With temperatures reaching such harsh levels, doctors strongly advise staying indoors unless absolutely necessary, using SPF 50+ sunscreen and UV protective sunglasses. Hydration is critical – and just water is not enough
It's June in NCR, and stepping out feels nearly impossible. Work, workouts, and even socialising can wait – the region is currently baking under the harsh sun. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert as temperatures soared to a scorching 48.9°C on Tuesday.
According to IMD, NCR and several parts of northwest India are expected to experience continued extreme heat through the week. Some respite may arrive after June 12, but until then, heatwave precautions are crucial for survival.
Doctors urge minimal exposure
'Ideally, it is not recommended to work outdoors during an extreme heatwave,' says Dr Saifa Latheef, Senior Consultant, Emergency Medicine, Sharda Care Healthcity, Greater Noida, adding, 'The risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke is especially high for the elderly and people with comorbidities.
But if stepping out is unavoidable, ensure you are wellhydrated and take all necessary precautions.'
She advises carrying large bottles of water or oral rehydration solutions (ORS), and wear a hat, cap, and sunglasses before stepping out.
'USE LIGHTWEIGHT MOISTURISERS, SUNSCREENS'
The skin takes a major hit in such weather. Dryness, itchiness, and increased sensitivity are common outcomes of prolonged exposure. 'Skincare during extreme heat requires a focus on protection, hydration, and repair,' says Dr Garima Tyagi, Dermatologist, SENS Clinic.

'Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 50+ and limit direct sun exposure.'
She also clarifies a common myth. 'Sweating doesn't hydrate the skin – it leads to dehydration, as sweat contains water and salt. Lightweight moisturisers help retain moisture without clogging pores,' she says, adding, 'Avoid using harsh cleansers and over-exfoliation, which strip natural oils and damage the skin barrier. Stick to gentle, sulfate-free cleansers, and exfoliate no more than twice a week.'
Tips for working out during a heatwave
Exercise only in the early morning or later in the evening/ night
 Hydrate before, during, and after your workout
 Use electrolyte-rich solutions (e.g., ORS, Electral) not just water  Stick to mild to moderateintensity workouts
 Ensure proper ventilation if working out indoors
 Wear loose, breathable cotton clothing – Inputs by Dr Saifa Latheef
'UV exposure can cause irreversible damage to the eyes'
The sun's UV rays can cause lasting harm not just to the skin, but also to the eyes. 'As far as the eyes are concerned, the eyelids, cornea, lens, and retina can all be irreversibly damaged by prolonged UV exposure,' warns Dr Samir Sud, Senior Eye Expert & Director, Sharp Sight Eye Hospitals, Delhi.
He adds, 'UV rays can increase dryness, lead to ocular surface damage, and even raise the risk of eye cancer. A condition called photokeratitis inflammation of the cornea due to UV exposure can cause red, painful, watery.

