Artists Open Houses 2025: Visit Adam Johnson and Dan Mackey in their Brighton home studio (EXCLUSIVE)
'I've been taking part for 11 years, ever since I started dating Adam, who has Open Housed since 2009. I was living in London at the time and travelling down to Brighton to be creative and it felt like where I wanted to be permanently,' Mackey tells Attitude.
'Adam was my first boyfriend who enjoyed art and design too and we are still enjoy working together on this strange and amazing festival where you invite art lovers into your home.'
You may recognise Adam Johnson from his cracking run on the fourth series of Channel 4's The Great Pottery Throw Down or the BBC's , in which Johnson married Mackey.
Or you might have spotted him on the as a trailblazer in the arts.
In 2021, Johnson capitalised on his newfound fame and launched Adam Ceramic, offering his and Mackey's clay creations to his fanbase.
'We consciously made it so that we spend our days together working across all aspects of being self-employed artists, and our skill sets work in synchronicity,' Johnson says. 'Most potters have quite a solitary time in a studio, so I'm glad I get to share it all with Dan and Egg, our pug.'
It's no secret that retail is hard, and it is difficult to make those personal connections that drive sales through a website. But Brighton's Artists Open House event has been a financial lifeline for Johnson and Mackey.
'There's nothing like an in-person sale when I can chat to someone, and they get to touch my piece before taking it home. It's a joyful way for me and Dan to exhibit and meet customers that can see where everything is made,' Johnson explains.

Mackey reveals what they have planned for this year's Open House, 'We've taken lots of inspiration from woodland and beach walks with our dog Egg. So, our garden is open and filled with 'pick your own' ceramic mushrooms and garden sculptures blending in with the spring plants that have popped up. Inside we always love displays that are just as fun as the artwork – packing the place with personality. No stuffy gallery vibes here.'
From their home studio in Brighton, the couple make full use of social media to promote their wares. 'It can sometimes feel like a minefield, spending hours trying to make a good reel to showcase my work, and then the algorithm decides to hide it – or send it far and wide if you're lucky – and I have been incredibly lucky with some of my videos,' says Johnson, before admitting that it is a balancing act.

'Pottery is a quite traditional field too, so I dance across a line of being a proud gay and a potter, making a conscious decision to be completely me because our work is from our hands and our hearts. This approach has helped me create a really encouraging, friendly social community.'

BBC axes Survivor after one series
Survivor has been axed by the BBC. The reality series proved to be a ratings flop, and host Joel Dommett has now confirmed that it won't return for a second series. Joel, 40 - who has also hosted The Masked Singer since 2020 - told The Sun newspaper: "It just shows you how nothing is a given in telly. I thought Survivor would be huge. I thought that would be my job for the next 20 years. "I've done shows and thought that's not coming back and it keeps coming back and then you do something like Survivor, which you think is guaranteed and it doesn't come back." Earlier this year, Joel revealed that he was hoping for a second series of Survivor. The TV star also promised that changes would be made if the show came back. In an interview with the Metro newspaper, he said: 'Fingers crossed … there's a lot of stuff that we would do slightly differently. 'Like with every first series, it's hard, so I think a second series would be amazing. 'Everyone seems to really love it, so I'm excited that – hopefully – [we get to] do another one." The first episode of the rebooted Survivor - which launched in October 2023 - only received 2.6 million viewers, despite airing at the prime-time slot of 8:25pm on a Saturday, after Strictly Come Dancing. Survivor's second episode was then replaced by David Attenborough's Planet Earth III. A TV insider also previously claimed that the BBC was not keen on renewing the programme for another series. The source told the Daily Mail newspaper: 'It has come as a huge surprise that Survivor is coming back. 'It is viewed by many within the Beeb as being a very expensive flop and the general view was that it should – and would – be canned. 'To spend that amount of money on a programme that is watched by such few people surely is a silly way to spend public money."

