NIIF to make a $700-million first closure of $1 billion Private Markets Fund II
National Investment and Infrastructure Fund
(
NIIF
), a quasi-sovereign
investment
manager backed by the Centre, is set to complete a $700-million first closure of its latest Private Markets Fund (PMF II) within the next month, according to sources familiar with the development.
This initial close marks a significant increase compared with the debut fund, PMF I, which raised $600 million in 2019.
This week, the
New Development Bank
(NDB), a Shanghai-based multilateral development bank established by the BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—committed $100 million to PMF II. The
Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank
(AIIB), which had backed PMF I, also reaffirmed its support with a $125 million commitment in May.
The government will remain the single largest investor in PMF II, contributing 49% of the total capital.
ET first reported in April last year about the launch of $1-billion PMF II.
Live Events
The Private Markets Fund is dedicated to supporting India-focused
private equity
and
venture capital
funds. With a target size of $1 billion, PMF II aims to invest across key growth sectors, including electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, waste management, urban and social infrastructure, technology, manufacturing, and their associated supply chains.
Mirroring the structure of PMF I, PMF II plans to build a diversified portfolio comprising approximately 15 funds as well as direct investments in companies. About 75% of the fund's capital will be allocated to growth and venture capital funds, with the remaining 25% invested directly into Indian enterprises, added sources.
Since its inception, PMF I has deployed $600 million across 60 companies through nine portfolio funds. It has backed notable funds such as Multiples PE (owned by Renuka Ramnath), Lighthouse India, Invascent, Eversource Capital, Somerset Healthcare, Arpwood Partners, Yournest Capital Advisors, HDFC Capital Advisors, and Amicus Capital Partners.
Last year, GoI had appointed Sanjiv Aggarwal as Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director. Agarwal, a former Partner at UK's infrastructure fund Actis, replaced Sujoy Bose, first managing director & chief executive officer of NIIF.
The Private Markets Fund is headed by managing partner Anand Unnikrishnan, who joined NIIF in 2018. Prior to joining NIIF, Anand was a senior member of Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets (MIRA) team in India for about 10 years.
When contacted, an NIIF spokesperson declined to comment.
Overall, NIIF manages over $4.9 billion in equity commitments across four distinct funds: the Master Fund (infrastructure), Private Markets Fund (fund of funds), Strategic Opportunities Fund (growth equity), and India-Japan Fund.
NIIF is also launching its Master Fund II in a couple of months, targeting a commitment of about $4 billion.
NIIF's investor base comprises a diverse group of sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, multilateral development banks, and government counterparts. Prominent backers include the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), Singapore's Temasek, Australian Super, Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB), Asian
Infrastructure Investment
Bank (AIIB), Asian Development Bank (ADB), New Development Bank (NDB), and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).

Gold price today: Rates climb as focus remains on US trade talks; experts highlight these key levels for MCX Gold
Gold price today: Gold rates inched up in morning trade on Monday, July 21, as investors awaited fresh updates on negotiations between the US and its trading partners, while the dollar's weakness also supported the yellow metal. The dollar index declined over 0.10 per cent, making gold cheaper in other currencies. MCX Gold August 5 contracts traded 0.11 per cent higher at ₹ 98,127 per 10 grams around 9:10 AM. MCX Silver September 5 contracts were down 0.01 per cent at ₹ 1,12,937 per kg at that time. The focus remains on US trade negotiations as the August 1 deadline approaches. Persisting uncertainty over the tariff front remains a key support for gold prices. While talks between the US and the European Union continue, according to a Financial Times report, US President Donald Trump plans to impose a minimum tariff rate of 15 per cent to 20 per cent on any deal with the European Union. Meanwhile, investors are closely watching for greater clarity on the ongoing India-US trade negotiations, which remain stalled over several key issues. One major sticking point is India's stringent regulations, including mandates for vegetarian feed in cattle farming and its cautious stance on genetically modified (GM) crops, driven by environmental and health concerns. According to Manoj Kumar Jain of Prithvifinmart Commodity Research, gold has support at $3,340-3,327, while resistance is at $3,374-3,389 per troy ounce, and silver has support at $38.10-37.84, while resistance is at $38.70-39.10 per troy ounce in today's session. MCX Gold has support at ₹ 97,770-97,440 and resistance at ₹ 98,360-98,640 while silver has support at ₹ 1,12,200-1,11,400 and resistance at ₹ 1,13,650-1,14,500, said Jain. Jain suggests buying silver on dips around ₹ 1,12,200 with a stop loss of ₹ 1,11,450 for the target of ₹ 1,13,650-1,14,200. Rahul Kalantri, VP of commodities at Mehta Equities, said gold has support at $3,330-3,310 and resistance at $3,370-3,390. Silver has support at $37.85-37.55 and resistance at $38.45-38.65. In INR, Kalantri said gold has support at ₹ 97,680-97,450 while resistance is at ₹ 98,250-98,480. Silver has support at ₹ 1,12,180-1,11,450 while resistance at ₹ 1,13,750-1,14,500. Captain Fresh to file IPO papers by mid-August, launch $50–75 million pre-IPO round
Mumbai: Captain Fresh, a business-to-business (B2B) seafood marketplace, is expected to file its draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) for an initial public offering (IPO) within the next three weeks, according to two people familiar with the matter. 'The company is expected to file the IPO papers by mid August and will subsequently launch its pre-IPO round," one of the two people said, adding that the seed investors are expected to sell in part or full in a $50-75 million round. The planned filing is part of the company's broader push to access public markets in the current financial year through a $400 million IPO. It converted into a public entity earlier this month and has appointed Axis Capital and Bank of America to manage the issue. Seed investors in Captain Fresh include Ankur Capital, ADB Ventures, Z47, Incubate Fund India and Hoskoppal Ventures, according to data from Tracxn. Captain Fresh and the investors did not immediately respond to Mint's requests for comment. In December, Mint reported that the company was in talks to raise a $50-100 million round in which some of its late-stage investors, including Accel and Prosus, were expected to infuse additional capital. Captain Fresh last raised about $48 million in a round led by Evolvence India and British International Investment, valuing the company at slightly over $500 million. Other investors include Motilal Oswal Wealth, Tiger Global Management and Innoven Capital. Founded in 2019 by banker-turned-entrepreneur Utham Gowda, the Bengaluru-based company operates a farm-to-retail seafood supply chain, aiming to link small-scale fishermen and coastal farmers with fragmented retail demand across India. It offers both a digital commerce platform and a physical fulfilment network for retailers across formats. The company also has a presence in international markets, including the US, Spain, and the West Asia. It competes with startups such as Waycool, Apnaklub, and FarMart. Over the past two years, Captain Fresh has focused on narrowing losses while scaling operations. Its operating revenue rose to ₹1,395 crore in FY24 from ₹817 crore in FY23. Losses narrowed to ₹229 crore in FY24 from ₹294 crore the previous year, according to an Entrackr report. The company is yet to file its FY25 audited results.
