Berhampur: Three hardcore Maoists, including two women, all from Chhattisgarh, carrying a total bounty of Rs 13 lakh, surrendered to police at Phulbani in Kandhamal district Monday.
The surrendered Maoists were identified as Made Beti alias Champa (30) of Dugumarka in Sukma district, working as divisional committee member (DCM), Raju Dodi alias Ajay (35) of Basaguda, and Admo Madvi alias Manju (27) of Pangud in Bijapur district, working as area committee members in Kalahandi-Kandhamal-Boudh-Nayagarh (KKBN) division of CPI (Maoist).
They surrendered at the district police office in Phulbani in the presence of inspector general of police (southern range) Niti Sekhar, SP (Kandhamal) Harish BC, and commandant 127 battalion of CRPF Pankaj Verma.
"The task of the surrendered Maoists was to reactivate the North-South corridor from Jharkhand to Chhattisgarh through south-central Odisha. They were working in the Maoist organisation since 2009, 2016, and 2011 respectively," said the SP (Kandhamal). The trio were involved in several Maoist-related violences in Kandhamal.
The surrender of senior Maoist leaders took place after the death of two Maoist leaders, Manku and Chandan, the ACM and party member in the Maoist organisation, in the June 30 encounter at Pushungia forest.

"Regular anti-Maoist operations in the interior areas of Kandhamal, the death of two ultras in the recent exchange of fire and frustration over unethical activities in the Maoist organisation, such as sexual harassment of female cadres, extortion through intimidation, and induction of youth into the organisation by false propaganda, are some of the reasons for the trio to quit the Maoists," said the SP.
They will be suitably rehabilitated under the surrender rehabilitation scheme of the govt, he said. Sekhar appealed to other ultras to shun violence and join the mainstream.

‘Sanna' biyyam-‘Pedda' publicity: Cong set to cash in on scheme for victory in local body polls
Hyderabad: Buoyedby the 'success' of sanna biyyam scheme, which touched 95% of the distribution for 3-months ration (June, July and August), the Congress party is making all out effort to encash it now. The scheme is being highlighted as part of a campaign for upcoming local body polls, even as the number of beneficiaries receiving ration in the state has reached 3.14 crore. According to party sources, despite the financial crunch faced during the implementation of six guarantees, the distribution of sanna biyyam has brought accolades to the present Congress government. The party leaders are planning to use this as a campaign to win a large number of sarpanches and MPPs in the elections. It is being predicted that the state government's bold decision to introduce the Sanna Biyyam scheme remains the most popular scheme to encash in the local body elections. While the state's share was Rs 5,175 crore annually during the supply of coarse rice, another Rs 3,000 crore of additional burden was incurred with Sanna Biyyam. In the first week of April, the Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy launched the Sanna Biyyam scheme in Huzurnagar constituency. Later, when the Center announced that the beneficiaries would be given rice for 3-months at a time, it further benefited the Congress government. The number of beneficiaries receiving ration in the state has reached 3.14 crore. In the previous government, there were only 2.84 crore beneficiaries, while there were 91 lakh cards. After the Congress government came to power, it immediately started accepting applications for new ration cards and selected the eligible. 10 lakh applications were received for new ration cards and 16 lakh applications for adding family members. With such a large number of beneficiaries, Congress leaders are calculating that if at least 70 percent of them support the Congress party in the local elections, this would ensure a win of 25 to 28 chairmen for 32 Zilla Parishads. The partymen are also campaigning against BRS, emphasising that the pink party has never been serious about the PDS and failed even to issue new ration cards during its ten years of rule. In contrast Congress government has accepted new applications and granting 2.50 lakh people new cards after assuming power. With the overwhelming response from the people, the ruling party leaders in the villages are highlighting the Sanna Biyyam scheme to the voters. As part of the campaign they are also promising that if the party wins the local body elections, the State government will introduce more welfare schemes.

