of labour laws by employers, while criminalising the activities of trade unions etc. 'The government is making false claims on employment and provisions of social security. The existing social security schemes are being weakened and attempts to bring private players into it are pushed,' they said. They added that unions in the coal and minerals sectors, steel, banking and insurance sectors, power, petroleum and telecom industries and the transport sector have given notices for the strike. 'We are making continued efforts forging unity and solidarity between the two major productive forces of the country, the workers and farmers,' they said.

Later, they held a meeting at the residence of Ramesh Jarkiholi. Speaking to media, former minister Kumar Bangarappa said, "We came on the invitation of Ramesh Jarkiholi." When asked about the possibility of any change in the BJP state leadership, he cautiously responded, "We better wait," and declined to comment on whether political discussions took place during the gathering.
