Ottawa driver who nearly collided with police cruiser had unbuckled baby bassinet in front seat, OPP say
Ontario Provincial Police say a driver who nearly collided with a police cruiser in Ottawa had a baby in a bassinet in the front seat.
According to the OPP the vehicle was pulled over in the Campeau Drive area on Sunday.
'The officer immediately observed an infant in a bassinet, on the front passenger seat, not belted in,' police said in a post on social media.
Earlier in the day, the OPP said another officer saw a four-year-old walking around in the backseat of a moving car.
The fine for having a passenger under the age of 16 not wearing a seatbelt is $240.
'Infants and small children rely on their parents to help them buckle up properly,' police say.

Lethbridge Police Commission extends chief's contract until 2029
Lethbridge's police chief will stay on as the city's top cop for another four years. The Lethbridge Police Commission has announced Chief Shahin Mehdizadeh's contract has been extended until 2029. The commission says the chief has provided consistent leadership through a period of transition and change. The commission added that the extension of the contract comes at a time when the city's Crime Severity Index dropped 19 per cent compared to the year before. Mehdizadeh began his policing career with the RCMP in 1989 and has been with the LPS since 2020. The commission says his contract extension will help continue momentum in a positive direction in the years to come.

9-year-old girl on skateboard struck and killed in Spruce Grove
A Dodge pickup truck is towed away from Hartwick Manor, where a girl was struck and killed on Aug. 5, 2025. (Brandon Lynch/CTV News Edmonton) A 9-year-old girl is dead after being hit by a truck in Spruce Grove on Tuesday morning. Just before 9 a.m., Parkland RCMP responded to a call about a person hit by a truck on Hartwick Manor. The 9-year-old was sitting on her skateboard, which was rolling off the driveway, when she was struck by a Dodge pickup, RCMP said in a release. The girl was taken to hospital in critical condition but died of her injuries. Police had previously released a statement just before 10 a.m. that the area of Hartwick Manor would have a heavy police presence while they investigated a crash. They were on the scene for several hours. The driver of the pickup was not injured in the collision. No charges have been laid but police are investigating the crash, RCMP told CTV News Edmonton.
