Trump says tariffs set to rise as high as 70%: White House to begin sending notices to countries; businesses await announcements
US President Donald Trump said on Friday morning that he plans to bring back a set of tariffs he first put in place in April. He had paused them for 90 days to try and make deals with different countries, but most of those deals haven't materialised yet.
Now, US businesses don't know what tariffs they'll have to pay on many imported goods.
Some of the new tariffs might be even higher than the original ones.
Trump spoke briefly to reporters at Andrews Air Force Base after returning from a rally in Iowa on Thursday.
'So we're going to start sending letters out to various countries starting tomorrow,' he said, just hours after the House passed a major domestic policy bill.
'They'll range in value from maybe 60 or 70 per cent tariffs to 10 and 20 percent tariffs.'
He added his administration would keep sending more letters to countries each day until the 90-day pause ends on Wednesday. By then, he expects all the countries to be included. He added that smaller countries would be contacted last, and the US would start collecting the tariffs on August 1.
'It's a lot of money for the country, but we're giving them a bargain,' Trump said.

The original set of 'reciprocal' tariffs was placed on US trading partners and ranged from 11 per cent for the Democratic Republic of the Congo to 50 per cent for Lesotho. These tariffs were calculated using a formula based on how much each country buys from the US, even if the country was very small and didn't trade much.
These reciprocal tariffs were in addition to a 10 per cent 'baseline' tariff that applied to all countries.
A few days later, after the bond market reacted strongly to fears that global trade could come to a halt, President Trump changed his mind. The tariffs were lowered to 10 per cent for all countries, except China, which had its base tariff raised to 145 per cent.
Since then, countries have been rushing to make deals with the White House to bring more stability to their trade ties with the US.
China reached a temporary deal that brought its tariff down to 30 per cent. Britain made an agreement in early May to keep its duties at 10 per cent. And this week, Vietnam agreed to a plan that would set its tariffs at 20 per cent, along with higher taxes on Chinese goods passing through the country.
However, talks with other countries, including Japan, Malaysia, India, and the European Union, haven't led to much progress yet.

On Thursday, treasury secretary Scott Bessent said he thought about 100 countries would probably end up with at least a 10 per cent tariff rate, but more deals are still being worked out. "I think we're going to see a lot of action over the coming days,' he said. Last week, Bessent mentioned that some of the talks could continue until September 1.

India proposes retaliatory duties against US auto tariffs
NEW DELHI: India on Friday proposed imposing of retaliatory duties under WTO norms against the US tariffs on imports of auto parts in the name of safeguard measures. "The proposed suspension of concessions or other obligations would take the form of an increase in tariffs on selected products originating in the US," according to a notification of the WTO being circulated at the request of India. India has notified WTO's Council for Trade in Goods of its proposed suspension of concessions and other obligations under certain WTO provisions. "This notification is made in connection with safeguard measures extended by the United States of America on imports of automobile parts from India," it said. On March 26 this year, the US adopted a safeguard measure in the form of a tariff increase of 25% ad valorem on imports of passenger vehicles and light trucks, and on certain auto parts from India. These measures apply from May 3, 2025 as regards auto parts, and for an unlimited duration. The measures have not been notified by the US to the WTO, but are, in essence, safeguard measures. India has maintained that the measures taken by the US are not consistent with the GATT (General Agreement on Trade and Tariff) 1994 and the agreement on safeguards. As consultations sought by India on these tariffs have not taken place, "India reserves the right to suspend concessions or other obligations", the WTO notification added. "Accordingly, India's proposed suspension of concessions would result in an equivalent amount of duty collected from products originating in the US," it said. To ensure the effective exercise of its right to suspend substantially equivalent concessions or other obligations, the multinational body said, India has reserved its right to adjust the products as well as the tariff rates. Ahmedabad: Gujarat's real estate sector attracted Rs 5.03 lakh crore in investments since the implementation of the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act (RERA) in 2017. However, a lion's share of 94% of this capital is concentrated in just five districts: Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Vadodara and Rajkot, largely driven by rapid urbanisation, better infrastructure, and stronger demand for housing and commercial spaces. In contrast, the remaining 28 districts, which house nearly two-thirds (64%) of Gujarat's population, received only 6% of the total investment. Experts, however, have raised concerns over resource concentration and highlighted the need for more equitable infrastructure growth across Gujarat's smaller towns. Borivli-Thane tunnel casting yard planned close to SGNP
Mumbai: A portion of Sanjay Gandhi National Park's (SGNP) eco sensitive zone (ESZ) in Mira Road is set to be used for a 22.6-acre casting yard for the Borivli-Thane twin tunnel project, prompting protests from activists. A casting yard is where concrete structures like segments, parapets and beams for an infrastructure project are cast and is located in a manner that allows easy access from the project site. Of the 22.6-acre plot for the tunnel project's casting yard, 5 acre falls within the ESZ. Activist Stalin D of NGO Vanashakti told TOI that the ESZ notification strictly prohibits setting up of polluting industries inside the boundaries of the zone. "Any action that violates it will be challenged in the courts. The agencies involved cannot pretend to be ignorant of the law and they cannot create third party rights in the ESZ," he said. MMRDA officials did not respond to queries from TOI. The proposal for the casting yard says it will not affect the ESZ's ecological balance (see graphic). Local activists claimed that even tribal land is part of this casting yard plot. Uttam Naik, Mira-Bhayander representative of People's Republican Party, recently wrote to revenue department officials on this issue. "Big machinery will only harm the surrounding environment and increase pollution," he complained. Last week, the national green tribunal had ordered the closure of two casting yards and ready-mix cement plants operating within the limits of the ESZ of SGNP at Thane's Ghodbunder Road. Once opened, the tunnels will help shave 12km from a Thane-Borivli trip, saving up to 1 hour, and will also provide direct connectivity, significantly decongesting traffic on Ghodbunder Road and Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road.
