A Massive Fault Line Was Supposed to Be ‘Dead'. It Sure Seems Like It's Stirring Again.
The Tintina fault is thought to have been inactive for more than 40 million years, but new research suggests that earthquakes occurred in the zone much more recently.
Researchers from the University of Victoria identified fault scarps that suggest major slips occurred during the Quaternary period (2.6 million years ago to present day).
The team estimated that the fault accumulates.2 to.8 millimeters of strain each year, meaning that a release could cause a 7.5 magnitude earthquake—or on that's even bigger.
Earthquakes occur when two blocks of earth slip past one another at a fault. While earthquakes are perhaps the most tangible reminder that the ground we stand on is always shifting, not all movement at fault planes is sudden. Sometimes blocks slowly creep past each other across centuries. Some faults, like the Tintina fault, are believed to be inactive, meaning that they no longer have earthquakes. The Tintina fault stretches about 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) across the Yukon territory in northwestern Canada, and until recently, scientists believed the zone to have been inactive for over 40 million years.
A new study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, however, tells a different story. The research team—led by experts from the University of Victoria (UVic)—discovered a 130 kilometer (80 mile) stretch with evidence of recent movement. Now, experts believe devastating earthquakes could be on the way.
The team used high-resolution topographic data and LiDAR surveys collected from satellites, airplanes, and drones to identify fault scarps (linear ruptures produced by landscapes) in the area. Researchers found a series of fault scarps passing within 20 kilometers (12 miles) of Dawson City, Canada—evidence that could completely change our understanding of the Tintina fault's movement.
'Over the past couple of decades there have been a few small earthquakes of magnitude 3 to 4 detected along the Tintina fault, but nothing to suggest it is capable of large ruptures,' Theron Finley, lead author of the study, said in a press release. 'The expanding availability of high-resolution data prompted us to re-examine the fault, looking for evidence of prehistoric earthquakes in the landscape.'
Along the fault scarps, the team found 2.6-million-year-old glacial landforms offset by approximately 1000 meters (3280 feet). Researchers also discovered other 132,000-year-old landforms that were only offset by 75 meters (246 feet). Both findings confirm that the fault slipped substantially during earthquakes in the Quaternary period—a geological timeframe spanning from 2.6 million years ago to present day. Interestingly, landforms that emerged 12,000 years ago showed no movement, meaning that there haven't been any large ruptures in the area for over 12 millennia.
Using the data collected, researchers estimate that the fault accumulates about.2 to.8 millimeters of strain every year, which could mean that a devastating earthquake is imminent.
'We determined that future earthquakes on the Tintina fault could exceed magnitude 7.5,' Finley said in the release. 'Based on the data, we think that the fault may be at a relatively late stage of a seismic cycle, having accrued a slip deficit, or build-up of strain, of six metres in the last 12,000 years. If this were to be released, it would cause a significant earthquake.'
Earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.5 or higher are typically noticeable, but cause little damage. Once an earthquake reaches a magnitude of 6.1, however, it can do damage to poorly constructed buildings. As Finley explained, the Tintina fault may exceed magnitude 7.5, meaning that it would be considered a 'major' earthquake on the magnitude scale, and could cause major damage across larger areas.
According to the press release, Canada's National Seismic Hazard Model (NSHM) doesn't currently recognize the Tintina fault as a discrete seismogenic fault source.

