Kunder was flying the aircraft, and his hands were on the controls.
Sabharwal, as the monitoring pilot, would likely have had his hands free.
That's a key distinction, US pilots and safety experts say, and one that points toward who had the opportunity to touch the guarded fuel switches.
But people familiar with the cockpit recordings and US officials' review say the black box strongly suggests it was Sabharwal who moved them.
Ben Berman, a former senior NTSB official, told the WSJ: 'There was nothing to prompt the crew to perform emergency procedures, become stressed, or do anything except rotate the nose up and retract the landing gear, like they had done so many times before.'

'Human hand' behind the error
Captain Steve Scheibner, an aviation expert and seasoned pilot, believes the deadly Air India crash may have been the result of a human act inside the cockpit.
He suggested

The switches - guarded and located between the pilots - require deliberate action to move. Accidental flicking is virtually impossible.

Scheibner said the offs of a dual engine flameout on a Boeing 787 seconds after takeoff were "two and a half billion to one".
"Everything just seems unbelievable," he added.
'When you place both fuel cutoff switches to cut off, that will fuel-starve the engines and they'll both flame out.
'There is no universe where there's any procedure ever in the history of commercial flight where you place both fuel control switches to cut off, leave them there for 10 seconds, right after rotate.'

Who was Sumeet Sabharwal?
Captain Sumeet Sabharwal was no novice.
With over 15,000 flying hours — more than 8,000 on the Dreamliner — he had long been considered steady and reliable.
Friends described him as soft-spoken, precise, even minimalist.
'He was a very reserved guy right from the beginning,' said fellow pilot Kapil Kohal.
Known as 'Sad Sack' in flight school for his solemn demeanor, Sabharwal lived simply.
Two shirts, two shoes, one bag.
'He was a middle-class boy looking at the sky and saying, 'I want to be there,'' Kohal said.
But in recent years, Sabharwal had faced personal struggles.

Some aviation sources told The Telegraph he had taken time off in past years for mental health issues.
Though he passed a Class I medical exam in September 2024, investigators are now combing through his records.

Investigation intensifies
US officials believe the crash may warrant a criminal investigation — something that would be automatic if the tragedy had happened on American soil.
In similar cases, the FBI would be brought in to assess whether a deliberate act had occurred.
Jennifer Homendy, chair of the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), has been fully briefed on the cockpit recordings and flight data, and is pushing for clarity.
Her priority, she said, is 'to quickly determine whether the crash presented any immediate safety concerns to the travelling public.'
So far, Boeing, GE Aerospace, and the FAA have issued no warnings or directives following the crash.
The
Air India's CEO Campbell Wilson has urged staff not to jump to conclusions.
'The preliminary report identified no cause nor made any recommendations,' he said.
'It provided both greater clarity and opened additional questions.'
Indian authorities, meanwhile, have declined to comment on the American reports.
A Ministry of Civil Aviation press officer dismissed the Wall Street Journal's reporting as 'one-sided.'

