Millennial Man Can't Cope With How Gen Z Answers the Phone: 'Can't Be Real'

There are many things that Gen Zers do that leave millennials perplexed, but their latest habit to leave internet users stunned is their phone etiquette.
Millennials (people born between 1981 and 1996) have a lot to say about their younger counterparts, from their fashion sense to their quirky behavior. We have had to accept many things about Generation Z (people born between 1997 and 2012) ultimately, but one millennial man can't hide his shock any longer, and he has taken to social media to share his thoughts.
Josh Levesque from Long Beach, California, shared a video on TikTok (@joshblevesque) to criticize Gen Z's questionable phone etiquette. He highlighted the idea that Gen Zers will supposedly answer the phone without uttering a word, just staying silent until the caller speaks to them.
The idea of not greeting someone when they call is "insane" behavior for Levesque to comprehend. He even wondered if it is a weird prank that Gen Z are playing because it seems too absurd to be true.

After taking to TikTok to share his thoughts on Gen Z not saying hello when answering the phone, the video has gone viral with more than 917,800 views and over 55,700 likes at the time of writing.
Newsweek has contacted Levesque via Instagram for comment. We could not verify the details of the video.
During the clip, Levesque said: "I'm not asking you to fully initiate conversation with like a prepared monologue. I don't need you to recite a f****** poem; I need, 'Hello, this is Josh.' Just something. That's phones, that's how phones work."
Given how tech-savvy Gen Z are, you would think they'd understand simple phone etiquette—but apparently not.
Levesque even weighs up several of the Gen Z arguments for why they don't speak first during a call. This includes the idea of it being a potential scam call, or the idea that the caller has come into their space so it is on them to introduce themselves. Neither of these points seems sufficient for Levesque, who says, "This can't be real."
He adds in the video that he was introduced to this behavior by a recruiter who claims that Gen Zers often remain silent when answering his scheduled calls for a phone interview. While Levesque says that he doesn't have to call any young people so he hasn't experienced this himself, he saw a lot of commenters and social-media users unashamedly stating that this is something they do.
The TikTok caption alongside the video reads: "I refuse to believe this is a thing that is actually happening. Please tell me you at least say hello … like everyone who's ever answered a phone in the history of telecommunications."
Since the clip was shared online on July 12, it has certainly captured plenty of attention and generated discussion about this latest Gen Z habit. Many TikTok users have taken to the comments section to share their thoughts, leading to more than 8,300 comments on the viral video so far.
One comment reads: "So they basically just Gen Z Stare when they answer the phone?"
Another TikTok user wrote: "I call you and I don't hear confirmation that the call went through, I'm hanging up."
A third person replied: "Instantly, throwing away the application and not hiring that person."
But not everyone agrees, as one commenter added: "nah you called me. introduce yourself, explain yourself and maybe ill respond."

What's going on with JaNa and Kenny from 'Love Island?' Fans parse following lists for clues
The "Love Island USA" fandom is in a desperate search for answers about one of their favorite couples. Social media users are speculating about a possible rift in the beloved Season 6 cast after JaNa Craig appeared to remove almost all of her content with boyfriend Kenny Rodriguez from her Instagram grid on July 27. Not only that, but Instagram accounts for her fellow PPG (the self-appointed Power Puff Gang) members Leah Kateb and Serena Page, and their respective partners, Miguel Harichi and Kordell Beckham, have all appeared to unfollow Rodriguez. Most of the cast of their Peacock spinoff show "Love Island: Beyond the Villa," currently in its first season, are also not following Rodriguez. None of the cast members have publicly commented on the apparent rift. The comments sections for Craig's past posts have also been limited. USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Craig and Rodriguez for comment. Peacock did not respond to a request for comment. Finalists from "Love Island USA's" breakout season last year, Craig, 28, and Rodriguez, 25, have been in a relationship since leaving the villa in July 2024. They confirmed their relationship status in the Season 6 reunion, which dropped the following month. 'They're very toxic': Why Kaylor Martin won't watch 'Beyond the Villa' On Peacock's "Love Island" spinoff, Rodriguez and Craig are navigating their relationship while living in close quarters for the first time in Los Angeles. Fan accounts and close watchers of reality TV-related drama rang the alarm on a possible uncoupling on July 27, which prompted a close watch of other "Beyond the Villa" cast members' social media accounts. "Red alert ring the alarm," journalist Christina Cocca wrote alongside a post with screenshots of Craig's Instagram. Kenny and JaNa previously said communication was their strength While speaking with USA TODAY in separate interviews on July 8, Rodriguez and Craig opened up about navigating a relationship that is also intertwined with their careers as influencers. "We're very communicative when it comes to those things: what we feel comfortable putting out there (and) what we don't. And I think that's just the sign of a healthy relationship," Rodriguez said. Craig, seated with Page on one side and Kateb on the other, admitted that it has worked best to keep some things for themselves when fans demand more couples' content. "I feel like your relationship is very private. You know, just you and your partner communicating 24/7," Craig said. "Whereas publicly it's like putting yourself out there, understanding what your viewers and your supporters want and navigating through that and whatever you're comfortable with."

When your poolside snack is interrupted by a surprise guest (and no one knows who's more startled)
In a now-viral TikTok with over 14.6 million views, mom @ellamcconkey the reality of traveling with young kids. It's the reminder every parent needs before their next trip—because no matter how well you plan, something hilarious (or chaotic) is always around the corner. The video starts off peaceful: a toddler, fresh from a swim, quietly enjoying her fries—until a lizard scurries into frame. Neither saw it coming. The video's caption reads, 'God forbid a girl tries to eat her french fries in peace on vaca,' and the text overlay drives it home: 'Lunch by the pool is fun until it's not.' The little girl's split-second reaction—an honest mix of confusion, fear, and restraint—has viewers both laughing and impressed: 'They were both scared ,' wrote @Laririri. 'The lizard: where's the ketchup,' joked @Amanda Franchi. And @amy bloom nailed the vibe: Because traveling with kids never goes exactly to plan Whether you're road-tripping with a baby or wrangling toddlers through TSA, every parent knows: the memories you make on vacation aren't always the ones you planned. Sometimes they show up in the form of a a diaper blowout just as the plane starts to a beloved stuffed animal accidentally left behind at the last hotel. The moments that stick often aren't on the itinerary. They're the tiny plot twists that turn into stories your family tells for years. Related: Toddler gives viral crumpet order—and mom's calm response wins the internet The tiny surprises that shape kids (and parents) Emotional resilience often begins in small, unexpected situations, like a sudden burst of fear met with reassurance or a surprise encounter at the lunch table. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), moments like these help children build the confidence and coping skills they'll rely on as they grow. How adults respond matters too. A calm presence, a quick laugh, or a reassuring hug can help kids feel safe enough to move through the moment. Even retelling the story later, when everyone is dry and eating fries again, can turn a brief disruption into a shared memory. Related: Toddler picks up mom's nickname for dad… and won't stop using it The memories you don't plan, but never forget You might forget the timeline, the meltdown in the rental car lot, or why you ever thought a museum was a good idea. But someone will remember the fries. Someone will remember the chaos. And someone will definitely remember the toddler who just wanted to eat in peace, and got a side of drama instead. Because when you're traveling with kids, the best stories tend to sneak up on you—messy, hilarious, and completely the wildest thing that's happened on a family trip?