The international research project was led by scientists from the Hakai Institute, the University of British Columbia (UBC), and the University of Washington—and conducted in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy, the Tula Foundation, the U.S. Geological Survey's Western Fisheries Research Center, and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. The first author on the study and an evolutionary ecologist at the Hakai Institute and UBC, Melanie Prentice, told Tula: "When we lose billions of sea stars, that really shifts the ecological dynamics.' Prentice went on to describe the impact of losing a sea star. 'In the absence of sunflower stars, sea urchin populations increase, which means the loss of kelp forests, and that has broad implications for all the other marine species and humans that rely on them," she explained. "So losing a sea star goes far beyond the loss of that single species.' Trump moves to shut down NASA missions that measure carbon dioxide and plant health
The Trump administration is moving to shut down two NASA missions that monitor a potent greenhouse gas and plant health, potentially shutting off an important source of data for scientists, policymakers and farmers. President Donald Trump's budget request for fiscal year 2026 includes no money for the Orbiting Carbon Observatories, which can precisely show where carbon dioxide is being emitted and absorbed and how well crops are growing. NASA said in an emailed statement Wednesday that the missions were 'beyond their prime mission' and being terminated 'to align with the President's agenda and budget priorities.' But the missions — a free-flying satellite launched in 2014 and an instrument attached to the International Space Station in 2019 that include technology used in the Hubble Space Telescope — still are more sensitive and accurate than any other systems in the world, operating or planned, and a 'national asset' that should be saved, said David Crisp, a retired NASA scientist who led their development. They helped scientists discover, for example, that the Amazon rain forest emits more carbon dioxide than it absorbs, while boreal forests in Canada, Russia and places where permafrost is melting absorb more than they emit, Crisp said. They also can detect the 'glow' of photosynthesis in plants, which helps monitor drought and predict food shortages that can lead to civil unrest and famine, he said. 'This is really critical,' Crisp said. 'We're learning so much about this rapidly changing planet.' The decision to end the missions is 'extremely shortsighted,' said Jonathan Overpeck, a climate scientist at the University of Michigan. 'The observations provided by these satellites ... 'The principle seems to be that if we stop measuring climate change it will just disappear from the American consciousness,' said University of Pennsylvania climate scientist Michael Mann. Backup plan Crisp and others also are trying to put together a coalition of outside partners — including from Japan and Europe — that could fund and operate the instrument attached to the space station. What's slimy, green and flourishing thanks to climate change?
If you guessed algae, you're right. New research published in Communications Earth & Environment suggests algae growth is increasing in Canada's lakes — even remote ones — and climate change is the main culprit. A team led by researchers at McGill University in Montreal and Université Laval analyzed sediment cores taken from 80 lakes across the country and found that algae has been increasing in the majority of them since the mid-1800s. For lead author Hamid Ghanbari, the most interesting finding was a spike in the rate of the increase in algal growth: since the 1960s, it increased sevenfold. "This was something very surprising for us and when we compared our data with other historical records, we found out that rising temperature is a major factor," Ghanbari said. Aside from climate change, excess nitrogen and phosphorus can also contribute to algal growth when they are carried into waterways through runoff from animal manure and chemical fertilizers, stormwater and wastewater. Algae, along with bacteria and phytoplankton, are essential for the aquatic food web. But too much algae can be a bad thing. The recently published peer-reviewed study looked at algal growth overall and didn't analyze for blooms. While some lakes see some algae as a part of their cycle, Ghanbari said the concern is what will happen if the increase in algae leads to growth outside of what's normal. "That's where the problem starts," he said. "We don't know at the moment what that threshold is, but we know the increasing chlorophyll or algae levels in the lakes could lead to several problems." Ghanbari said excess algae growth can harm aquatic life and even human health — reducing water quality, depleting oxygen in the water and creating blooms that can release dangerous toxins, as residents along the shores of Lake Erie know all too well. Daryl McGoldrick, head of water quality monitoring and surveillance for the Great Lakes for Environment and Climate Change Canada, said while increasing algal growth doesn't necessarily mean more toxic blooms, there is a risk to aquatic life. "The study is in line with what we see and [what we] suspect are impacts of warming," McGoldrick said. Global and local action can help Maëlle Tripon, a project manager with Quebec freshwater advocacy group Fondation Rivières, said her team has noticed first-hand that when it's warmer, they see more algae on lakes. She said her takeaway from the research is that tackling algal growth cannot solely rely on local action. "We already knew we need to change locally — like farming practices and also, for example, we need less paved and waterproof surface in the cities," she said. "But what the study shows is that we also need global policies to alleviate climate change." Ghanbari agreed, but added that individual choices can still help reduce algal growth. "Simple acts such as reducing the fertilizers … or properly disposing of household chemicals, these simple acts could really help the lakes," he said.
