ENG vs IND: Broad, Buttler believe chirpy Sundar, Nitish fuelled England's Lord's win

India Today5 days ago
England's 22-run victory over India in the third Test at Lord's was a thrilling affair, and according to former England pacer Stuart Broad and white-ball wicketkeeper Jos Buttler, the on-field antics of India's Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar played a big role in firing up the home side. The game, which ended dramatically on Day 5, was closely contested, with India set a target of 193 runs. Despite India's early setbacks on Day 4, Sundar remained confident, declaring in a Sky Sports interview that India would win-likely before lunch on Day 5.advertisement"Definitely India winning, probably just after lunch We are sitting pretty, and we will come out positive. We have some solid batters in the dressing room," said Sundar.
But Sundar's confidence appeared to backfire. England, spurred on by the remarks, raised their intensity-led by a fiery Jofra Archer and captain Ben Stokes. Sundar's bold prediction came back to haunt him when he was dismissed for a duck early on Day 5, caught off Archer's own bowling.ENG vs IND, 3rd TEST HIGHLIGHTS | SCORECARDButtler, reflecting on Sundar's comments, said they became a motivator for England heading into the final day. Speaking on the For the Love of Cricket podcast, he explained:"There's a little clip of when Washington came out to bat and Brendon McCullum over the balcony, sort of telling everyone to raise it-it's the guy who's been chirping."According to Buttler, Sundar had unknowingly put a target on his back with his confident remarks."You set yourself up, don't you? It's horrible. But now everyone knows what I've said in the media last night, and everyone's after me. Even McCullum-possibly the only time he didn't have his feet up-he's leant forward to say, 'Come on. Let's ramp it up for this guy,'" said Buttler.Instead of a traditional pep talk, England needed no more motivation than Sundar's interview."I wonder if he's just sort of, you know, got his words out wrong, but it was proper incredible confidence. 'Yeah, we're going to win.' Someone will have heard that in the dressing room. It's almost like instead of anyone saying anything this morning for England, you could have just played that interview-and that would have got people so fired up."Meanwhile, Stuart Broad also reflected on how India's Nitish Kumar Reddy became a focal point of England's aggression following his vocal presence in the slips. Reddy had exchanged words with England's openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett earlier in the match. Broad explained that Archer's fiery spell was a deliberate move by the team to "meet fire with fire.""Jofra bowled quick-his fastest spell in an England shirt-up the hill at the Nursery End, flying through at 92 miles an hour. I said, 'God, I've never seen you as fired up as that.' Actually, it was a team plan. They've (India) had a go at Zak Crawley. We've got to meet fire with fire here," said Broad.advertisementThat plan became evident when Archer greeted Reddy with a sharp bouncer on the first ball he faced on Day 5-followed by the entire England team closing in to make their intentions clear. Broad described the moment as a coordinated response:"Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, Joe Rooty-getting stuck into Reddy-because reports came back from the middle when Crawley and Duckett were out there that Reddy was the most vocal."For England, the win highlighted their ability to remain composed under pressure-but it also underscored the power of words in high-stakes moments. As Broad and Buttler pointed out, it's often those bold predictions and heated exchanges that ignite a team's fire, shift momentum, and ultimately, change the course of a match.- EndsTune InYou May Also Like

‘You think I'm jealous?': Harbhajan Singh asks Ashwin, gets brutally honest reply

Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has addressed allegations that he was jealous of his former teammate Ravichandran Ashwin. Both players were part of India's 2011 World Cup-winning squad, but while Ashwin's career soared from there, Harbhajan's trajectory dipped amid fitness issues and rising competition. In a recent podcast on his YouTube channel, Ashwin brought up a comment from a viewer claiming that Harbhajan was jealous of him. "This whole jealousy bit. Before I allow you to answer that, let me clarify something. People look at everything from their perspective. For example, if they are passing a comment on me, they believe that others would see the world through their eyes. This comment that you are jealous of this person who is interviewing you today--what would that be about?" Ashwin stated in his question. Responding to Ashwin's question, Harbhajan replied, 'Do you think I am jealous of you? You are sitting here with me today. We have spoken at length. Do you think I am that kind of person?' Harbhajan may have expected a diplomatic reply, but Ashwin's candid response took him—and the internet—by surprise. "Even if you were jealous at one point, it is justified. That is my point. I would never take it the wrong way because we are all human. Naturally, it is bound to be like that." Ashwin responded. Harbhajan then explained that when a player with 400 wickets sees a new competitor in the squad, it's natural for a thought of competition to arise. 'I just want to make one point very clear that when you came into the side… you know that this could be the guy who could be playing for longer period of time…. One more guy has come in, it's competition. Now at that time, somewhere in my mind, even if just a small thought must have come, like 'I have to step up my game.'' Harbhajan responded to Ashwin's question. 'But somewhere, I feel that today, as we're sitting here, everything happens for a reason. I played this game, before me someone else was playing it, I replaced someone too.' Harbhajan added. 'Too honest and blunt for broadcasting media, Anna. 😭🙏🏻 My dream of seeing you as being a part of the Sky Sports commentary team is vanishing.' reacted one user to the clip of video shared by Ashwin. Meanwhile, other users reacted to a social media post that went viral for sharing the snippet of the above conversation. 'In all formats including ipl bhajji was great, surely Ashwin wasn't as good in all formats his odi career was one to be forgotten.I like both and see them better than kumble easily but bhajji is underrated maybe his attitude overshadows his legacy' noted one user. 'Both are champion players, match winners on their day. In a broader perspective, they are similar range players. Comparing between generations is always foolish.' added another user 'The whole segment is crazy, ashwin was literally bashing him and he looked clueless.' yet another user stated.

