From the Mughals' successors to dancing skills, ruling Shiv Sena and NCP lock horns

Indian Express2 days ago

The rivalry between the ruling coalition allies in Maharashtra, the Nationalist Congress Party led by Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena, seems to be intensifying in the Raigad district after Sena MLAs openly warned NCP state president Sunil Tatkare Sunday that his reverse countdown has begun.
A day after, the NCP Monday likened them to the successors of the Mughals in Kaliyuga.
Referring to Lok Sabha MP Tatkare's mimicry of Sena minister Bharat Gogawale from Raigad's Mahad Assembly seat, who always carries a handkerchief in his hand, Sena's Karjat MLA Mahendra Thorave said, 'The day you mimicked Bharat Gogawale, your reverse countdown had begun. Just wait and watch how we force you to take the handkerchief on your head'.
Thorave, who was speaking at the birthday celebration of Gogawale, even warned that Tatkare's file on the irrigation scam has not yet been closed.
Alibaug Sena MLA Mahendra Dalvi, too, targeted Tatkare, saying the upcoming Maharashtra civic body polls will be fought as Mahayuti, but Tatkare will not be a part of it. 'He (Tatkare) has a habit of claiming everything for himself. Those who have no sense of ownership should not even think about guardianship (of Raigad district),' Dalvi said.
The Sena and NCP are at loggerheads over the guardian ministership of the Raigad district. While Tatkare's daughter and the state's Women and Child Development Department Minister, Aditi Tatkare. has claimed it, Sena's Gogawale wants the post. Apart from the local political rivalry, this issue is one of the bones of contention between the two parties.
Dalvi further claimed, 'We worked for Tatkare in Lok Sabha polls, but he showed his level in the Assembly elections'.
On Monday, NCP chief spokesperson Anand Paranjpe hit back with a jibe, especially at Thorave
'There is no doubt that Sunil Tatkare will retain his Raigad Lok Sabha constituency, which has the blessing of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, even in 2029. But let me assure these successors of the Mughals in Kaliyuga that they will soon have to hide their faces with a handkerchief, and avoid the people of Maharashtra,' Paranjpe.
'The Sena minister and two MLAs always act aggressively like the Mughals. Before attacking Tatkare, an MLA like Thorave should realise that the entire world has seen his dance bar skills when he was dancing at the top of the table after his trip to Guwahati,' Paranjape added.

Maharashtra Politics: Are Decks Clear For NCP-NCPSP Merger? Chatter Grows About NDA Crossing 300-Mark

Is Maharashtra's political landscape set to witness another twist? There are indications but no concrete answers as of now but the talks of Ajit Pawar-led NCP's merger with Sharad Pawar-led NCP-SP has once against ignited political debates. Ajit Pawar recently shared dias with Sharad Pawar in Pune and those aware of the matter said that the two leaders held separate talks about the reunion. Meanwhile, NCP-SP leader Rohit Pawar also dropped a big hint about the possible reunification of the two warring factions. Speaking to reporters, Rohit Pawar said that senior Pawar has entrusted Supriya Sule with the task and she will take the final call after discussing it with party leaders. He said that while Sharad Pawar has been hinting at a possible alliance with Ajit Pawar, there may be some twist with respect to the BJP. Rohit Pawar said that Sharad Pawar is known for making decisions which are mostly unexpected and totally out of the blue. "What unfolds in the coming days will depend on him, but he will always take a decision in favour of the people," Rohit said. While NCP leaders like Rohit and Anil Deshmukh have maintained that no official talks have been held so far between the two parties, the clamour around the merger has already forced leaders to vie for key party posts. Notably, if the merger happens, Praful Patel and Supriya Sule will be among the top contenders for the Modi cabinet. The chatters have also grown on social media with people claiming that the NCP-NCPSP merger could take place in June itself and thus, the BJP-led NDA's number in the Lok Sabha may go beyond the 300 mark. Notably, the NDA has 293 seats in the Lok Sabha and if the NCPSP joins the alliance, then its tally will go to 301 with the eight seats of Shara Pawar's party. NCP-SP's merger or joining of the NDA will deal a big jolt to the Maha Vikas Aghadi in Maharashtra where the Congress and Shiv Sena-UBT are largely dependent on the NCP-SP in regions like Western Maharashtra and Marathawada.

