PETALING JAYA: The future of national women's doubles pair Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) remains up in the air, but former coach Chan Chong Ming has urged the duo to think twice before parting ways with the national body.
Chong Ming, a former world No. 1 in the men's doubles, served as the head coach of the women's doubles squad in 2020 and was instrumental in guiding Pearly-Thinaah to their breakthrough title at the 2021 Swiss Open, their first on the BWF World Tour.
He feels the pair should not make a hasty decision to turn professional, as they could face significant challenges on their own particularly in terms of access to the sports science support system currently available at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara.
Chong Ming pointed out that a lack of specialised expertise in sports science is one of the biggest hurdles for independent players, especially with Pearly's long history of injuries.
'As coaches, we may have the technical and tactical knowledge of the game, but when it comes to strength and conditioning, our expertise is still limited,' said Choon Ming after the closing ceremony of the Daikin Badminton Championship in Kota Damansara yesterday.
'These areas should be handled by professionals like physiologists. We can manage many things, but for these specialised matters, we need expert support. I believe the Youth and Sports Ministry could also step in to assist.
For the record, Pearly suffered a left knee injury during the 2022 Japan Open, which forced her to be carried off the court in a wheelchair.
A year later, she also sustained a back injury while competing at the Hangzhou Asian Games in October.
Moreover, at the All-England Championships held last March, Pearly experienced a left ankle injury while attempting a drop shot but continued playing after receiving treatment.
Pearly-Thinaah's contract expired last December, and negotiations are still ongoing.
However, on BAM's side, deputy president Datuk V. Subramaniam has made it clear that they will not budge on the salary package already offered to the world No. 4 pair.

Pearly-Thinaah silence Istora fans by beating Lanny-Siti for quarters ticket
National women's doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah. — IZZRAFIQ ALIAS/The Star PETALING JAYA: Shuttlers Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah earned sweet redemption by beating Indonesia's Lanny Tria Mayasari-Siti Fadia Ramadhanti in the second round of the Indonesian Open in Jakarta on Thursday (June 5). The duo battled for 59 minutes before prevailing 18-21, 21-16, 21-17 at the Istora Senayan, overcoming not only the home duo but also the challenge of adjusting to the court conditions and a partisan crowd. It was a particularly satisfying win as Lanny-Siti had ousted fellow Malaysians Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing in the opening round the day before. Pearly-Thinaah will face the winners of the match between Malaysians Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting and Japan's sixth seeds Rin Iwanaga-Kie Nakanishi. Men's doubles pair Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun also booked their spot in the quarter-finals after coming through an all-Malaysian clash against Yap Roy King-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi. Despite being the seventh seeds and last year's finalists, Wei Chong-Kai Wun did not have it easy as Roy King-Wan Arif put up a fierce fight. Wei Chong-Kai Wun had to dig deep before sealing a 14-21, 21-11, 21-15 victory in a 50-minute battle. Awaiting them in the last eight on Friday are the winners of the tie between Denmark's Rasmus Kjaer-Frederik Sogaard and India's top pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty.

MACC seizes Ilham Tower again
Photo: AZMAN GHANI/The Star PETALING JAYA: The Deputy Public Prosecutor's office has given the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) the full legal authorisation to seize Ilham Tower again. MACC said it had since ordered the immediate seizure of the 60-storey skyscraper through its investigating officer after authorisation was given. It said that the seizure will be done under Section 51(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA) 2001. 'Through a notice of seizure of immovable property under the section on June 4, the authorisation for seizure was granted pursuant to the powers conferred upon the Public Prosecutor under Section 376(3) of the Criminal Procedure Code (Act 593). 'This means the Deputy Public Prosecutor is satisfied with the information provided by the MACC related to an offence under Section 4(1) of the AMLATFPUAA 2001 for this case,' it said in a statement on Thursday (June 5). It added that all dealings related to the 274m-tall tower's transfer of ownership would be prohibited with immediate effect. This seizure comes after the tower, owned by the family of former finance minister the late Tun Daim Zainuddin, was originally seized by MACC in December 2023 due to an offence under the MACC Act 2009. This was believed to be part of an anti-money laundering probe that started in late May involving a corporate transaction valued at RM2.3bil (US$500mil) in November 1997 involving public-listed Renong Bhd and United Engineers Malaysia Bhd (UEM), which were both linked with Umno. On May 22, MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said that eight investigation papers had been opened into the assets owned by Daim, his family and proxies, which had not been declared to the MACC during its initial 2023 investigation, due to having received new information from external agencies. Then on Wednesday (June 4), the High Court allowed an application by MACC to freeze assets worth £132mil in London that were allegedly linked to Toh Puan Na'imah Abdul Khalid, wife of the late Tun Daim Zainuddin, and her family.
