FOX MLB Crew Predicts Bold Trade Deadline Will Decide World Series Teams

Fox Sports16-07-2025
The first half of MLB's 2025 season is over, and the All-Star Game is behind us, as well. What better time to start looking at just which teams might be in this year's World Series than now?
FOX's Kevin Burkhardt posed the question of World Series favorites to fellow analysts and former MLB players Derek Jeter, David Ortiz and Alex Rodriguez at the conclusion of the 2025 MLB All-Star Game, and there was a theme worth exploring: the trade deadline.
All three of Jeter, Ortiz and Rodriguez emphasized the importance of the trade deadline in ensuring that their predictions come to pass. Jeter even prefaced his pick with a callback to last year. "Last year I picked the Baltimore Orioles to go to the World Series," Jeter told Burkhardt. The reason why I picked them is I was looking forward to the trade deadline, Baltimore had a stacked minor-league system, I thought they were going to make a move, they didn't do it, they didn't win."
This year, he used the same strategy, but for the Yankees. And Jeter isn't expecting a repeat of last year's Baltimore inactivity, either. "So this year I am going with the New York Yankees. Yankees are going to beat the Cubs in the World Series. I'm going with the Yankees because [Brian] Cashman basically said that he's all-in. So I expect the Yankees to do something at the trade deadline."
As for Ortiz, he once again went with the Red Sox as his pick for the World Series champion, citing their recent success – the Red Sox entered the All-Star break riding a 10-game win streak – as well as expected trade deadline activity as the reasons. "Can't get no better than that, you go into the trade deadline, we pick some stuff, get the team better, and all of a sudden, winner in Boston."
Rodriguez had less confidence in a specific pick than either of Jeter or Ortiz, citing the "wide open" field of potential World Series candidates. "We've been doing this now for 10 years, and this is the one year, fellas, that's wide open. I have no idea who's going to go to the World Series, and that's a good thing." Rodriguez continued on, however, citing the potential of the trade deadline as a separator, just as Jeter and Ortiz had.
"There's going to be a competition of the best front office that does the most bold moves in the trade deadline, and I'm going to go with the most resources: Yankees and Dodgers," said Rodriguez. "All the eyes will be on Brian Cashman, to make the moves to finally get over the L.A. Dodgers in October."
Two picks for the Yankees – one over the Cubs, one over the Dodgers – and one for the Red Sox against whichever team they come up against. All of these selections, however, rely on these clubs doing what the Orioles didn't do either for themselves or for Jeter a year ago: getting even better than they already are at the July 31 trade deadline.
The Yankees, as of the break, are in second place in the AL East, two games back of the Blue Jays, while the Red Sox are in third, three games back. Both have wild cards in their possession, though, and there's a lot of season left that includes a trade deadline in it, too.

Arizona Diamondbacks at Detroit Tigers odds, picks and predictions

The Arizona Diamondbacks (51-55) and Detroit Tigers (61-46) begin a 3-game series Monday. First pitch from Comerica Park in Detroit is set for 6:40 p.m. Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's MLB odds around the Diamondbacks vs. Tigers odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets. Season series: First meeting; Tigers won 2 of 3 last season The Diamondbacks opened their 9-game road trip with a rough series loss in Pittsburgh, managing just 1 run total across the 3-game set against the Pirates. They won the opener 1-0, but were shut out 2-0 Saturday and 6-0 Sunday. Arizona lost the finale as +134 underdogs as the Under (7.5) cashed. The Tigers ended their 6-game skid Sunday with a 10-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays as -113 home favorites as the Over (8.5) cashed. Starter Jack Flaherty delivered 6 shutout innings with 7 strikeouts and 2B Gleyber Torres powered the offense, going 2-for-4 with a home run and 4 RBIs. Diamondbacks at Tigers projected starters LHP Eduardo Rodriguez vs. RHP Troy Melton Rodriguez (3-6, 5.50 ERA) is making his 18th start. He has a 1.65 WHIP, 3.3 BB/9 and 9.7 K/9 through 86 2/3 innings. Melton (0-1, 10.80 ERA) is making his second career start. Diamondbacks at Tigers picks and predictions Diamondbacks 7, Tigers 5 Moneyline BET DIAMONDBACKS (+110). The Diamondbacks are in a favorable spot to take Monday's series opener in Detroit. Arizona sends Rodriguez to the mound, who's been solid on the road, allowing just 5 earned runs over his last 3 road starts (14 2/3 IP). He's coming off a strong outing, holding Houston scoreless through 6 1/3 innings. On the other side, Detroit rookie Melton makes his second career start—and first at Comerica Park—after giving up 6 earned runs in 5 innings in his debut. That home crowd pressure won't make things easier. The Tigers have dropped 7 of their last 10 games at home and enter the week struggling at the plate, hitting an MLB-worst .197 over the last 15 days. While Detroit looked better on Sunday, it's tough to trust this offense to stay hot. At plus odds, the value lies with Arizona to grab the series opener on the road. Run line/Against the spread PASS. I'm going to keep my wager to the run line. Over/Under BET OVER 9 (+100). The Over has hit in 7 of the last 8 games between the Tigers and Diamondbacks, and recent trends support more scoring Monday. The Over is 3-2-1 in Detroit's last 6 games and has cashed in 4 of Rodriguez's last 6 starts. Expect another high-scoring affair in this series opener. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Mauricio and Soto lead Mets past Giants 5-3 for 7th straight win