Census 2027 to start from October next yr; to be conducted in two phases

The Centre on Wednesday said that Census-2027 with caste enumeration would be undertaken in two phases across the country, from October 1, 2026 in snow-bound and hilly areas like Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and from March 1, 2027 in the rest of the country. The reference date of people's headcount would be March 1, 2027, midnight for the entire country. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) statement on conducting Census 2027, which will also be the first digital Census, has come a little over a month after the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs (CCPA), on April 30, approved caste enumeration in the forthcoming population census. Caste data was enumerated the last time as part of the 1931 Census, and was collected as part of the Socio-Economic Caste Census in 2011 but the data was not released because of infirmities. The last Census was held 16 years ago in 2011. The 2021 Census was initially delayed because of the outbreak of Covid-19. In 2023, the UN Population Fund had said India was likely to have almost three million more people than China by the middle of that year. The Census will also have a bearing on the delimitation of the Lok Sabha seats and one-third reservation for women in directly elected legislatures. However, it is not clear whether the Census data will be available by the time the next Lok Sabha polls are announced. The provisional data for the 2011 Census was released on March 31, 2011, 25 days after its population enumeration phase ended, while the final data was released two years later on April 30, 2013. Some of the southern states have demanded a freeze on the number of Lok Sabha seats, based on the 1971 Census, for another 25 years. The notification for the intent of conducting the population Census with these reference dates would be published in the official gazette "tentatively' on June 16, 2025 as per provision of Section 3 of Census Act 1948, it said. Officials said the second and final phase of the census would begin in February 2027 and conclude on March 1, 2027 (reference date). On December 24, 2019, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had approved conducting Census 2021 at a cost of ₹8,754.23 crore and updating of the National Population Register (NPR) at a cost of ₹3,941.35 crore. It was, however, unclear whether Census 2027 would include updating of the NPR. The entire 2021 Census exercise was estimated to cost the government over ₹13,000 crore. The Budget for 2025-26 allocated ₹574.80 crore for Census surveys and statistics/the Registrar General of India (RGI). In a post on X, Congress General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh said, "There is really no reason to delay the Census that was due in 2021, for another 23 months. The Modi Government is capable only of generating headlines, not meeting deadlines." According to the government statement on December 24, 2019, the 2021 Census was to comprise 'House listing and Housing Census from April to September, 2020, and Population Enumeration from February 9 to February 28, 2021'. It said that the NPR would also be updated along with House listing and Housing Census except in Assam. As many as 3 million field functionaries were to conduct the exercise, up from 2.8 million in 2011. It had envisaged use of a mobile app for data collection and the central portal for monitoring purpose, and to ensure early release of Census data with improved quality. It had said that 2.4 crore man-days employment would be generated during the collection of the data. The Census process involves visiting each and every household and canvassing separate questionnaire for House listing and Housing Census & Population Enumeration. The enumerators are generally government teachers and appointed by the state governments. A government functionary said the budget was a minor issue and could be sorted out. According to Article 246 of the Constitution, Census was a subject listed at 69 in the Union List in the Seventh Schedule. While some states had conducted surveys to enumerate castes, these surveys had varied in transparency and intent, with some conducted purely from a "political angle, creating doubts in society", the government had said on April 30. The Census Act, 1948 and the Census Rules, 1990 provide the legal framework for conduct of Census.

Nandyal MP Byreddy Shabari highlights India's progress on climate goal front at BRICS Parliamentary Forum in Brazil

Nandyal MP Byreddy Shabari asserted that India had been actively protecting the environment even before global discussions on climate change began, citing the Chipko Movement of the 1970s, in which rural women played a key role in saving forests, as an example, at a session on 'Empowering Women to Face the Climate Crisis', organised as part of the BRICS Parliamentary Forum held in Brazil on Wednesday. On the occasion, Ms. Shabari highlighted India's progress on the climate goal front, which included a 24% reduction in emission intensity and an addition of 159 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity, and mentioned that the country had the largest number of Ramsar sites in entire South Asia. She also spoke about the need for gender-inclusive climate policies, and the important role women could play in environment protection. Ms. Shabari said it was enriching to engage and exchange ideas with fellow Parliamentarians from around the world, especially from the BRICS group of nations, and these interactions reinforced the importance of dialogue, solidarity, and shared commitment to progress and equality, while thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu for giving her the opportunity to be part of the Indian delegation led by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
