Nashik civic body starts repairing city roads, fills over 6,000 potholes in a week

Nashik: With the rain taking a break, the Nashik Municipal Corporation's (NMC) public works department has commenced extensive road repair operations across the city. The civic administration announced on Tuesday that it had successfully filled 6,226 potholes across the six divisions within the last week alone. These crucial road repair efforts began ahead of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis's two-day visit to Nashik city on Sunday and Monday. During his visit, the chief minister travelled through various city roads while attending multiple programmes. The condition of roads in Nashik had significantly worsened due to continuous heavy rainfall last month, posing considerable risks to motorists. Furthermore, roads excavated by Maharashtra Natural Gas Ltd (MNGL) for laying piped natural gas pipelines added to the deterioration. While the NMC had initially planned to begin repair works from May 15, persistent showers prevented these efforts. Now, with the rainfall having ceased, the civic body has been able to fully embark on its road repair agenda. An NMC official, while talking to TOI, said they conducted a fresh survey of the city roads and found around 9,000 potholes in various parts of the city. "So far, we have filled 6,226 potholes and the remaining will be repaired shortly. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now At 3,831, most potholes were repaired in the Panchavati division followed by over 2,800 potholes in the Cidco division," the official said. "The roads that were dug up by the MNGL and other agencies for various purposes deteriorated the road conditions of most of the city roads. We have also started repairs of such roads. We also gave work orders to the agencies concerned for road repairs and resurfacing of some stretches of the city roads amounting to Rs 90 crore," the official added The official said all the city roads are to be repaired in the next couple of weeks.

How many bullets he fired? Bulandshahr man acquitted of murder after 5 years

Noida: The fast track court of additional sessions judge, Saurabh Dwivedi, acquitted Neeraj Sharma, who spent five years in jail after police falsely accused him of attempted murder and firing at officers in 2018. Evidence revealed that Sharma, a Bulandshahr resident, was actually the victim who had been shot by the police. The court ordered his immediate release on May 31, exposing a case of wrongful imprisonment and police misconduct. The case goes back to July 2, 2018 when a Bisrakh police team was on patrol near Hanuman Temple after a tip-off about suspicious vehicles coming from Sorkha and Hindon Bridge. According to the prosecution, the police team, which was on patrol in their private vehicle, had split into two teams to conduct the checks. During checks, an informer identified a motorcycle carrying alleged 'anti-social elements' with illegal arms. When asked to stop, the riders allegedly fired at police with the intention of killing and tried to flee. The pillion rider, Neeraj, shot twice before the bike skidded, throwing both off. While the rider escaped, Neeraj fired again, prompting police to shoot in self-defense. The prosecution claimed during the trial that the firing was retaliatory. Refuting these claims, Sharma said the encounter was false and instead, he was picked up by police, shot at, and he was booked in a fabricated case. Seeking trial, his counsel, Deepak Vats, said that after firing on Sharma, police made up a story to accuse him of firing on police and possessing illegal arms. Having heard both sides, the court noted serious flaws in the prosecution's case, including a failure to prove that the pistol recovered from the accused was functional. No forensic or ballistic tests were conducted to confirm if the pistol had been fired. Additionally, there were contradictions in witness testimonies as prosecution witness 2 (Rajendra Kumar) claimed the accused fired two bullets, with both empty cartridges recovered from the scene, while witness 1 (Devendra Rathi) stated only one cartridge was found, with the other stuck in the pistol. These inconsistencies raised doubts about the prosecution's version of events. The court also found the use of a private vehicle and the missing general diary entry, ahead of the claimed patrol of July 2, 2018, as doubtful. "Under the given circumstances, the prosecution has failed to establish the fact that the pistol produced here belonged to the accused or that he used it to fire on police, and accordingly, he deserves to be acquitted of the attempted murder charge levelled under section 307 IPC and also section 25/27 of the Arms Act for possessing an illegal weapon," the judgement read. Court ordered Sharma's immediate release and directed him to deposit a personal bond with two sureties of Rs 25,000 each.

CBI: Lalu forced babus to appoint those who gifted him land for jobs

NEW DELHI: as the then railway minister exerted excessive pressure on ministry officials to clear the applications of Group-D job applicants who gifted land parcels or sold them at dirt cheap rates to him and his family in exchange for railway jobs, CBI told a Delhi court Monday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now CBI has named 102 people as accused in the land-for-railway-jobs scam. Lalu's family acquired over 1 lakh sqft of land for just Rs 26 lakh against Rs 4.39 crore circle rate of the property, it alleged. The agency stressed the fact that multiple applications were cleared the same day while there was no advertisement for the vacancies. "Look at the speed. It is such a tedious process... How can so many applications in bulk be decided instantly? No justification was given to hire substitutes," special public prosecutor DP Singh told the court. CBI alleged discrepancies in the documents submitted by those given the jobs.