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Ronny Mauricio and Juan Soto homered in the seventh inning, and the New York Mets beat the San Francisco Giants 5-3 on Sunday to match a season best with their seventh straight win. Mauricio had a career-high four hits, going 4 for 4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a tying homer from the bottom spot in the batting order. Jeff McNeil also doubled twice to help the Mets complete a three-game sweep and extend their NL East lead to 1 1/2 games over Philadelphia. Matt Chapman hit two homers and drove in all three runs for the Giants, who loaded the bases in the ninth on two walks and a hit batter. Edwin Díaz struck out Willy Adames and Chapman to end it. The Mets, who also had a seven-game winning streak in April, trailed 3-2 following Chapman's second homer, a two-run drive off starter Kodai Senga in the fifth. Mauricio tied it when the rookie drove a 1-0 slider from All-Star reliever Randy Rodríguez (3-2) into McCovey Cove leading off the seventh. After Brandon Nimmo and Francisco Lindor struck out, Soto hit his team-leading 25th home run to left, giving the Mets a 4-3 lead. They added an insurance run in the ninth on consecutive doubles by Mauricio and Nimmo. José Buttó (3-1), the first of five Mets relievers, retired three batters for the win. Gregory Soto pitched a perfect seventh in his New York debut, and Díaz worked the ninth for his 23rd save. Senga walked five in five innings. He allowed three runs and four hits. Key moment Mauricio shut down a potential Giants rally when he fielded Adames' slow grounder in front of third base and then quickly reversed direction to tag out Heliot Ramos trying to advance from second. Key stat Rodríguez had allowed only one home run all season before the Mets got to him twice in one inning. Up next Mets RHP Frankie Montas (3-1, 4.62 ERA) faces the Padres in San Diego on Monday. Carson Whisenhunt, the Giants' top pitching prospect, will make his major league debut Monday against Pittsburgh. ___ This story has been corrected to show Buttó was the first of five Mets relievers. ___ AP MLB: Michael Wagaman, The Associated Press

Giants top pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt set for MLB debut vs. Pirates

Giants top pitching prospect Carson Whisenhunt set for MLB debut vs. Pirates originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area SAN FRANCISCO — When Carson Whisenhunt, Carson Seymour and Carson Ragsdale were all in the same Triple-A rotation, they invented a little game. The three often would walk around the ballpark together, and if a fan yelled out 'Carson' the first one to turn around would have to go and sign autographs. 'Usually it's Whis,' Seymour explained. 'They want his signature.' Whisenhunt, the organization's top pitching prospect, will now be hearing those fans at Oracle Park. Manager Bob Melvin announced Sunday that Whisenhunt will start Monday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. It'll be the MLB debut for the 2022 second-round pick, and it'll come in place of Landen Roupp, who went on the IL on Friday. 'We've been waiting for this for a little bit now,' Melvin said. 'We thought maybe he would be here last year, too. He's our top pitching prospect, I believe. With what's gone on here with the injury and (Hayden Birdsong) going down (to Triple-A), there's a need for it. It'll be exciting to see him pitch.' Whisenhunt, 23, has a 4.42 ERA in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. His strikeout rate is down, but he has done a better job of staying in the strike zone and has limited homers. He'll attack the Pirates on Monday with a changeup that is one of the best in the minor leagues and has long been ready for big league hitters. 'It's a legit changeup, for sure,' Seymour said. 'The fastball is good. The sequencing is great.' Seymour was the first of the three Carsons to reach the big leagues, and he hoped to face the New York Mets this weekend since they traded him away a few years ago. Instead, he is likely to back up Whisenhunt on Monday, and he said he's eager to get that shot. Whisenhunt threw seven innings in four consecutive starts earlier this season, but he has not completed six innings in about six weeks. He threw 3 2/3 innings last Sunday, allowing only one run and striking out four. The Giants used seven relievers on Sunday, but they currently are carrying 10. To add Whisenhunt, who will wear No. 88, they'll need to make moves to the active and 40-man rosters, but they should still have plenty of depth behind their young lefty on Monday. They're currently carrying four pitchers who can qualify as long relief types. 'It just depends on how efficient he is,' Melvin said of Whisenhunt. 'We'd like him to be able to get maybe a little bit deeper into the game than he (did) last time. We do still have some length arms down there to be able to help out, but it just depends on how efficient he is.' Download and follow the Giants Talk Podcast
