Former GM and current MLB analyst Jim Bowden published an article Tuesday, suggesting what teams in contention need to do in order to contend.
Bowden's biggest need for the St. Louis Cardinals was simple, "We just have to play"
"The Cardinals have been one of the biggest surprise teams in baseball and appear to be legitimate postseason contenders. "Bowden wrote. "And it's interesting how they've been getting the job done — with solid consistency in the starting rotation and lineup, from top to bottom."

Bowden also opined how St. Louis should just stay the course.
"The Cardinals don't have any glaring needs, nor do they appear to have the financial resources or top prospects they'd want to trade to make a splash at the deadline. So, if nothing changes between now and then and they stay in the race, don't expect big moves from their front office." He wrote.

"Instead, the Cardinals want their young major-league players to continue to develop, and could follow that path rather than look for reinforcements. For that reason, I did not list trade targets for them at this point."
Entering this season, in what was supposed to be a rebuilding year, the Cardinals (36-31) have defied expectations.
Once thought to be sellers before the trade deadline, - projected to offload stars like closer Ryan Helsley and third baseman Nolan Arenado - St. Louis sits five games back in the NL Central and only two games out of wild card contention.

Aaron Judge Projected to Break Yankees Record After Latest Home Run

Aaron Judge Projected to Break Yankees Record After Latest Home Run originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Unless you've been living under a rock for the past three months, it's pretty much impossible to miss how great New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge has been during the 2025 MLB season. Advertisement Sure, Judge has already scaled dizzying heights as a hitter for the most storied franchise in baseball history. He holds the Yankees' single-season home run record and has won the American League MVP award twice in the last three seasons. Whether or not he wins a World Series, he will go down as one of the coldest to ever do it in Yankees colors. But what Judge has been up to this 2025 MLB season surpasses any and everything that he has achieved through his ninth full season in the major leagues. The 33-year-old has unlocked a whole new level as a hitter based on his stats and the eye test this season. Judge leads the major leagues in batting average and hits. He notched up his 25th home run of the season through 66 games against Cincinnati on Wednesday. New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge (99)Credit: William Purnell-Imagn Images This brings his numbers to .394/.490/.779, with an OPS of 1.269. This OPS figure is the highest that any hitter has achieved since Barry Bonds' heyday in the early 2000s. Advertisement Judge is on pace to surpass Don Mattingly's 1986 record of 238 hits for the Yankees. If he produces at the same rate, he will end 2025 with 241 hits, which would place him tied-11th on the all-time MLB leaderboard. It goes without saying that Judge is facing possibly the toughest pitchers to ever grace the diamond. He has upped his production by swinging less often and reducing his strikeout tendencies. The Yankees' captain would be hoping to maintain this pace and help his team return to the World Series after their 2024 loss to the Dodgers. Elliotte Friedman Gets Painfully Honest About Possible Player-Coach Role for Sidney Crosby

Elliotte Friedman Gets Painfully Honest About Possible Player-Coach Role for Sidney Crosby originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Penguins officially named Dan Muse as their next head coach this week, replacing Mike Sullivan after three straight seasons without a playoff berth. Advertisement Muse, 42, enters the role with experience as an assistant coach with the Nashville Predators and most recently with the New York Rangers, where he specialized in managing penalty killing and special teams. Muse will now take over a team still anchored by a Penguins core of veterans featuring Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang, all of them under contract for at least one more season. While the appointment signals a new direction for the franchise, Sportsnet's Kyle Bukauskas brought an interesting idea to the table on Thursday. The analyst asked fellow NHL insider Elliotte Friedman on Thursday's episode of the "32 Thoughts" podcast whether Crosby might take on more than just an on-ice role given his experience and legendary stature within the franchise. Advertisement Bukauskas raised the idea of Crosby acting in an unofficial player-coach role next season, something Friedman doesn't see happening. "The only reason I'm going to say no, Kyle, is that I think if you went to Sidney Crosby and said, 'I see you more as a player-coach than anything else right now,'" Friedman said. "You might get stuffed into a trash can." Pittsburgh Penguins forward Sidney Crosby (87) tracks the puck against the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Bolte-Imagn Images Despite his age and 20 seasons of NHL experience, Friedman thinks Crosby remains focused on competing and is only interested in playing the game, not coaching it. "I can't think of Crosby as a player-coach," Friedman said. "I still think of him as an incredibly driven guy who wants to win more." Advertisement Friedman added that the hiring of Muse will likely draw more attention to Crosby's opinion and influence within the team's evolving structure, given that this is the first head coaching job taken by Muse throughout his professional career.