EastEnders actor died broke with no will, records show
EastEnders actor Nicholas Ball died broke and left nothing to his wife, legal documents show. The actor died aged 78 last year following a short battle with illness. He played Terry Bates in the BBC soap and also had roles in Footballers' Wives and Hazell. But records show Ball, of Porchester Square, London, left no will and nothing in his estate. A High Court document shows administration of the estate was granted to his wife Ayda. It reads: 'The application has stated that the gross value of the estate in the United Kingdom amounts to £0 and the net value amounts to £0.' Ball had been married to actress and psychologist Pamela Stephenson from 1978 to 1984. She left him for comedian Billy Connolly. Ball had a long acting career but reportedly struggled for parts after private eye series Hazell ended. He had played a number of supporting roles in various television series including Z-Cars, Softly Softly: Task Force, The Young Ones, Bergerac, Tales of the Unexpected, Casualty, and Holby City. Director Keith English paid tribute to him after his death, saying: "Fabulous as star of hit TV show 'Hazell' in the 1980s, Nick was a terrific actor - kind and generous. He starred in our short film 'Top Dog' in 2001 in which he was great and we became life-long friends with him and his wife, Ayda Kay. "Indeed, we were honoured when the pair of them asked if they could be married in our garden in 2019. A fabulous affair. "One of our fondest memories was going to see Jerry Goldsmith play The Royal Albert Hall with him and his great friend Mel Smith. "Mel had hired a box for the show. Both men were known hell-raisers and, sure enough, when the four of us rolled up they were both fairly merry and proceeded to football-chant 'There's only one Jerry Goldsmith!' between musical pieces to an uneven response from the rest of the auditorium. "Nick was a loving husband, friend and a wonderful actor. We enjoyed every minute of his company. Farewell and bon voyage."

MasterChef ripped for ‘disgraceful' Gregg Wallace edit as clip from scandal-hit series goes viral
MasterChef viewers have accused the BBC of 'disgraceful' editing after spotting what appeared to be repeated and awkwardly cut clips of axed host Gregg Wallace in the latest episode. Wallace and his long-time co-presenter John Torode were dropped from the cooking competition last month, following nearly two decades on air, after an investigation upheld multiple misconduct allegations. Wallace faced 40 upheld complaints, including claims of inappropriate on-set behaviour, while Torode was found to have used a racist term in 2018. The current series was filmed before their dismissal, with producers confirming the pair would still appear but with less screen time and minimal screentime. Two contestants have also requested to be removed from episodes to avoid being seen alongside the former presenters. And now amid the furore, fans watching Wednesday night's episode noticed the same shot of Wallace's face, that of a fixed grin, used multiple times in quick succession. One TikTok user Gingernat Design pointed out the editing gaf, captioning their post: 'Clever editing from MasterChef. 'Whether this is to do with the allegations or not I don't know, but it's jokes how they just froze Gregg Wallace for an entire conversation.' A viral TikTok clip highlighted the repeated footage, showing Wallace's frozen expression appearing three times during a conversation between Torode and a contestant. Reactions on social media ranged from disbelief to 'awkward' and 'petty.' 'I saw this and it looked absolutely demented,' one wrote. Another commented: 'Is this for real?' while a third penned: 'I'm crying and they picked a clip where he looks SO dodgy. Not helpful at all considering the recent allegations.' Under the same clip, another user, who claimed they work in TV production, suggested that the team behind the show used an industry editing trick. 'I work in post production in UK TV (not for the BBC or on Masterchef though), and based on the turnaround time, it was probably the quickest fix they could do, ' they clarified. 'Just reuse the previous shot to cover up any cut content. The Hosts certainly wouldn't be able to be completely edited out, however, unless they reshot all their bits with new hosts and spliced them in, but that wouldn't really ever happen due to money.' The Standard has contacted Banijay UK for comment on the claims about the apparent repetitive edits. The viewer commentary comes after a second contestant was edited out of the latest series of MasterChef. A Banijay spokesperson told The Standard: 'One other contributor decided that given recent events they would like not to be included. 'We have of course accepted their wishes and edited them out of the show.' BBC News reported that the contestant has requested anonymity and will not appear in any capacity. MasterChef is available to stream on BBC iPlayer now and airs on BBC One.
