Ex-White Sox pitcher has perfect response to Pope Leo XIV's fandom after ghastly 2024 season

New York Post10-05-2025

Erick Fedde knows the pain the White Sox's now most famous fan must have gone through — maybe needing to ask for divine intervention.
The Cardinals pitcher, who played for the historically awful 41-121 White Sox last season, was asked about the fandom of Robert Francis Prevost, the newly minted Pope Leo XIV, after pitching a complete game shutout against his former team, the Nationals, on Friday night.
'Is he officially a White Sox fan?' Fedde asked when Leo was brought up by reporters after Friday's 10-0 win. 'Well, maybe he had to pray a few times watching us.'

The world learned of Leo's loyalties to Chicago's South Side team shortly after he was named the leader of the Catholic Church earlier this week.
His brother, John Prevost, shot down reports that the new Pontiff was a Cubs fan.
Video also surfaced Friday of Leo dressed in White Sox gear in the stands for Game 1 of the 2005 World Series against the Astros.

Chicago won that World Series in four games, but rooting for the White Sox hasn't always been easy – especially recently.
The team set the modern record for most losses in an MLB season last year with 121.
The club is off to an 11-28 start in 2025.
John Prevost told WGN-TV he wasn't sure how his brother — the first American-born pope — came to love the Sox.

'He was never ever a Cubs fan, so I don't know where that came from,' Prevost said. 'He was always a Sox fan. Our mother was a Cubs fan. I don't know, maybe that clued in there and our dad was a Cardinals fan, so I don't know where all that came from.'
Fedde is off to a solid start to the season at 3-3 with a 3.86 ERA and 1.31 WHIP.
He was a bright spot for the White Sox last season, posting a 7-4 record and a 3.11 ERA before being traded to St. Louis in July

Cardinals Reveal Concerning Brendan Donovan News

Cardinals Reveal Concerning Brendan Donovan News originally appeared on Athlon Sports. St. Louis Cardinals utility man Brendan Donovan left Tuesday night's game against the Toronto Blue Jays due to discomfort in his left toe, the club announced. Advertisement Manager Oli Marmol later clarified that Donovan has been dealing with irritation in the joint of his left big toe for some time, and the pain finally forced him out of the game. 'He couldn't even get off his backside during that last at-bat,' Marmol said. 'It was hurting him pretty bad, so we took him out.' Donovan, who has easily been the Cardinals' most consistent hitter this season, went 0-for-3 before exiting the game. He was also struck by a pitch in the fourth inning, however it doesn't seem to be related to the injury. According to Cardinals beat writer John Denton, Donovan said the pain flared up suddenly Tuesday night. 'I was running around in the outfield, and it just started bugging me,' Donovan explained. 'Then it kind of just got progressively worse, and then it got real grumpy at me.' Advertisement X-rays came back negative, but Donovan noted he could hardly push off his back foot during his final at bat. 'It's on my left foot, so that's the foot I rotate off of,' he said. 'That's kind of what led to me coming out. I'll sleep on it, reevaluate tomorrow, and go from there.' The 28-year-old is in the midst of a career season, hitting .310 with four home runs and 26 RBIs. He ranks tied for third in the National League in hits, second in doubles, and fourth in batting average. The club hopes to learn more about the severity of the injury by Wednesday, but if Donovan is sidelined for an extended period, it would be a significant blow to a Cardinals team that has exceeded expectations in large part thanks to his performance. Former GM Jim Bowden Reveals Cardinals' Biggest Need to Contend

Former GM Jim Bowden Reveals Cardinals' Biggest Need to Contend originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With under two months before the trade deadline, MLB executives around the country are trying to figure out how to best position their team's for a deep postseason run. Advertisement Former GM and current MLB analyst Jim Bowden published an article Tuesday, suggesting what teams in contention need to do in order to contend. Bowden's biggest need for the St. Louis Cardinals was simple, "We just have to play" "The Cardinals have been one of the biggest surprise teams in baseball and appear to be legitimate postseason contenders. "Bowden wrote. "And it's interesting how they've been getting the job done — with solid consistency in the starting rotation and lineup, from top to bottom." St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado (28) runs the bases after hitting a two run home runJeff Curry-Imagn Images Bowden also opined how St. Louis should just stay the course. "The Cardinals don't have any glaring needs, nor do they appear to have the financial resources or top prospects they'd want to trade to make a splash at the deadline. So, if nothing changes between now and then and they stay in the race, don't expect big moves from their front office." He wrote. Advertisement "Instead, the Cardinals want their young major-league players to continue to develop, and could follow that path rather than look for reinforcements. For that reason, I did not list trade targets for them at this point." Entering this season, in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year, the Cardinals (36-31) have defied expectations. Once thought to be sellers before the trade deadline, - projected to offload stars like closer Ryan Helsley and third baseman Nolan Arenado - St. Louis sits five games back in the NL Central and only two games out of wild card contention. Cardinals' Make Announcement on Brendan Donovan Prior to Wednesday's Game Against Blue Jays

Cardinals' Make Announcement on Brendan Donovan Prior to Wednesday's Game Against Blue Jays originally appeared on Athlon Sports. St. Louis Cardinals utility man Brendan Donovan exited Tuesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays with what the club described as left toe pain. Advertisement Following a night of rest, the Cardinals released their starting lineup for Wednesday afternoon's series finale and Donovan was notably absent. It appears both Donovan and the team decided extended rest was the right move as they prepare for a six-game road trip starting Thursday in Milwaukee. Cardinals manager Oli Marmol addressed the injury after the game, saying, 'He couldn't even get off his backside during that last at bat. It was hurting him pretty bad, so we took him out.' Donovan offered more context, explaining, 'I was running around in the outfield, and it just started bugging me. Then it kind of just got progressively worse. I'll sleep on it, reevaluate tomorrow, and go from there.' St. Louis Cardinals second base Brendan Donovan (33) returns to the Burke-Imagn Images It appears that reevaluation led to the decision to give Donovan the day off. Advertisement The 28-year-old has been one of the Cardinals' most reliable bats this season, slashing .310 with four home runs and 26 RBIs. His presence has played a major role in the team's surprising early success, especially after low preseason expectations. With Donovan out, Nolan Gorman will take over at second base. The outfield will feature Lars Nootbaar, who had Tuesday off, alongside Victor Scott II and Alec Burleson. Fans are already feeling his absence as one person joked on 'X', 'Anyone know how to donate a big toe?' While the team hopes the injury isn't serious, all eyes will be on Donovan's recovery as the Cardinals prepare for a critical road stretch coming up.
