
'Americans are poisoning themselves': CDC reveals how over 50% of daily calories come from ultra-processed junk

This is the first time the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has officially confirmed how high these levels are, based on diet data collected from August 2021 to August 2023.

Ultra-processed foods include burgers, sweet baked goods, salty snacks, pizza, and sugary drinks, all of which are popular across the United States.
According to the CDC report, about 55% of calories eaten by Americans aged 1 and older came from ultra-processed foods. For adults, it was about 53%, while for children and teenagers, it reached almost 62%.
Young children ate slightly fewer ultra-processed foods compared to teenagers. Among adults, those aged 60 and older consumed less than younger adults. Low-income adults were found to eat more of these foods than those with higher incomes.

'This isn't surprising,' said Anne Williams, a CDC nutrition expert and co-author of the report.
However, she added that it was surprising to see a small drop in ultra-processed food consumption over the last decade. For example, adult intake fell from 56% in 2013–2014, and for children, it dropped from 66% in 2017–2018.
Williams said she couldn't say for sure what caused the drop.
But Andrea Deierlein, a nutrition expert at New York University who was quoted by AP, said, 'There may be more awareness of how harmful these foods can be. People are trying, at least in some populations, to eat less of them.'
U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has also raised alarms. 'We are poisoning ourselves, and it's coming principally from these ultra-processed foods,' he told Fox News, as reported by AP.
What Are Ultra-Processed Foods?
The CDC used the Nova classification system, which is widely used around the world. This system groups foods into four levels based on how much they are processed.
Ultra-processed foods usually:
Contain little or no whole foods
Are high in salt, sugar, and bad fats
Are low in fibre
Are 'hyper-palatable' (very tasty and easy to overeat)
Officials in the U.S. have said there is still confusion about how to define these foods. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Agriculture Department have asked for public input to help create a clearer definition for the U.S. food supply.
Why Is This Important?
Ultra-processed foods have long been linked to obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, though many studies could not prove that these foods directly cause these conditions.
A small but important study showed that even when people ate the same number of calories, they gained more weight when eating ultra-processed foods compared to less processed foods.
Another new study in the journal Nature found that people lost twice as much weight eating minimally processed foods like chicken, pasta, fruit, and vegetables, compared to eating processed ready meals or protein bars, even if the meals had similar nutrients.
What Can People Do?
Deierlein said people should try to eat less ultra-processed food where possible.
For example, instead of instant oatmeal that contains added sugar and preservatives, people could use plain oats and sweeten them with natural honey or maple syrup.
'I do think that there are less-processed options available for many foods,' she said, as quoted by AP.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones reveals cancer diagnosis and credits experimental drug

