China slams Germany for 'hyping' regional tensions in Asia

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning at the regular press briefing in Beijing on Monday, August 18, 2025. -- Image via the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. BEIJING (AFP): China lashed out at Germany on Monday (Aug 18), warning Berlin against "inciting confrontation and hyping up tensions" after its foreign minister said Beijing was "increasingly aggressive" in the Asia-Pacific region. During a visit to Japan, Johann Wadephul said China had made repeated threats to "unilaterally change the status quo and shift borders in its favour", citing its behaviour in the Taiwan Strait and the East and South China Seas. "Any escalation in this sensitive hub of international trade would have serious consequences for global security and the world economy," Wadephul said Monday after talks with Japanese counterpart Takeshi Iwaya. A statement issued on Sunday before Wadephul's visit to Japan -- and later Indonesia -- said that China was "increasingly asserting its regional supremacy and, in doing so, is also questioning principles of international law." "China's increasingly aggressive behaviour in the Taiwan Strait and the East and South China Seas also has implications for us in Europe: fundamental principles of our global coexistence are at stake here," the statement quoted Wadephul as saying. China's foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning hit back on Monday, telling a regular news conference that the situation in the East China Sea and the South China Sea "remains generally stable". "We urge the relevant parties to respect regional countries, resolve issues through dialogue and consultation, and safeguard the common interest of peace and stability, instead of inciting confrontation and hyping up tensions," she said when asked about Wadephul's comments. "The Taiwan question is China's internal affair," she added. - 'War machine' support - In the joint press statement in Tokyo, Wadephul also criticised "China's support for the Russian war machine" in Ukraine. "Without it, the war of aggression against Ukraine would not be possible. China is Russia's largest supplier of dual-use goods and Russia's best oil and gas customer," Wadephul said. He also said ahead of talks later Monday between US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders that security guarantees for Kyiv were "crucial". Trump's summit on Friday with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Alaska "made it clear that for a just and lasting peace, Moscow must finally act. Until that happens, pressure on Russia must be increased, including with increased aid to Ukraine," Wadephul said. The talks on Monday in Washington are about establishing "the elements of a negotiated solution on the path to a just peace for Ukraine," he said. "Firm security guarantees are crucial for this. Because Ukraine must be able to defend itself effectively even after a ceasefire and peace agreement." -- AFP

Thailand to allow foreign tourists to convert crypto to baht

Image from The Nation Thailand/Asia News Network BANGKOK (Bloomberg): Tourism-reliant Thailand will relax restrictions on foreign visitors converting digital-asset holdings into the baht to fund their travel expenses and spending while in the country. The government wants to promote innovation and support the use of digital assets to stimulate Thailand's tourism industry while offering convenient payment options for foreigners, Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira told a press briefing on Monday. The so-called TouristDigipay program will start its 18-month trial period through a regulatory sandbox in the fourth quarter, he added. Digital assets cannot be used directly as a means of payment for goods and services - only for conversions into the baht - and merchants will receive payments only in baht, according to officials. "We want to take every action to facilitate foreign tourists for their stays in Thailand,' said Pichai. "This new program adds a new innovation to replace overseas visitors' cash and credit card use here.' Southeast Asia's third-biggest economy is trying to lure international tourists from a wider range of countries, with visitors from China slumping amid safety concerns. The government hopes to boost the flow of tourists from the Middle East and South-East Asia to help offset a 33% drop in Chinese travelers in the first half of the year, following news of Chinese actor Wang Xing's kidnapping near Thailand's border with Myanmar. On Monday, Thailand's main planning agency lowered its foreign tourist arrival forecast to 33 million this year from 37 million earlier, citing a slump in the number of Chinese visitors. The tourism industry makes up about 12% of Thailand's gross domestic product. Year-to-date tourist arrivals have topped 20.2 million as of Aug. 10, down 6.9% from the same period a year ago. Foreign tourists who wish to convert digital assets into the baht to pay for goods and services must transact through licensed digital-asset business operators and e-money service providers, according to a Finance Ministry statement. Spending through the program is limited to 500,000 baht per month. Those limits, alongside strict requirements around opening new accounts and activating e-wallets, are designed to prevent money laundering, according to Pichai. -- ©2025 Bloomberg L.P.

TVET Commission to streamline vocational education in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: The government believes the new Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Commission will create a more structured and industry-aligned education system. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the commission will eliminate overlaps and improve resource efficiency across ministries and institutions. He referenced Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's 13th Malaysia Plan speech, which emphasised strengthening the National TVET Policy 2030. 'The TVET Commission will regulate institutions, monitor strategy implementation, and ensure inter-ministerial coordination,' he said during the Dewan Rakyat session. Responding to Lee Chuan How (PH-Ipoh Timor), Ahmad Zahid acknowledged the need for better outreach to Chinese youth regarding TVET opportunities. He commended Lee, a TVET graduate, for actively promoting vocational education among students. 'His efforts have successfully encouraged Chinese students to join TVET programmes,' Ahmad Zahid added. On Felda land inheritance issues, he noted that the government started reviewing the Land Act (Group Settlement Areas) 1960 in September 2022. Five key priorities were identified, including governance improvements and protecting land ownership rights. The Felda Regulatory Division is committed to resolving housing concerns for second and third-generation settlers. Ahmad Zahid will visit Felda Jengka on Sept 6 to address these matters further. - Bernama