Is today's political climate making dating harder for young people?
The last year has highlighted a political divide between young men and women. Data from elections in several countries shows that women aged 18-29 are becoming significantly more liberal, while young men are leaning more conservative. And a recent 30-country study found generation Z more divided than other generations on key questions around gender equality. At the same time, there is growing evidence that this cohort is turning away from traditional dating and long-term romantic relationships. According to the National Survey of Family Growth, in the US between 2022 and 2023, 24% of men and 13% of women aged 22-34 reported no sexual activity in the past year. This is a significant increase on previous years. And, American teens are less likely to have romantic relationships than teenagers of previous generations. In the UK, surveys over the past decades reveal a trend in reduced sexual activity, in terms of both frequency and number of partners, among young people. Dating apps are also losing their lustre, with the top platforms seeing significant user declines among heterosexual gen Z users in the last year. Is the gendered political divide making dating harder? As sociologists of intimacy, our work has shown how relationships are affected by larger social, economic, and political trends. Our research on enduring gender inequality has shown that it can affect the perceived quality of intimate relationships and relationship stability. For example, heterosexual relationships are often underpinned by unequal divisions of emotional and domestic labour, even among partners with similar incomes. Some commentators and researchers have identified a trend of 'heteropessimism' — a disillusionment with heterosexual relationships, often marked by irony, detachment, or frustration. Anecdotally, women have widely expressed weariness with the gender inequality that can emerge in relationships with men. But heteropessimism has been identified among men too, and research has found that women are, on average, happier being single than men. Take domestic labour. Despite progress towards gender equality in many areas, data shows that women in mixed sex relationships still shoulder the majority of housework and care. In the UK, women carry out an average of 60% more unpaid work than men. This gap persists even among couples who both work full-time. In Korea, persistent gender inequality is thought to be behind the 4B movement. Young Korean women, fed up with sexist stereotypes which tie women to traditional roles, have declared their rejection of marriage, childbirth, dating, and sex with men. Beyond Korea, young women have declared themselves 'boy sober'. Harassment, abuse, and 'toxic behaviour' on dating apps has reportedly driven young women away from wanting to date at all. Others have embraced voluntary celibacy. One reason is that, for some women, the erosion of reproductive rights, such as the overturning of Roe v Wade in the US, sharpens the political stakes of intimacy. Political disagreements that may once have been surmountable in a relationship are now deeply personal, affecting women's bodily autonomy and experiences of misogyny. Young women have declared themselves 'boy sober'. Harassment, abuse, and 'toxic behaviour' on dating apps has reportedly driven young women away from wanting to date at all. In education, evidence suggests boys are falling behind girls at every level in the UK, though recent research shows this has reversed in maths and science. Men report feeling locked out of opportunities to care for their children through old-fashioned parental leave norms, which offer minimal opportunities for fathers to spend time with their children. Some influencers capitalise on real and perceived losses for men, pushing regressive and sexist views of women and relationships into the social media feeds of millions of boys and young men. Given all of the above, it is not entirely surprising that young men are more likely than young women to report that feminism has done more harm than good. But there are wider political and economic issues that affect both young men and women, and how (or whether) they date each other. Gen Z are coming of age in a time of economic depression. Research shows that those experiencing financial stress have difficulties in establishing and maintaining intimate relationships. This may partly be because early stages of romance are strongly associated with consumerism — dinner out, gifts, and so on. But there is also a lack of mental space for dating when people are under pressure to make ends meet. Insecure finances also affect young people's ability to afford their own homes and have access to private spaces with a partner. There are, additionally, growing rates of mental ill health reported by young people worldwide. Anxieties abound around the pandemic, economic recession, the climate, and international conflict. These anxieties play out in the dating scene, with some feeling that entering into a romantic relationship is another risk to be avoided. Research with UK-based heterosexual dating app users aged 18-25 found that they often saw dating as a psychological stand-off — where expressing care too soon could result in humiliation or rejection. The result was that neither young men nor women felt safe expressing genuine interest. This left people stuck in the much-lamented 'talking stage', where relationships fail to progress. As sociologist Lisa Wade and others have shown, even when casual sex is part of the picture, emotional attachment is often actively resisted. The proliferation of 'hook-up culture' — characterised by casual sexual encounters that prioritise physical pleasure over emotional intimacy — may partly be a response to a cultural discomfort with vulnerability. Gen Z's turn away from dating doesn't necessarily reflect a lack of desire for connection, but perhaps a heightened sense of vulnerability related to larger trends in mental ill-health and social, economic, and political insecurity. It may not be that young people are rejecting relationships. Rather, they may be struggling to find emotionally safe (and affordable) spaces where intimacy can develop.