Stephen Curry Names $197,230,450 Memphis Grizzlies Star the Most Athletic Player in the NBA—Over His Own Teammate

Ja Morant and Stephen Curry (Image via Sky Sports) Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry made headlines this week with a surprising yet telling revelation about who he believes holds the title of the most athletic player in the NBA. While attending the American Century Championship golf tournament, Curry was asked for his pick, and instead of choosing his own explosively talented teammate Jonathan Kuminga, he singled out Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant . Why Stephen Curry Picked Ja Morant Stephen Curry 's response immediately stirred discussion across the league—and for good reason. Ja Morant, 25, has earned a reputation as one of the most electrifying athletes in the game. His speed, vertical leap, and in-air acrobatics have left both fans and opponents in awe. Curry praised Morant for his 'pound-for-pound' athleticism, referencing his elite body control, leaping ability, and relentless style of play. Morant has produced several jaw-dropping moments throughout his young career, none more talked about than his near-posterizing dunk attempt over 7'4' Victor Wembanyama last season—an attempt that, even though it didn't count, was widely considered one of the most spectacular of the year. Comparing Ja Morant to NBA's Athletic Greats In explaining his choice, Curry placed Ja Morant in the same athletic class as prime Russell Westbrook and John Wall—two guards known for their explosive first steps and rim-rattling finishes. Both Westbrook and Wall changed the game with their speed and verticality, and Curry sees that same rare combination in Morant. The acknowledgment is significant coming from a player like Curry, whose game is more about finesse, range, and intelligence than physical domination. It also underscores the diversity of elite NBA talent—where greatness takes many forms, not just sheer athleticism. What About Jonathan Kuminga? Curry's choice not to mention Jonathan Kuminga , a young Warriors forward celebrated for his own elite athletic traits, added another layer to the conversation. Kuminga has shown flashes of brilliance with powerful dunks and highlight-reel plays, and many within the Warriors organization consider him one of the most physically gifted players on the roster. Still, Curry's focus on Morant suggests that he sees something uniquely special in the Memphis guard's physical toolkit. A Nod to Ja Morant's Rising Status Despite injuries and off-court setbacks, Morant's career numbers—22 points, 7 assists, 4.7 rebounds, and 1 steal per game—speak to his overall impact. But as Curry emphasized, it's Morant's raw, dynamic athleticism that truly sets him apart. His ability to dominate games through sheer physicality and grace makes him a matchup nightmare and a consistent highlight machine. Curry's Comments Reflect the Changing NBA Curry's praise also adds to the ongoing narrative of how the NBA continues to evolve. While he has revolutionized the game with his shooting and movement, Curry clearly appreciates the physical artistry that players like Morant bring to the court. His comments act as a bridge between two distinct basketball archetypes: the precision shooter and the high-flying athlete. As the NBA gears up for another thrilling season, all eyes will be on Ja Morant to see if he can elevate his Grizzlies further into contention. For Curry and the Warriors, Ja Morant's rise represents the new generation of elite talent they must contend with. And for fans, the blend of styles—from Morant's explosive athleticism to Curry's surgical shooting—ensures the league remains as entertaining and unpredictable as ever. "He Is A Batter Who England Fear": Sanjay Manjrekar's Massive Praise For India Star

Former India player Sanjay Manjrekar has heaped praises on wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant. While discussing about the way the southpaw bats, Manjrekar said that Pant should be left free to play the way he wants to as he deserves it. In a massive praise for the left-handed batter, Manjrekar said that the England cricket team fears him. Pant kicked off the ongoing five-match Test series vs England in a great fashion. He smashed centuries across both the innings in the first game in Leeds. The batter also hit a fifty each in the following two Tests in England. "Rishabh Pant will play in his way no matter what the situation is. He should get that license because he deserves it. The batting unit has to function well. Jaiswal must think a bit about how he got out. He should make use of his form. Pant, I feel, is a big player at No.5. He is a batter who England fear," Manjrekar said on Star Sports. Pant is expected to play in the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford starting from July 23, according to Sky Sports. In the 34th over, bowled by Jasprit Bumrah on Day 1 of the third Test, Pant made a dive to pick up the ball, but could not get it cleanly in his hands, making England pick two runs off byes. Following that, he was seen in a lot of pain and had to leave the field for medical attention. Young Dhruv Jurel took the field as he replaced Pant as the wicketkeeper of the team in the second session of the first day of the Test match. Despite the finger injury Pant batted in both the innings, he made a brilliant 74 (112). During the knock, Pant smoked the ball into the stands for two towering maximums to break Viv Richards' milestone for most sixes against England in the format. Although he was cleaned up by a beauty from Jofra Archer in the second innings for 9 off 12 balls. He was fit enough to bat but was unable to keep wickets.
