Man, 71, who stalked actress Anna Friel bailed ahead of sentencing

Leader Live3 days ago
Phil Appleton, 71, sent numerous messages, visited the actress's home address on several occasions and left 'unwanted' gifts between January 1 2022 and December 11 2024, Reading Crown Court previously heard.
Appleton, of Windsor in Berkshire, pleaded guilty to a stalking offence under Section 2A of the Protection from Harassment Act 1997 earlier this week.
He was due to be sentenced on Thursday but judge Alan Blake adjourned the hearing until September 18 for a pre-sentence report to be carried out.
The defendant, who the court heard has been in custody for six months and has spent time in a mental health facility, was granted conditional bail.
Appleton must not contact Friel or enter the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead and is to co-operate with those conducting the pre-sentence report.
A website under his name appears to suggest that he is an actor and retired pilot.
Friel, 49, rose to fame with her role as Beth Jordache in Channel 4 soap opera Brookside.
She achieved international renown in 2007 starring as Charlotte 'Chuck' Charles in ABC comedy series Pushing Daisies.
In 2017, she won the International Emmy for Best Actress for her role as the title character in the ITV and Netflix mystery drama series Marcella.

Celebrity SAS star sobs after revealing Channel 4 series was 'torture'

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Former Celebrity SAS contestant Maisie Smith broke down in tears on live television as she recalled her 'torturous' experience on the Channel 4 series. Maisie, 24, appeared on Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins in 2022 – and emerged as one of its four winners, alongside footballer's son Calum Best, TOWIE star Ferne McCann, and Strictly pro AJ Pritchard. However, her time on the programme was a gruelling experience, as she recalled during an appearance on Channel 4's Sunday Brunch this weekend. The former EastEnders star was in the studio to promote the stage production of The Talented Mr. Ripley, in which she appears opposite The Crown actor Ed McVey. As she sat down for a chat with hosts Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer, talk turned to her time on Celebrity SAS. And, watching footage of herself powering through a desert with a heavy pack on her back, an emotional Maisie broke down in tears. Quizzed about her time on the programme, Maisie revealed: 'It was worse than you could even imagine. When I watched it back, there's so much more that they didn't even show. 'When we had mic packs, when they'd change the packs, you weren't allowed to talk. It was severe. There was never 'cut, cast can chill for a bit.' It was intense. Brutal.' Acknowledging that it was also 'the best thing I've ever done,' she described it as being 'harder physically' than mentally – recalling how she'd lugged 20 kilos of sand on her back while running through sweltering desert landscapes. 'For me, the physical aspect was torture,' she continued. 'But mentally I felt like I just couldn't quit. After watching footage of herself on the show, Maisie broke down in tears. 'I was so young. I was 19,' she sobbed, as Tim and Simon looked on awkwardly. 'It was such a big challenge. I'm proud of myself.' As the hosts appeared to flounder in the face of Maisie's tears, viewers took to social media to lend their sympathy. 'Simon looked awkward AF!' exclaimed DebbieGForLife. 'Both did! Full on panic!' the original tweeter replied. 'Well, this lass is the nicest person in the world,' commented MadKDog. 'Maisy [sic] is nice,' concurred Rosie12_1994. Elsewhere on the show, Maisie talked about how she and boyfriend Max George experienced a lucky escape when the holiday home they'd planned to stay in caught fire. Maisie met the 1975 star during their 2020 stint on Strictly Come Dancing, where they both appeared as competitors. After hitting it off in the ballroom, their relationship blossomed off-screen, and they officially became a couple in 2022. After being questioned by Tim over what she meant about the holiday destination being 'off-grid,' Maisie clarified: 'It was the South of France, it wasn't really off-grid, it's quite a common holiday destination. More Trending She added: 'But there was a fire and everything was destroyed. The house we were supposed to be staying in, it was destroyed.' Following the fire, she and the musician – who she also stars with in a stage production of War of the Worlds – ended up staying at a local AirBnB. Did their holiday get any better from there? View More » 'If you like to fish it was great… but if you didn't…' Maisie trailed off, to peals of laughter from the studio. Got a story? Strictly star forced 'off-grid' with boyfriend after fire broke out in holiday home

Strictly star forced 'off-grid' with boyfriend after fire broke out in holiday home The Strictly starhas explained why she was forced "off-grid" during a recent holiday to the South of France with her boyfriend. EastEnders actress Maisie Smith recounted a narrow miss when the property she and Max George were due to stay at in the South of France was engulfed by flames. ‌ During her chat on Sunday Brunch (August 10), the Strictly Come Dancing star relayed the alarming incident. Luckily, the couple had not yet reached their holiday abode when the blaze erupted, prompting a last-minute change in their accommodation plans. Maisie revealed that she and Max ended up lodging at an alternative location nearby their initial vacation spot, though it wasn't quite the perfect arrangement for her. ‌ The topic arose after hosts Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer questioned why their Channel 4 team had struggled to reach Maisie before her appearance on the show. They had been informed that the soap star had "gone off grid" and sought clarity on what this entailed. ‌ Maisie Smith talks near miss as holiday fire 'destroys everything' In his quest for answers, Tim was taken aback by Maisie's candid response early in the programme, reports the Mirror. Following Tim's inquiry, Maisie clarified there was an additional reason for her being unreachable, stating: "It was the South of France, it wasn't really off-grid, it's quite a common holiday destination." ‌ She continued, shedding light on the severity of the situation: "But there was a fire and everything was destroyed. The house we were supposed to be staying in, it was destroyed. Simon and Tim wanted to get to the bottom of why Maisie had been off-grid "So where did you stay," Tim enquired, clearly taken aback, to which Maisie disclosed: "In an airbnb, down the road from where we were supposed to be staying. ‌ "So all of your technical equipment was destroyed?" Tim probed further as Maisie informed him: "No, we were on a fishing lake." "Do you fish?" Tim continued, with her response being: "No but my boyfriend did?" Tim sensed that the EastEnders actress might not have had the most enjoyable experience, as she seemed less than thrilled about her rural French retreat. Maisie wasn't too enthusiastic about her holiday (Image: BBC) ‌ The presenter speculated whether Maisie had relished her time away, and the ex-Strictly contestant shared: "If you like to fish it was great... but if you didn't..." Her explanation was interrupted by laughter in the studio, prompting Tim to steer the conversation elsewhere. Maisie and Max became an item after meeting on the 2020 edition of Strictly Come Dancing, with their romance blossoming two years on in 2022. Article continues below On this particular Sunday Brunch episode, Simon and Tim also welcomed Rhys James, Sam Ryder, Tiwa Savage, and Ashley Thomas to the studio. Sunday Brunch airs every Sunday on Channel 4, from 10am.
