
Seoul taken over by 'Squid Game'
SEOUL: Seoul was taken over by the world of "Squid Game" on Saturday (June 28) as a fan event brought together the show's creators, fans, and key cast members.
A parade showcasing iconic elements from the series, such as the infamous killer doll Young-hee and actors dressed as players and guards reenacting memorable scenes like the O and X voting, marched along the road from Gwanghwamun to Seoul City Hall, accompanied by bands playing the show's soundtrack.

The parade, which concluded around 9pm, was followed by a fan event featuring cast members from "Squid Game" seasons 1 through 3.

SEOUL: Hybe America and Paramount Pictures have reportedly announced they will co-produce a K-pop-themed feature film, slated for theatrical release in early 2027. According to The Korea Herald, the film will follow a Korean American teenager who auditions for a reality TV competition, hoping to join a K-pop girl group, against her family's wishes. Filming is scheduled to commence in mid-September and will take place entirely in South Korea. This reportedly marks it as the first major Hollywood studio project to be shot exclusively in the country. Yoo Ji-young and Eric Nam have reportedly been cast in the lead roles, with Korean American director Benson Lee at the helm, working from a script by Eileen Shim. Lee expressed his enthusiasm for the project, saying, "This film is my love letter to K-pop — a world filled with energy, passion, magic and an incredible community of support." James Shin of Hybe America, Arthur Spector and Joshua Davis of Epic Magazine, and Hybe board member Scooter Braun will reportedly serve as producers. Bryan Oh, Paramount Pictures' senior vice president, is said to be overseeing the project. It's worth noting that Hybe is the South Korean entertainment company behind popular groups such as BTS, Seventeen, NewJeans, and Enhypen.

The film, which aims for global box office success akin to the recent animated hit K-Pop Demon Hunters, is set to premiere in theatres in early 2027. Though the title is yet to be announced, the film will centre on a Korean American teenager who defies her family's wishes and auditions for a reality TV competition with dreams of becoming part of a K-pop girl group. Yoo Ji-young, who voiced the youngest Huntrix member Joy in K-Pop Demon Hunters and singer Eric Nam, known for his lead role as surgical resident Yona Yoon in the 2023 Hollywood drama Transplant, will take on the lead roles. The production will begin filming in mid-September and will be shot entirely on location in South Korea — marking the first time a major Hollywood studio has conducted a full production solely in Korea.