Northwest, central India to reel under heatwaves over next two days: IMD

Northwest and central India will continue to reel under heatwaves to severe heatwave conditions during the next two days, and southwest monsoon is expected to advance over remaining parts of central and east India and some parts of the northwest from 12 to 18 June, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD). Heatwave conditions are very likely in many places over Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, East Rajasthan, west Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi from 12-14 June, the IMD said in its latest update. Also, it predicted severe heatwave conditions at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh and East Rajasthan on 12 June and West Rajasthan during 12-14 June. In central India, Madhya Pradesh is likely to witness heat waves from 12-13 June. "No significant change in maximum temperatures likely over Northwest & Central India during next 2-3 days and gradual fall by 2-4°C thereafter," IMD said. It predicted that the southwest monsoon would advance over the remaining parts of central and east India and some parts of northwest India from 12 to 18 June and over most parts of northwest India from 19 to 25 June. According to IMD data, 11 June saw the highest maximum temperature of 48.0°C at Sriganganagar in Rajasthan. In northwestern and central India, the maximum temperatures were in the range of 43-48°C over most places of Rajasthan, Punjab, a few places in Madhya Pradesh and in isolated places in Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and East Uttar Pradesh. They were in the range of 39-43 °C in many places of Bihar, a few places of Gujarat and Vidarbha region, West Uttar Pradesh and at isolated places in Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad and Jharkhand. Also, maximum temperature was markedly above normal (> 5.1°C) at many places over Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, at most places over Arunachal Pradesh, at a few places over Assam, Meghalaya and Himachal Pradesh; and at isolated places in sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, West Uttar Pradesh, west Rajasthan, east Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh and east Madhya Pradesh. In Delhi, temperatures are likely to remain in a similar range between 40°C to 44°C till 14 June. As street vendors see the highest casualties from heatwaves, the IMD, in collaboration with Greenpace India and various informal associations of Delhi, is trying to make weather forecasting more inclusive and accessible. IMD is supporting the effort by co-creating simplified, user-friendly heatwave warnings in Hindi in partnership with community members, ensuring the forecasts are not only understood but are also actionable. IMD's daily weather forecasts and heatwave alerts are being simplified and translated into easy-to-understand local languages. These messages are now being shared through community WhatsApp groups and being prominently displayed at vending carts, labour chowks and waste segregation points through posters and handwritten notices. "The aim is to develop a grassroots early warning system by leveraging the trust and reach of street vendors, gig workers, and daily-wage labourers as frontline communicators of weather alerts, " said an IMD official. Meanwhile, IMD predicted that the monsoon is likely to be in an active phase with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy falls at isolated places over south peninsular India during 12-17 June and over Konkan and Goa during 12-14 June.

A massive military parade is set to bring thousands to Washington DC, to mark the Army's 250th birthday on June 14 -- the same day as President Donald Trump's 79th birthday. The Army has estimated more than 6,000 soldiers will participate in the event. The event, which may cost up to $45 million, is intended to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the US Army and coincides with Trump's 79th birthday. Trump's military parade is expected to include a fitness competition, festival and parade complete with tanks and infantry vehicles, helicopter flyovers and parachute jumps. However, a weather expert told The Irish Times that President Trump's military parade is expected to face weather-related challenges. Trump's birthday parade set for weather hell Accuweather senior meteorologist Thomas Kines predicted a "warm and humid evening," which may feel like the mid-80s. "Looks like a warm and humid evening for the parade with temperatures around 80 degrees, but it will feel like the middle 80s," Kines told The Mirror US. Two more die of diarrhoea in Odisha's Jajpur, toll rises to four

The diarrhoea situation continued to remain grim in the affected and surrounding areas of Vyasanagar municipality, Dharmasala, Danagadi, Rasulpur and Korei blocks with the waterborne disease affecting over 500 people in the last three days. The highest number of cases has been reported from Dharmasala, which reported the first diarrhoea outbreak on Monday night following a community feast. A day later, more diarrhoea cases were reported from several villages in the neighbouring blocks, prompting the Health department to depute two state-level rapid action teams to the affected areas. Although no exact cause of the outbreak has been ascertained, local health officials said, community feasts, consumption of rotten mangoes and jackfruits and water contamination could be the primary reasons. Director of public health Dr Nilakantha Mishra said food and water samples have been collected from the affected areas and sent for tests. 'The test reports are awaited. Efforts are on to provide immediate treatment and control the outbreak,' he told The New Indian Express. Dr Mishra, along with two rapid action teams consisting of medical officers, microbiologists, epidemiologists and the joint director of the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, visited the areas and monitored treatment in coordination with the CDM&PHO. Specialists from Maharaja Jajati Keshari Medical College and Hospital, Jajpur are looking into the treatment of the critical cases, while six medicine specialists from SCB MCH have also been deputed to the district. Separate teams comprising ASHA and anganwadi workers have been engaged to conduct door-to-door surveys and distribute ORS pouches, halogen tablets, medicines and awareness materials in the affected villages. The teams of the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (RWSS) wing have been engaged in disinfection of drinking water sources.