'She sent a final message, then vanished': DU student Sneha Debnath's body found in Yamuna; friends recall months of struggle
NEW DELHI: The body of a 19 year-old DU student was recovered from the Yamuna by divers late Sunday, nearly a week after she is believed to have jumped off Signature Bridge in north Delhi. Sneha Debnath had sent text messages and mails to friends on July 7 morning, indicating she intended to end her life, and mentioned the bridge. Debnath's father, a retired Army officer, had turned to social media with emotional appeals for help and police action. The case spanned two states — Delhi and Tripura, from where family hails. An FIR was filed July 9, two days after she went missing and her phone was switched off. According to the FIR, Debnath told her mother around 5am on July 7 that she was going to drop a friend at Sarai Rohilla railway station. It was the cab driver who revealed that he had dropped Debnath at Signature Bridge. "A note provided by the family indicated her intention to jump from Signature Bridge. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? Some eyewitnesses said they saw a girl standing on the bridge, who was later missing," DCP (South) Ankit Chauhan said. The body was recovered from the river near Geeta Colony flyover, around 10km from the bridge. It is not clear why Debnath, a second-year BSc maths student at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, decided to take the drastic step and when she told her friends about it. Her family said she had taken only her phone with her as she left home on July 7. The family alleged police inaction and pointed out that not a single CCTV camera at Signature Bridge was functional. "The bridge reportedly has over 60 CCTV cameras, but not a single one was functional on July 7, aside from a speed-monitoring camera that only captures still images of fast-moving vehicles," Bipasha Debnath, Sneha's elder sister, told TOI. "My father is a retired officer who served in the Army for over 30 years. He's 53 now, battling chronic kidney failure and undergoing dialysis and yet, I saw him standing at the bridge, barely able to walk, asking strangers if they had seen his daughter." The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) conducted a search on July 9, which remained inconclusive until Sunday evening when her body was recovered. The family confirmed her identity.

France announces agreement to give New Caledonia more autonomy
'A bet on Trust': France annexed New Caledonia, a collection of Pacific islands with a population of about 270,000, in 1853 and populated it with white settlers. Indigenous Kanaks now make up about 40% of the population, while Europeans account for a quarter (NYT) France and New Caledonia announced an agreement Saturday that would give the semiautonomous Pacific territory more freedoms but stops short of granting it independence, more than a year after violent and deadly protests there against French rule. The agreement would create the "State of New Caledonia" within the French Republic, according to the 13-page document. The state would be enshrined in France's Constitution, and other nations would be allowed to recognize it. "A State of New Caledonia within the Republic: It's a bet on trust," President Emmanuel Macron of France said on social media. The agreement must be approved by both the French parliament and the people of New Caledonia, a collection of Pacific islands with a population of about 270,000. It concludes a tense negotiation involving the French government and the territory's pro- and anti-independence groups. Last year, there were protests and riots in New Caledonia over a proposed amendment to the French Constitution that some Indigenous Kanak people feared would dilute their voting power and hamper their aspiration for independence. Seven people died in the riots, many more were injured, and businesses suffered hundreds of millions of dollars in losses. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Đây có thể là thời điểm tốt nhất để giao dịch vàng trong 5 năm qua IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo France declared a state of emergency for the territory, which has large reserves of nickel and is a crucial foothold for France in a region where China is asserting its influence. Hundreds of armed French police officers were mobilized. Macron denounced the protests at the time as an "insurrection movement" and called on pro- and anti-independence groups to negotiate an agreement that would be submitted for approval by a popular referendum in New Caledonia. The agreement announced Saturday would create a New Caledonian nationality and allow for residents to hold dual French and New Caledonian nationality. French citizens who have lived in New Caledonia for 10 years would "acquire" New Caledonian nationality. That provision appears to be addressing the discontent that led to the 2024 riots: the French government's backing of a constitutional amendment that would give voting rights to some people who had moved to the territory after 1998. Voting had been put off for more than two decades after the French government agreed in the 1980s to hold an independence referendum, following armed conflict that claimed dozens of lives. Authorities also agreed to freeze the rolls so that new arrivals, who were thought to be more likely to support French rule, would not sway the vote. Tensions have simmered for decades in the territory over long-standing social inequality and the prospect of independence. France annexed New Caledonia in 1853 and populated it with white settlers. Indigenous Kanaks now make up about 40% of the population, while Europeans make up about a quarter. The territory held three independence referendums from 2018 to 2021; all were voted down. Discontent bubbled in 2021 when Macron insisted on holding the third referendum despite pleas from Kanak leaders to delay it because of the coronavirus pandemic. Many Kanak leaders called for a boycott of the vote and have since refused to accept the results, in which 97% of voters wanted the territory to stay in France but just 44% of the population voted. Previous referendums passed with higher voter turnout but smaller margins.
