BJP was never mum on Prajwal Revanna case, says Union Minister Pralhad Joshi

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Sunday said the BJP was never silent on former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna, who got life imprisonment in a rape case. The leader said the BJP has always maintained that whoever commits a crime should be punished. "There is a law in the country and whoever has done mistake or has committed crime, the court has examined and court has given the verdict. It has to be accepted by everybody," Joshi told reporters. When he was told that Congress leaders are alleging that the BJP is keeping mum on the issue because of its Alliance with the JD(S), he said, "Where have we kept mum and why we have to keep mum? I have already spoken on it. If somebody does something wrong he has to face action." "Are there not people in the Congress Party who committed heinous crime like this and they were with the Congress Party previously? They were with the Prime Minister. Yasin Malik was with the then Prime Minister. There are many people. I don't want to name much people," Joshi charged. The former Hassan MP was on Saturday sentenced to prison term for the remainder of his life, while the court slapped an overall fine of Rs 11.50 lakh on him, directing that Rs 11.25 lakh of it be paid to the victim woman, a domestic help of the accused family. The court had on Friday convicted the 34-year-old grandson of former Prime Minister and JD(S) patriarch H D Deve Gowda in one of the four sexual abuse and rape cases against him. The BJP and the JD(S) are alliance partners and its state president H D Kumaraswamy is a Union Minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi led central government. Regarding the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi's proposed agitation in Bengaluru on August 5, the Minister wondered what the protest was about. He said whenever Congress wins elections, it never complains but it blames Electronic Voting Machines or the Election Commission itself for losing polls.

Pawar clan bonds together at Yugendra Pawar's engagement

Political differences and feuds notwithstanding, the Pawar clan on Sunday bonded together at the engagement ceremony of patriarch Sharad Pawar's grandnephew Yugendra Pawar. The private ceremony was held at the residence of Yugendra Pawar's fiancée, Tanishka Kulkarni, in Mumbai. Yugendra is the son of Deputy Chief Minister and NCP head Ajit Pawar's younger brother Shrinivas. Families of NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, his cousin Supriya Sule, along with her husband and two children, attended the engagement function to bless the couple. Ajit Pawar's rebellion in 2023, which split the NCP, had raised questions over the familial ties. In the 2024 assembly elections, Yugendra was defeated by his uncle Ajit Pawar from the Baramati constituency. Earlier, Ajit Pawar's wife, Sunetra, was humbled by her sister-in-law, Supriya Sule, in the Lok Sabha elections. Sule had always insisted that the familial ties among Pawars were intact even after Ajit Pawar joined the BJP-led Maharashtra government in 2023. A few months ago, the Pawars attended the engagement ceremony of Ajit Pawar's younger son, Jay Pawar, in Pune.

Amid India-Philippines naval drill in South China Sea, President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr to arrive in New Delhi tomorrow

President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr of the Philippines is set to arrive in New Delhi on August 4 in his first trip to India since assuming office in 2022, even as the two countries have begun their first bilateral naval exercise in the South China Sea. A statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday said that Marcos Jr will be visiting India at Prime Minister Narendra Mod'is invitation. During his four-day visit, Marcos Jr will hold talks with President Droupadi Murmu; PM Modi; External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar; and Health Minister J P Nadda, who is also the BJP president. Marcos Jr will meet Jaishankar on August 4. On August 5, he will lay a wreath at Raj Ghat, before holding bilateral talks with PM Modi in Hyderabad House, wherein India and the Philippines will sign several agreements. He will then meet Nadda and travel to Bengaluru, where he will call on Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot. India and the Philippines began the two-day 'bilateral maritime cooperative activity' on Saturday in waters close to the Scarborough Shoal, a focal point of the maritime dispute between China and the Philippines. Sources say India is joining these efforts owing to its shared concerns about China's growing maritime power, including in the South China Sea. Defence cooperation is one of the strong pillars of bilateral relations and a promising area for future collaboration between India and the Philippines, says the website of the Indian embassy in Manila. India delivered the first batch of BrahMos missile system to the Philippines on April 19, 2024, making it the first foreign nation to acquire the missile weapon system. The diplomatic relations between India and the Philippines were established in November 1949. President Marcos Jr's state visit coincides with the 75th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic relations, the MEA said. The MEA statement further said that India's relations with the Philippines were an integral pillar of its 'Act East' policy, Vision MAHASAGAR, and its vision of the Indo-Pacific. The visit is an opportunity for both leaders to set the path for future bilateral cooperation and to engage on regional and international issues of mutual interest, it added. As per the website of the Indian embassy in Manila, there have been four presidential visits from the Philippines to India—by President Ferdinand E Marcos in 1976 (stopover visit), President Fidel Ramos in 1997, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in 2007, and President Rodrigo Duterte in Jan 2018. From the Indian side, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi visited the Philippines in 1981, followed by President R Venkatraman in 1991; President A P J Abdul Kalam in 2006, and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2007. More recently, PM Modi visited the country in 2017 and President Ram Nath Kovind visited it in 2019.
