Mumbai Congress leaders complain of ‘organisational stagnancy', target Gaikwad

Even as parties are preparing for the upcoming local body elections, a section of Mumbai Congress leaders are targeting city unit chief and Lok Sabha MP Varsha Gaikwad, alleging organisational stangnacy. However, the leaders who were to meet Ramesh Chennithala, AICC incharge of state unit, in Pune on Tuesday, postponed the meeting.
'We are not against any individual. We want to convey to the All India Congress Committee that there is organisational stangnacy in the Mumbai unit. We are not taking up the civic issues aggressively as compared to our ally Shiv Sena(UBT) and there is decline of the party's presence from media as well,' said a senior Mumbai Congress leader who was to be in the delegation to meet Chennithala.
Another leader said that the Mumbai unit of the party was lacking at organising cultural events that resonate with Mumbai and Maharashtra, especially the Marathi culture. 'We have nothing against the Mumbai Congress chief. But we certainly want the organisation to be more active,' he said.
However, Mumbai Congress chief Varsha Gaikwad said that it was decided in the party leaders' meeting in Delhi that she will remain the chief of Mumbai unit.
'I prefer to ignore these reports, which are nothing but gossip. Instead, I choose to focus on my work that involves opposing issues such as Adani land grab in Mumbai and corruption in BMC. I am sure that all my colleagues in the party will join me in the protests,' she told The Indian Express.
Gaikwad said that as a woman and a Dalit leader, she is focused on building the party in Mumbai.
However, this groupism in the party ahead of the local body polls comes as a rude shock to many workers who feel that the party should remain united to take on the BJP and its allies. There are others in the Mumbai unit feel that this groupism has existed in the party for decades.
'Every Mumbai Congress chief has faced this and it is not new. Varsha Gaikwad has been vocal against Adani for months. It is expected that all Mumbai Congress leaders join her in protests in Dharavi, Mulund and Kurla. Mumbai Congress leaders putting up a united front will surely make a difference,' said a Mumbai Congress leader, who said that he has chosen neither side.

Andhra Congress Leader Slams Jagan Reddy Over "Chandrababu Naidu-Rahul Gandhi Hotline" Remarks

Amaravati: AICC in-charge for Andhra Pradesh Manickam Tagore on Wednesday hit back at former Chief Minister and YSR Congress Party president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy after he alleged that Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi is in touch with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu through hotline. The Congress MP said that the people of Andhra Pradesh know that Chandrababu Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Jagan and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan are together. Tagore also told Jagan that Rahul Gandhi has not surrendered to Modi and Shah like him. He dared Jagan to join the Congress party's fight against 'vote chori'. He said instead of appreciating Rahul Gandhi for the fight to protect democracy, Jagan gave his own imaginary stories. At a press conference in Amaravti on Wednesday, Jagan ruled out support to the Congress party's fight against 'vote chori'. Questioning the silence of Rahul Gandhi on the 'vote chori' issue raised by YSRCP after last year's elections, Jagan alleged that Chandrababu Naidu was in touch with Rahul Gandhi through Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. "Why didn't join us when we raised a similar issue after the 2024 elections, where there was a variation of 12 percent between the votes polled and counted," asked Jagan Mohan Reddy. The YSRCP chief also questioned Rahul Gandhi's silence on what he called the corruption of TDP-led coalition government. "Congress spokesperson Manickam Tagore criticizes only me, as Chandrababu Naidu is in touch with Rahul Gandhi through a hotline, or else how can he show a blind eye on the corruption of the coalition government with the mushrooming of belt shops, permit rooms, and selling liquor at more than MRP," he asked. In a video statement posted on 'X', Manickam Tagore said Rahul Gandhi was not fighting for Congress alone but he was fighting for democracy. "He has surrendered to (Amit) Shah and he is not afraid of Modi like Jagan. We are fighting the battle against HM Shah and PM Modi to protect India's democratic rights," the Congress MP said. He alleged that in 39 to 48 Lok Sabha constituencies, Amit Shah organised manipulation with the Election Commissioners He said Rahul Gandhi was embarking on yatra in Bihar on the issue of SIR to protect people's right to vote. "Jagan must have minimum courtesy to acknowledge and appreciate work of Rahul Gandhi instead of finding fault and giving his own imaginary stories about Babu and other stories," he said. Tagore said if Jagan has guts to fight against Modi and Shah, he should join the march to be led by state Congress president Y. S. Sharmila on August 14 in Vijayawada. Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) general secretary also reacted to Jagan's remark saying their only true 'hotline' is with the people of Andhra Pradesh. "Forget your 'vote chori' excuses - you were voted out because people were tired of your 'note chori' in scam after scam. You know exactly what I'm talking about," posted Lokesh, who is son of Chandrababu Naidu. Your baseless attempts to mislead will fail. Our double-engine sarkar is here to deliver, and under the leadership of Narendra Modi and Chandrababu Naidu, Andhra Pradesh will rise to number one again, he added.