(AP) — Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones credited an experimental trial drug for successfully treating advanced melanoma as he disclosed his cancer diagnosis publicly for the first time. HT Image Jones revealed his illness in a documentary, 'America's Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys,' which will debut on Netflix next week. The 82-year-old Jones then told The Dallas Morning News how he was initially diagnosed in June 2010 and underwent two surgeries on his lung and two on his lymph nodes over the next 10 years after skin cancer cells metastasized to other parts of his body. 'I was saved by a fabulous treatment and great doctors and a real miracle (drug) called PD-1 (therapy),' Jones said. 'I went into trials for that PD-1, and it has been one of the great medicines. I now have no tumors.' First-year Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer described Jones' fight with cancer as an 'amazing story' and praised him for going public. 'I'm glad that Jerry shared it, just because I think it gives people hope,' Schottenheimer said Wednesday. 'It gives people the strength to say, 'OK,' you know, 'Hey, you can beat this.'' Schottenheimer, 51, used his last news conference of the Cowboys' nearly monthlong stay in Southern California to talk about his own cancer diagnosis. He underwent surgery in 2003 for thyroid cancer at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Then-Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder helped arrange Schottenheimer's treatment two years after firing his father, Marty Schottenheimer, as head coach. Brian Schottenheimer was Washington's quarterbacks coach during the 2001 season, the same year Snyder himself was treated for thyroid cancer. 'It doesn't discriminate against anybody,' Schottenheimer said. 'And mine was certainly less serious, but I was 28 when I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. US alcohol consumption at record low as health concerns rise, survey finds
Bengaluru: Alcohol consumption among adults in the U.S. is at the lowest level on record, a survey by analytics firm Gallup showed on Wednesday, as most Americans, for the first time, view even moderate drinking as harmful. Gallup's latest Consumption Habits survey, conducted annually, showed that about 54 per cent Americans reported drinking alcohol, compared with 58 per cent in 2024 and 62 per cent in 2023. The figure falls below the previous record low of 55 per cent in 1958 in the nearly nine decades of tracking by Gallup. Alcohol sales have been falling since the pandemic drinking binge, as inflation and interest rates stretch consumer wallets. Spirit makers now also face growing warnings from public health authorities who say drinking even small amounts of alcohol is associated with at least seven types of cancer. A majority of Americans - 53 per cent - say moderate drinking is bad for health, Gallup found, up from 45 per cent last year. Fewer U.S. drinkers are consuming alcohol regularly, with a record-low 24 per cent saying they had a drink in the previous day and 40 per cent reporting more than a week since their last - the highest share since 2000, the survey found. Average intake over the past seven days fell to 2.8 drinks, the lowest since 1996 and down from 3.8 a year ago, far below the 2003 peak of 5.1 drinks per week, the reports showed. "The declines in alcohol consumption does not appear to be caused by people shifting to other mood-altering substances - in particular, recreational marijuana, which is now legal in about half of U.S. states," Lydia Saad, Gallup's director of social research, said.

Tennis legend Monica Seles diagnosed with rare autoimmune disease, reveals struggle with ‘difficult' symptoms
Monica Seles, nine-time grand slam champion and one of the greatest tennis players of all time, revealed that she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease called myasthenia gravis. The former Serbian-American world number one explained that she has been struggling against this disease over the last five years, and decided to speak out about it in a bid for awareness. 'I would be playing [tennis] with some kids or family members, and I would miss a ball. I was like, 'Yeah, I see two balls.' These are obviously symptoms that you can't ignore,' explained Seles. The former star, who won eight of her nine slam titles as a teenager, revealed it required her to build up the courage to speak up about it as she battled with the implications of the disease: 'It took me quite some time to really absorb it, speak openly about it, because it's a difficult one. It affects my day-to-day life quite a lot.' As per myasthenia gravis is a 'a rare long-term condition that causes muscle weakness. It most commonly affects the muscles that control the eyes and eyelids, facial expressions, chewing, swallowing and speaking. But it can affect most parts of the body.' Now 51 years old, Seles explained that she realised the significance of someone with her profile speaking up about such a situation, which prompted her decision to take her diagnosis public. 'When I got diagnosed, I was like, 'What?!' So this is where — I can't emphasise enough — I wish I had somebody like me speak up about it.' 'Then obviously my stabbing…' This is the latest in a career that has been full of setbacks for Seles: after her incredible start to her career which saw her well on the way to being the greatest tennis star in history, she was infamously stabbed in the upper back during a match in Hamburg as a 19-year-old, after which she was only able to add one more grand slam to her tally. Seles reflected on how those experiences had helped her resolve herself against this diagnosis, and made it just the next occasion on which she had to roll with the punches and remember how to 'adjust'. 'It's a very tough time. Then, obviously, becoming a great player, it's a reset, too, because the fame, money, the attention, changes (everything), and it's hard as a 16-year-old to deal with all that. Then obviously my stabbing — I had to do a huge reset,' explained the tennis great. 'And then, really, being diagnosed with myasthenia gravis: another reset.' 'But one thing, as I tell kids that I mentor: 'You've got to always adjust. That ball is bouncing, and you've just got to adjust.' And that's what I'm doing now,' concluded Seles.
