Marcos flies to meet Trump in Washington visit
During his departure speech at the Villamor Air Base in Pasay City, Marcos said his visit aims to push for 'greater economic engagement.'
'I intend to convey to President Trump and his cabinet officials that the Philippines is ready to negotiate a bilateral trade deal that will ensure strong, mutually beneficial, and future-oriented collaborations that only the United States and the Philippines will be able to take advantage of,' Marcos said.
'I expect our discussions to focus on security and defense of course, but also on trade. And we will see how much progress we can make when it comes to the negotiations with the United States,' he added.
The Philippine President also said his visit will reaffirm the Philippine's 'commitment to fostering our long-standing alliances as an instrument of peace and a catalyst of development in the Asia-Pacific region and around the world.'
Among the topics Marcos and Trump will discuss is the steep 20% tariff rate on Filipino goods entering the US, as Manila hopes to strike a mutually acceptable and beneficial tariff deal with the US.
Marcos' visit will be from July 20 to 22. The visit is the first by an ASEAN head of state to the United States under Trump's current administration.
Aside from Trump, Marcos will have a meeting with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on July 21.
Several businesses in the US also expressed their intention to meet with the Philippine leader, Department of Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Raquel Solano said.
Marcos will also invite Trump to attend the East-Asia Summit as the Philippines will host the ASEAN Summit in 2026. — RF, GMA Integrated News

Romualdez reelected Speaker for 20th Congress
Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez was reelected as Speaker of the House of Representatives during the opening of the First Regular Session of the 20th Congress Monday. Romualdez secured his second consecutive stint as top House leader with 269 votes after his nomination was supported by the following political parties: Party-list Coalition represented by TUCP party-list Rep. Raymond Democrito Mendoza Lakas-CMD represented by Quezon Rep. Jayjay Suarez Nationalist People's Coalition represented by Quezon Rep. Mark Enverga Nacionalista Party represented by Yevgeny Emano National Unity Party represented by Antipolo Rep. Ronaldo Puno Partido Federal ng Pilipinas represented by Ilocos Norte Rep. Ferdinand Alexander Marcos "I rise today to nominate a man whose leadership has been tested, proven, and deeply felt across this chamber and beyond: the Honorable Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez. In the 19th Congress, Speaker Romualdez steered this institution with both resolve and wisdom," Suarez said. Marcelino Libanan. All the House members who did not vote for Romualdez will elect their leader in a separate election. Marcos directs reorganization of Presidential Legislative Liaison Office
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has directed the transfer and reorganization of the Presidential Legislative Liaison Office (PLLO), which acts as a conduit between the Office of the President (OP) and the individual members of Congress. Signed on July 16, Marcos' Executive Order 90 provides that it is imperative to reorganize the PLLO to streamline and rationalize its functions consistent with the rightsizing policy of the administration towards bureaucratic coherence. The reorganization will also enable the PLLO to more effectively and efficiently deliver the President's legislative agenda for the country. The PLLO shall be under the supervision and control of the Office of the Executive Secretary as one of the delivery units of the OP Proper. The position of the Presidential Adviser on Legislative Affairs with the rank of Secretary is hereby abolished, the EO stated. The PLLO shall be headed by an Undersecretary who shall be assisted by two Assistant Secretaries, one for the Senate and one for the House of Representatives. Mark Llandro Mendoza, who most recently held the PLLO Secretary post, tendered his courtesy resignation following President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s bid to "recalibrate" his administration. Mendoza's resignation was accepted and later announced by Malacañang. Adrian Carlos Bersamin is the new head of the PLLO, with the rank of Undersecretary. According to a Facebook post by the PLLO on Saturday, Bersamin will lead the office "toward stronger stakeholder partnerships and more responsive policy coordination in support of the Administration's legislative agenda." Under Executive Order 11 (s. 2022), the PLLO was placed under the supervision and control of the Office of the Special Assistant to the President as part of streamlining the administrative structure of the OP. The Executive Secretary shall have the authority to assess and evaluate the organizational structure, staffing pattern and the corresponding qualification standards for all positions in the PLLO. The Executive Secretary will also implement personnel actions and reorganization measures as may be necessary, and craft the organizational structure and staffing pattern of the PLLO, in accordance with relevant laws, rules and regulations. In the exigency of service, and pending approval of the new organizational structure and staffing pattern, the PLLO and its existing personnel shall continue to operate and function under their existing mandates as prescribed by relevant laws, rules and regulations. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