Suzanne Harrington: I feed a seagull in my garden — while the children of Gaza starve
Every morning, a massive seagull sits outside the back door, waiting for breakfast. He loves bananas and cashews. He hates cherries and blueberries. He puts up with pineapple, if there's nothing else. And he wolfs down lumps of bread, which protrude sideways in his fat neck, like a python who has swallowed a cow. In the garden under the seomra where I'm writing, two foxes set up home last winter. Every night, they come out for dinner. They like eggs in their shells, and dry dog food, but will eat anything, including tofu and jam sandwiches. In the hedge, there's a colony of tiny, tweety birds, who like to viciously fight each other for the unending supply of sunflower seeds in their feeder, and a very zen hedgehog who trundles out to steal bits of fox food. Recently, during the hot weather, I dug a hole and put in a little pond, complete with water pump, aquatic plants, and pond bacteria that keeps the water clean, so that any or all of the above could have a drink or a dip, if they fancied. Which they do. Were I to harm any of these creatures who hang out in my garden, I'd be breaking the law. Under UK law, it's illegal to injure, kill, or harass seagulls, or their nests and eggs. This law has been in place since 1981. Foxes are protected under another animal welfare act, from 2006, and hedgehogs have two different laws protecting them. Right now, this second, the wildlife in my garden is better-fed and has more legal rights to be not just alive, but to live in peace, than the small children of Gaza — and their parents and grandparents, their aunts and uncles, and cousins and friends. Quite literally, the tweety birds in my hedge have better access to daily nutrition and fresh water than these starving children and their starving families. Last year, thinking that a human-rights lawyer and the son of a Black immigrant single parent might be a less-bad electoral bet than the Brexit-inducing Eton yobs who preceded them, I stupidly voted Labour. Now, watching Britain's prime minister, Keir Starmer, and foreign secretary, David Lammy, kowtowing to a 'terrorist' state while criminalising peaceful domestic protest against possible genocide as 'terrorism', I'm in an acute state of voter regret. Usually, voter regret just means whoever you voted for didn't get in. That a human-rights lawyer I helped elect could, after less than a year in power, be propping up a possible genocide by selling military components to a 'terrorist' regime intent on mass-murdering innocents so that they can turn their occupied territory in to a blood-soaked Riviera — what I wouldn't give to revoke my vote and a sizeable chunk of the UK electorate would be with me. Even the right-wing, migrant-hating Daily Express printed an image of a starving Palestinian toddler on its front page the other day. A starvation enabled by a rampaging American dictator. Yet we're supposed to care about Oasis, or Ozzy, or those Coldplay kiss-cam people, or how bad the English women's team are at penalties, while, a few short hours away, ordinary people are being murdered by starvation. Mother of Air India crash victim ‘heartbroken' after remains wrongly identified
THE MOTHER OF a British Air India crash victim has said her family is 'heartbroken' after receiving news the remains of her son were wrongly identified, The Sunday Times reported. The London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner crashed into a medical college shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad Airport on June 12, killing 241 people on board. Some 169 Indian passengers and 52 British nationals were killed, making it one of the deadliest plane crashes in terms of the number of British fatalities. Among the British victims were Fiongal Greenlaw-Meek, 39, and his husband Jamie, 45, who had been returning to Britain after celebrating their wedding anniversary in India. Mr Greenlaw-Meek's mother, Amanda Donaghey, told The Sunday Times she flew to India after the crash in order to find her son's remains, providing a DNA sample at Ahmedabad's Civil Hospital to assist the identification process. Following a match on 20 June, she returned to the UK with Mr Greenlaw-Meek's coffin. But on 5 July, as Mr Greenlaw-Meek and his husband's families prepared to bury the married couple together, police told Ms Donaghey that DNA tests carried out in the UK showed Mr Greenlaw-Meek's remains were not in the coffin. 'We don't know what poor person is in that casket,' she told The Sunday Times. 'I had my doubts but to be told that was heartbreaking. 'This is an appalling thing to have happened,' she added. 'And we would now like the British Gvernment to do everything in its power to find out, and bring Fiongal home.' It was revealed last week the coffin of another repatriated British victim, 71-year-old Shobhana Patel, contained remains of multiple people, The Sunday Times reported. Mrs Patel was killed alongside her husband Ashok, 74, as they returned to the UK from a Hindu religious trip. Their son Miten Patel told The Sunday Times: 'There may have been a mistake done. Advertisement 'But for religious reasons we need to make sure my mother is my mother and not somebody else's remains. 'Knowing 100% that it is my mum is very important to us.' Shobhana and Ashok Patel were laid to rest last week, The Sunday Times said. International aviation lawyer James Healey-Pratt, whose firm Keystone Law is representing families of victims of the Air India crash, has told Times Radio the identification issues have raised concerns over the total number of victims whose identities may have been misattributed. 'We know that 12 caskets were repatriated from India to the UK,' he said. 'Of those 12, two had been mishandled, misidentified. 'And so if you extrapolate that sample, you're looking at 40 mishandled remains out of 240. 'So that's a very large number, but we simply don't know. 'And to date, the Indian authorities have not been transparent or helpful about that, which is why there was pressure put on by the families to the FCO and the Prime Minister's office. 'And this was actually mentioned in the meeting at Chequers between Keir Starmer and Prime Minister Modi on Thursday. 'So the families are waiting to hear, first thing next week, about what actions are really being done in India to provide some degree of assurance.' It is understood no blame is being put on any UK agency for the blunders, Mr Healy-Pratt previously told the PA news agency. The only surviving passenger on the plane was Briton Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, who previously told The Sun it was a 'miracle' he was alive but felt 'terrible' he could not save his brother Ajay. A preliminary report into the incident from India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau found both of the plane's fuel switches moved to the 'cut-off' position 'immediately' after take-off, stopping fuel supply to the engine. It has sparked questions over whether the crash was deliberate.
