Morocco to Launch New Automated Radar System to Catch Speeding in Both Directions
Rabat – Morocco will roll out a new automated radar system that can detect speeding violations in both traffic directions.
The National Road Safety Agency (NARSA) announced the move on Tuesday, saying the new road safety measure will begin on June 16.
The initiative aims to improve road safety and ensure fair enforcement of traffic laws across the country.
NARSA said in a statement that the system is part of its continued efforts to improve road safety across the country. The radars will now be able to record speed violations from vehicles that are approaching and those that are moving away from the radar, it further explained.
All drivers, no matter the direction they are going, will be equally monitored and held responsible if they exceed the speed limit, said NARSA.
The agency noted the importance of respecting speed limits and traffic laws. It reminded all drivers that these rules exist to protect everyone on the road.
The new radar system means several important changes for drivers in Morocco. First, monitoring is set to be more accurate, as the radars can detect speeding vehicles in both directions, not just those approaching the device.
This would put an end to the common assumption that drivers are only caught when heading toward a radar.
In addition, the system will ensure fairer enforcement of traffic laws by treating all road users equally. This reduces the chances of some speeding drivers escaping penalties.
Most importantly, the initiative is expected to improve overall road safety by encouraging drivers to slow down and respect speed limits at all times, NARSA says. It is part of a wider effort by Moroccan authorities to reduce traffic accidents and save lives through stronger enforcement and public awareness.

Moroccan NGO urges Spain to reinstate driver's license recognition
The Association of Moroccan Immigrant Workers in Spain (ATIM) has recently called for the mutual recognition of driver's licenses between Spain and Morocco to be reactivated, based on an agreement that has been in place since 2004. The organization said the issue is currently being discussed by the Spanish and Moroccan ministries. «We hope that after the summer, a clear solution will be found to restart the license exchange or create a new cooperation framework», ATIM said. They want the mutual recognition to start again immediately, without any new tests or exams. They also ask for an official order from Spain's traffic authority (DGT) and for unfair fines against Moroccan drivers acting in good faith to be canceled. ATIM pointed out that, according to media reports, the DGT still treats Moroccan residents in Spain as if they don't have valid licenses, often fining them 500 euros. At the same time, Moroccan tourists are allowed to drive using their licenses from Morocco. Because of this, ATIM criticized what they call a «contradictory policy» that hurts thousands of families, especially farm workers and people who depend on driving for their jobs. They say this is unfair discrimination against Moroccans who have been asking for a solution for years. «While the two countries work on a solution, it's wrong to keep punishing families who are already suffering», the NGO added.
