Madhya Pradesh CM slams Rahul's ‘surrender' remarks, seeks apology

The Hindu2 days ago

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Wednesday (June 4, 2025) hit out at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his remarks in Bhopal, in which the latter alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had 'immediately surrendered' in the recent India-Pakistan conflict following a phone call from U.S. President Donald Trump.
Mr. Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, had made the remarks while addressing a gathering of Congress functionaries and leaders during his visit to the State capital on Tuesday (June 3, 2025).
'I know the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) and RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) people well now. You put a little pressure on them, they get scared and run away. For example, Trump gave a sign from there (the U.S.). [He] picked up the phone and said 'Narender, surrender', and Narendra Modi-ji obeyed Trump's directions,' Mr. Gandhi had said, in a reference to the perceived role of the U.S. in the ceasefire announced between India and Pakistan on May 10.
Slamming the Congress leader and seeking an apology from him, Mr. Yadav said that the remarks and 'his (Mr. Gandhi's) attitude' showed that he had 'not yet matured'.
'It is unfortunate, the way the Leader of Opposition speaks, leaving decorum behind. It not only tarnishes his reputation but also goes against the culture of our country... The words he has spoken about the Prime Minister show his frivolity,' Mr. Yadav said.
'MPs of his own party are talking about this (Operation Sindoor) but he is talking senselessly. The post of LoP is a graceful one. We don't tolerate such words in our State. He should apologise,' Mr. Yadav said.
The BJP leader said the Congress would 'pay the price' for Mr. Gandhi's statement. 'Only Congress knows where he will take the party, behaving like this,' he added.
Mr. Gandhi had made further remarks on the subject of surrender. 'This is their character. Since the time of Independence, they are used to writing the letter for surrender. They cave in after even a little amount of pressure. The Congress does not surrender. [Mahatma] Gandhi-ji, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, they are the people who don't surrender. They fight the superpowers,' the Congress leader said.
Recalling the 1971 Indo-Pak war, Mr. Gandhi had claimed that then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had not given in to pressure from the U.S.
'You must remember the time when the 7th fleet [of the U.S. Navy] with an aircraft carrier had come instead of a phone call. Indira Gandhi-ji said 'I will do what I have to'. This is the difference,' he said, adding that India had split Pakistan into two despite American pressure at the time.
Mr. Gandhi was in Bhopal to launch the 'Sangathan Srajan Abhiyan' (organisation rejuvenation campaign)' aimed at reorganising the party in Madhya Pradesh, where it has been out of power since 2003, barring a 15-month period between 2018 and 2020.
During his visit, Mr. Gandhi had also held four separate meetings with party leaders, office-bearers, and workers.

'Census delay no accident, delimitation not a coincidence', says Stalin

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president MK Stalin on Friday accused the BJP-led central government of deliberately delaying the national Census and orchestrating the delimitation process with a hidden agenda. Calling the Census delay 'no accident' and the delimitation exercise 'no coincidence,' he said, 'The danger I warned of is at our doorstep.' In a post on social media, he alleged: 'There is a sinister design in how the BJP-led Union Government is implementing the national Census and the subsequent delimitation. Developed states, especially in the non-Hindi speaking South, which followed population control norms, will now be punished.' He argued that states which disregarded population control for years would be rewarded with additional seats in Parliament. This, he said, distorts the federal structure and unfairly benefits neglect over progress. Stalin noted that he had already 'warned about this design' and cited senior Congress leader P Chidambaram's detailed explanation of 'how this sleight of hand is unfolding.' He said it was time to remain vigilant and prepare strategies to defend the South's representation. 'The 2027 Census will form the basis for the next delimitation, replacing the 1971 data. This gives the Union BJP government the means to restructure parliamentary representation to its advantage, at the cost of the southern states,' he alleged. While the Ministry of Home Affairs has stated that the concerns of affected states will be considered, Stalin described such assurances as vague. He insisted that the situation calls for a clear commitment in Parliament and the introduction of a Constitutional amendment. He added: 'Just look at what happened after Article 370 was abrogated. The Union government spoke of restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. Elections were held. Assurances were given in the Supreme Court. Yet, Jammu and Kashmir remains a Union Territory. This is the track record of BJP we are dealing with.' Stalin warned that if delimitation is carried out using the 2027 Census, the democratic influence of the southern states would be severely diminished. He also criticised the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), saying, 'Betrayers like the AIADMK choose to kneel before the BJP for their political survival,' but that the people of Tamil Nadu, under the DMK's leadership, would not allow the state to suffer for its developmental success.

JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon 'looks at God' on his retirement, and says, I may …

JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon told Fox Business on Monday that his retirement from America's largest bank is still "several years away," leaving the final decision to divine providence and the board of directors. The 69-year-old banking titan, who has led JPMorgan for nearly two decades, indicated he might remain as executive chairman after stepping down from the CEO role. "It's up to God and the board," Dimon said in the taped interview. "There will be an appropriate time, and then I may stick around for a couple of years as chairman or executive chairman. I love what I do." Succession planning takes center stage The question of Dimon's successor has intensified following his 2024 announcement that retirement was "less than five years" away. JPMorgan's recent investor day became an unofficial audition for potential replacements, with analysts closely watching key executives including consumer banking chief Marianne Lake and corporate banking co-heads Doug Petno and Troy Rohrbaugh. Dimon previously joked that retirement was always "five years away" regardless of when asked, but has grown more serious about succession planning as the bank's board actively evaluates candidates. Record performance justifies hefty pay package Under Dimon's leadership, JPMorgan achieved record-breaking financial results in 2024, posting $58.5 billion in net income—the highest annual profit in American banking history. The stellar performance earned Dimon a substantial pay increase to $39 million, up 8.3% from the previous year's $36 million compensation. JPMorgan's stock has surged over 130% in the past five years, cementing the bank's position as Wall Street's most valuable financial institution. Despite this success, Dimon emphasized the importance of staying competitive against emerging fintech rivals like Stripe. "I don't sit here being complacent," he noted, advising aspiring leaders to "talk to everybody" and avoid becoming "weaponized by one side." AI Masterclass for Students. India's next goal is to be among world's top defence exporters, says PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday (June 6, 202%) said Operation Sindoor demonstrated the strength of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India), and pledged to make India one of world's top defence exporters. 'Today, the world is recognising India's defence ecosystem,' Mr. Modi said in his speech at Udhampur's Katra. Mr. Modi said India had emerged as a leading defence exporter over the past decade, and 'the next goal is to position India among the world's top defence exporters'. 'The faster India moves towards this objective, the more employment opportunities will be generated nationwide, benefiting millions,' he said. 'Choose products made in India' The Prime Minister said that just as the nation honoured its armed forces on the borders, it must also uphold the pride of 'Made in India' in the market, ensuring that India's strength is reflected in both defence and commerce. He said the recent military success was due to the armed forces' trust in 'Make in India'. 'Every Indian must now emulate their commitment. The Mission Manufacturing initiative, announced in this year's budget, was aimed at accelerating India's manufacturing sector,' he said. He called upon young innovators and entrepreneurs in Jammu and Kashmir to join this mission. 'India needs their modern thinking, innovation, ideas, and skills to elevate national security and economic growth,' he added. Calling upon every Indian to make a commitment to prioritise products made in India, Mr. Modi said that these goods are a true reflection of the hard work and dedication of fellow citizens. 'Choosing Indian-made products is the real service to the nation, strengthening the economy and empowering workers,' he added.