Marathi outfit protests at kabutarkhana; mulling controlled feeding, BMC tells Bombay HC

Members of a pro-Marathi outfit were detained by the police on Wednesday for staging a protest at the kabutarkhana in Mumbai's Dadar in support of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) ban on feeding pigeons. Marathi Ekikaran Samiti chief Govardhan Deshmukh, who was also detained, asked why no case had been filed against members of the Jain community who allegedly removed the tarpaulin sheets covering the pigeon feeding spot on August 6. Members of the Marathi outfit were released later. Jain monk Nileshchandra Vijay on Monday had warned of launching an indefinite hunger strike from Wednesday against the civic body's move to close down kabutarkhanas in the city and stated that 'if necessary, we will also take up arms for religion'. Pramod Sudhakar Parte, vice-president of the Marathi Ekikaran Samiti, said they were angered by the remarks of the monk. 'Believe in ahimsa' Later, the Jain monk clarified that he meant taking the path of satyagraha. 'When I said shastra (arms), I meant taking the path of satyagraha (search for truth) like Mahatma Gandhi and sitting on hunger strike. We believe in ahimsa (non-violence). This is not a conflict between Marathi and Marwari,' he said, adding that he is willing to meet Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray to avoid escalation of the row. Later in the day, the BMC informed the Bombay High Court that it intends to allow controlled feeding of pigeons at the kabutarkhana in Dadar daily for two hours from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. under certain conditions. The court, however, directed the civic body to issue a public notice inviting objections before taking a final decision. Advocate General Birendra Saraf, for the State government, submitted a list of 11 names to be part of a committee that would carry out a scientific study on the issue of feeding pigeons at public places and its impact on human health. The High Court said the government shall notify the committee by August 20. The court was hearing a bunch of petitions filed by people who regularly feed pigeons at kabutarkhanas. 'Find middle ground' Meanwhile, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis advocated for finding the 'middle ground' to resolve the ongoing controversy, saying both public health and religious sentiments must be respected. He proposed creating designated feeding areas away from human settlements and noted that 'controlled feeding could be one solution'.

Siddaramaiah on back foot after losing two ST ministers in 2 years

Synopsis The Congress government in Karnataka faces backlash after dismissing Valmiki community minister KN Rajanna for criticizing "vote theft," a move directed by AICC leadership. This decision, following B Nagendra's earlier resignation due to fund diversion allegations, has shocked Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and risks alienating the crucial Ahinda voting bloc, while the BJP attempts to capitalize on the community's discontent. Agencies Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Bengaluru: The Congress government in Karnataka has gone into a defensive mode, refraining from reacting much to the constant barbs hurled at it by the Opposition BJP over the firing of Valmiki community (ST) minister KN Rajanna. Chief minister Siddaramaiah removed Rajanna from the ministry on directions from AICC leadership, displeased over his critical comments on "vote theft". His removal from the state cabinet comes a year after another Valmiki minister, B Nagendra, resigned after allegations of diversion of funds meant for the welfare of ST members surfaced. Rajanna's ouster has been a shocker for Siddaramaiah as the MLA from Tumakuru district has been a loyal follower, known for his blunt talk. His exit comes at a time when the CM had been trying to bring back Nagendra into the Cabinet. Siddaramaiah, who belongs to the backward class Kuruba community, has cemented his position as a tall leader of the Ahinda (acronym for minorities, backward classes and Dalit) voters. But now, the community could doubt his ability to protect its political way Rajanna was removed will exact its own political price, said an ST leader. BJP too has been trying to foment anger in the numerically strong community by supporting Rajanna's remarks and projecting him as a victim. "Congress government is always ready to betray the Valmiki community," the BJP said in a post on X.
