Shillong: Union finance minister
Nirmala Sitharaman
chaired a stakeholder interaction in Shillong on Saturday, where she engaged directly with business leaders, entrepreneurs, industry representatives and citizens, reaffirming the Centre's commitment to the development of the northeast.
The event was organised by the Govt of Meghalaya in collaboration with the department of financial services, Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC) and the Central Board of Direct Taxes.
The session was attended by CBIC chairman Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, CBIC member Mohan Kumar Singh and senior officials from the Union ministry of finance, the Govt of Meghalaya and associated departments.
In a recognition, Sitharaman felicitated Rimiful Shylla and Wanjoplin, two of Meghalaya's top women taxpayers, for their commendable contribution to the nation's tax system.
During the interaction, stakeholders shared a range of observations and suggestions. Key issues included the need to ensure a balanced approach to the development that upholds environmental sustainability, the importance of fostering research and development and financial assistance for institution involved in R&D and greater policy attention to the hospitality sector.
Participants also highlighted the need to bring local industries under the Targeted Champion Sector Scheme, extend better access to credit and markets for startups and MSMEs — especially those rooted in the northeast — and enhance central infrastructure investments to boost regional industrial growth.
Concerns over high logistics costs because of the region's geographical challenges were also raised, with calls for rationalised transport subsidies.
Sitharaman welcomed the inputs and reaffirmed the Centre's commitment to inclusive, responsive and region-specific governance. She underscored the importance of participatory policy-making and said the govt is working to make tax systems and financial frameworks more accessible for all stakeholders.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called upon the new recruits for various Central government organisations, to consider their job as a golden opportunity to serve the citizens, irrespective of the position, department or place of posting. The Prime Minister addressed 51,000 new recruits at the 16th Rozgar Mela, organised simultaneously at 47 locations across the country, in virtual mode on Saturday. In Visakhapatnam, the programme was organised at the Sagarmala Conventions of Visakhapatnam Port Authority. 'Irrespective of your post and department, you should strive to live up to the expectations of the citizens by attending to their needs,' Mr. Modi told the recruits and congratulated them. He spoke at length on the welfare schemes launched by the Central government, which were intended to generate indirect employment in various sectors apart from safeguarding the interests of the beneficiaries for whom they were meant. Earlier in the day, Union Minister of Civil Aviation K. Ram Mohan Naidu, who participated in the Rozgar Mela from Visakhapatnam, urged the new recruits for the Railways, India Post, and other Central government organisations to work with dedication and commitment. Union Minister Amit Shah targets 25 per cent vote share in upcoming Kerala local body polls

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Setting the BJP's poll agenda in the state, Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday projected 25% vote share for the saffron party in the upcoming local body election. Addressing the party workers in Thiruvananthapuram, Shah trained guns on Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and claimed the BJP-led NDA will form government in Kerala in 2026. Highlighting the Centre's contributions to Kerala's infrastructure, Shah said contrary to perception, central allocations to the state have increased. He pointed out that the railway budget allocation for Kerala, which was just Rs 372 crore in 2004, has increased to Rs 3,700 crore under the Modi government. The Union minister addressed a massive gathering of party workers at Putharikandam ground at the 'Vikasitha Keralam' (Developed Kerala) event, which marked a significant show of strength for the BJP in the state. In his speech, Shah lashed out at both the ruling LDF and the Opposition UDF, accusing them of decades of corruption and neglect. 'For real change, Kerala must stop rotating power between the UDF and LDF. Both these fronts focus only on the development of their cadre. Only the BJP can ensure the development of the state,' he said. Energising the crowd of around 30,000 party workers by raising 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' slogan, he took a swipe at CM Pinarayi Vijayan. 'Let our voices be loud enough so that even the chief minister, who is abroad, hears about this powerful gathering,' he said. Rejecting the perception that the BJP is a party limited to northern India, Shah pointed to its growth in Odisha, Tripura, Telangana and Assam. 'BJP is now a national party in every sense,' he said, urging the party's grassroots workers to take the message of 'Viksit Bharat' and 'Vikasitha Keralam' to every household. The Union home minister launched a fierce attack on the LDF and UDF, accusing them of turning Kerala into a hub of corruption and lawlessness. He also drew comparisons between major corruption scandals during their respective tenures. He termed the gold smuggling case as the 'biggest government-sponsored corruption'.
